Basically, this is an AU where you get super nervous before meeting your soulmate, but when they touch you it stops. And you can't stop craving their touch after that.
Nick's stomach churns and he hasn't a clue why. He's not the nervous type, and he's done this kind of thing before. But as he stands in line with Finnick, he feels anxious.
The hair on the back of his neck stands up as he hears the door open. He doesn't avert his eyes from the elephant in front of him, no matter how much his stomach turns. He keeps up the act, just like he always does.
And then she speaks. "Hello. Excuse me?"
The world seems to stop, even though Nick knows that it hasn't. He turns to her and he can't believe his eyes. She's a bunny, for goodness sake.
She puts a paw on his arm as she speaks, and the nervousness fades instantly. His stomach flips as she retracts her paw, but he doesn't let it show that she's affected him in any way.
A bunny. Really, universe? Really?
He knows it. This is it. This is what the universe has dealt him.
But she doesn't stop him when he leaves her on the sidewalk, even after they shake hands. So he thinks, maybe I was wrong after all.
The next time he encounters her, she's angry and his heart flips. He's such a goner. His paws itch to feel her. Nick knows he is not wrong, but this Officer Hopps, she hasn't noticed it yet.
So he does what he always does. He pushes her away and tries to hurt her with his words.
She's relentless. He finds himself letting her in. He finds himself caring about this bunny. Because this is it. This is her.
Each time their fur brushes each other, he can feel it, the warmth. He wonders if she can feel it too.
But then she really does it. She hints that predators are savage. And so he leaves, no matter how much he wants to stay with her.
Because maybe she's right. It would kill him to hurt her. So he's hurt and he gets as far from her as he can.
He had never been nervous until the moment before he met her. And that was how he knew.
She comes to him. And as he holds her in his arms, he feels the warmth envelope him.
A bunny. An emotional bunny had his heart in her paws, and she didn't even have to try.
Predator and prey, against all odds, made for each other.
So when all of this is over, he grabs her paws in his. The warmth spreads through him, from his paws to his tail and back to his heart.
And when their mouths finally, finally, meet, he knows that she can feel it too.
