Distraction
Chapter 7: A June Baby

January 2007
Atlanta was full of energy as she scurried around Denny's room, fussing over his shirts especially, and trying to pack his bag. Denny was sitting on his bed, watching as his wife moved around like a little humming bird.
"You wanna sit down?" Denny asked, knowing what her answer would be.
She paused in her mad rush to pack, turning her head to look at him and she scowled at him. "I wanna be home with my husband, not sit down!"
Denny sighed, knowing that he couldn't exactly change her mind, and Atlanta went back to fussing over his shirts. He watched from his position on his hospital bed, knowing that Doctor Burke had informed them this morning that Denny could go home today if all of his tests were normal. Atlanta had taken it upon herself to ready their belongings to go home. "Did Doctor Montgomery-Shepherd have good news about Imogen?"
Atlanta paused, turning to look over her shoulder at her husband, as she began to chew her lip. "Well, I haven't actually gone to my appointment yet. I wanted to go after you're released from the hospital."
Denny looked concerned but also touched. He sighed, shaking his head fondly at his paranoid wife. "The Doc says I'm fine, baby. I'll be home in no time. I can feel it."
"I never want to see you in another hospital bed," Atlanta added. She abandoned the shirts to step beside her husband, planting a kiss on his forehead. Denny pulled her in for a proper kiss, which earned a giggle. "I love you."
"I love you too, sugarplum."
Within an hour, Doctor Burke and Doctor O'Malley had arrived to release Denny from the hospital. Atlanta nearly started crying when the words had been spoken. "You're free, Denny." Burke smiled at the man.
"Thank God," Denny breathed a sigh of relief. "I can't wait to sleep in my own bed tonight."
"I don't think they'll be much sleeping," Atlanta said off-handedly, before her cheeks turned bright red when she realized what she had said. "Oh my God! You've rubbed off on me!" She playfully (and lightly) swatted at her husband.
Denny playfully responded, "Do you see the abuse I suffer?"
Atlanta rolled her eyes as she stepped forward, planting a kiss on his lips which shut him up. "Denny, let's start our life together."

Once everything was packed, George was leading the tiny family towards the front doors of the hospital. Denny (even though he had tried to fight it) was sitting in a wheelchair, holding onto his wife's hand as George pushed him. Atlanta had tried to hold his bag, but Denny had taken it from her and was resting it on his lap.
Currently, they were talking about colors for the nursery. "You can always do pink. Pink's pretty good for a girl." George offered.
Atlanta snorted, "I had a pink room growing up. I just can't see our daughter in it. Can you imagine Denny holding Imogen and singing songs in a pink room?"
"I take offence to that," Denny chuckled, shaking his head.
She smiled before she let go of his hand. "I'm gonna grab the car. I'll be right back." She stole one last kiss before she existed the hospital to grab their car.
From off to the side, Izzie was standing not too far away, watching the happy couple. She had been hurt when Denny had rejected her before his surgery, but maybe now that the surgery had been a success, he would reconsider. However, as she started to step forward, she heard the voice of her resident.
"Stevens, you aren't doing what I think you're doing."
Izzie turned around, feeling tense as she faced Miranda Bailey. "What do you think I'm doing?"
"I think you're going to try to talk to Denny and I strongly suggest you don't. He's happy with his wife." Doctor Bailey pointed out, looking annoyed with her intern. "And aren't you supposed to be in the pit?"
Izzie looked over longingly at Denny. All she could think about was what if Atlanta had never met Denny. Izzie knew that she had feelings for him, and they were strong. What would her life look like if Denny had been hers? She could imagine getting engaged to him and all the happiness that came along with Denny. Izzie didn't even think of Alex in all this mess, trying to fight for Denny.
"Stevens, get to the pit! Now!" Doctor Bailey broke Izzie out of her thoughts. With one last look, Izzie watched as Atlanta returned to Denny and looked just a bit wet. That could have been my life… Izzie thought as she took off towards the pit, feeling heartbroken as she watched Denny walk out of her life with his wife.

June 1st, 2007
It was a rainy, cold June day when Atlanta arrived back to Seattle Grace Hospital. She was gripping onto her purse as her husband drove her to the hospital. Originally, Atlanta had wanted to have a stay-at-home birth, but Denny had convinced her otherwise. What if the baby had complications because of health issues, like Denny's?
So, she was on her way to the hospital. Denny parked, his eyes wild as he got out of the car and then started calling for help. Atlanta climbed out of the car, just as a contraction hit. They were roughly ten minutes apart and Atlanta knew that Imogen would be born that day.
"Help! Somebody help! My wife is in labor!" Denny shouted as he helped Atlanta by holding her up. A nurse came rushing out with a wheelchair. "Her contractions are ten minutes apart."
Atlanta winced as she closed her eyes, struggling through the pain. The nurse helped her into the chair. "I… I need Addison Shepherd." She breathed, not aware of Addison's divorce.
Denny took hold of her hand as they rushed inside of the hospital. Atlanta looked up when she heard George O'Malley's voice. She saw an older man yelling at Meredith Grey. Denny seemed to ignore the chaos, but Atlanta saw how upset the interns were. "Page Doctor Montgomery." The nurse ordered someone at the station.
Atlanta looked ready to argue about what was going on because there was something going on. However, she looked at Denny and knew that she had to focus on their family. "Hey baby, it's gonna be alright. Little Imogen is gonna be born today, I can feel it." Denny reassured her.
They wheeled her to the room to be looked at.

When Addison entered the room, Atlanta knew that the woman had been through a lot. However, Atlanta was focused on herself. She was the one in labor and a baby was making its way out of her body. "Doctor Shepherd, thank God you're here!" Atlanta looked so thankful.
"Good morning Mrs. Duquette," Addison greeted. "And it's Doctor Montgomery now."
Denny was pacing the room, looking concerned. "Is my wife gonna be okay, doc?"
Addison smiled at Denny. "Are you guys ready to have a baby?"

At one in the afternoon, Atlanta gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Imogen had all ten fingers and toes. Atlanta couldn't believe the relief she felt when she got to finally hold that perfect little being. She looked at her baby with such love and knew that her world was completed.
Denny was curled up beside his wife, sitting on a chair (so as not to hurt Atlanta) and looked on at their daughter. Imogen had curly brown hair and her eyes were a light shade of blue, just as all newborns had.
"She's perfect, baby." Denny breathed out as he reached forward to touch her cheek.
Imogen was gently nursing, her red skin bright against Atlanta's pale skin. "I know." Atlanta replied, looking so at peace. "Welcome to the world, Imogen Danelle Addison Duquette."

Why howdy y'all. I'm alive.
However, as I promised, I finished Distraction! I didn't know how I wanted it to end, but I thought it would be sweet for the family to have their Imogen. Imogen is born during Testing 1-2-3.
