"Will you stand up straight and stop complaining," Rose heard a woman saying from around the corner of the department store in which she worked. She was folding shirts and she heard the woman again, "You are too skinny for words, are you eating enough?" Rose laughed to herself, listening to the woman and decided to see if she needed help. Figuring the woman was arguing with a child Rose shocked to see a boy, David, from her school. She never talked to him before, but that never stopped her from looking. She loved his brown, messy, hair. He was energetic, smart, and kind of goofy but in an adorable way.
As she approached the two she saw David looking annoyed with his older sister Donna, a feisty redhead, who was making him try on several different suit jackets. "I like the blue, how about you?" She asked David who was growing impatient. "Yeah, I suppose its fine. You know I have a perfectly good suit at home." He complained.
"Well, this is for my wedding and I want you to have a new suit." She gathered up the jacket and pants as well as the shirt and tie they had picked earlier. "Now we need shoes."
"What?" David whined, "what's wrong with the shoes I have?" Donna looked down at his feet, "You mean those chucks? Not likely." She laughed, annoyed. "Come on, Donna. Just let me have this one thing?" He pleaded.
"Seriously? I don't know how you think that is a good look. That's why you need a girlfriend to help you learn how to dress." Donna looked up and saw Rose nearby, "Hey you! Can you come over here and help me fix my brother?" Donna held a hand out as if she were presenting him.
Rose walked over to the pair, watching David stare at her and looking slightly embarrassed. Donna laid out the suit jacket with the shirt and tie for Rose to see. "I have a wedding coming up and I want this one," she pointed at David, "to wear a new suit. We agreed on this suit here but now he wants to wear those shoes and throw the whole thing off." Donna gestured at David's shoes and Rose noticed the pink in his cheeks turning to a bright red.
Rose picked up the shirt and jacket and held it up to his chest. She asked him to hold it as she took a step back and took a moment to enjoy her view as she looked him up and down. "I don't know, I kind of like it," she said in all honesty. David grinned ear to ear, pleased with her answer then looked at Donna with an "I told you so," look and stuck out his tongue.
Donna rolled her eyes, "honestly, it must be a teenager thing." She took the shirt and jacket back from David. "There's nothing wrong with being comfortable," David added. "Fine, but you better not complain about anything else." She grabbed the rest of the clothes and huffed as she walked to the register.
"Thanks for taking my side, not many people are brave enough to disagree with her." He nodded toward Donna with his head. "I had lots of experience, my Mum isn't easy to argue with either." Rose said with a tongue in teeth grin.
Her smile was infectious, David noticed, as his grin grew wider and he laughed. "Fair enough. I've seen you around school, what's your name?" Rose blushed at the fact that he's noticed her before, "my name's Rose, Rose Tyler."
"David! Don't forget, we have dinner reservations in twenty minutes!" Donna yelled from across the store as she paid for the clothes. "Yes Ma 'me," he yelled back. He turned back to Rose, still smiling. "Well, I guess I will see you at school. Thanks for your help, Rose Tyler." He waved at her and jogged away toward his sister. Rose stood frozen, and waited until he was out of the building before she let out a huge, satisfied, sigh.
For the first time in ages, Rose couldn't wait for the weekend to end so she could go back to school and see David. Her imagination got away from her during that time as she played different scenarios in her head of David confessing his love to her and whisking her away. She knew that wouldn't really happen, but it was fun to think about.
It was Sunday afternoon and she walked into a nearby coffee shop to unwind after a busy morning at work. After getting her coffee, she stepped aside and checked her phone. She was oblivious to everything around her when she heard a familiar voice. "Hello, Rose Tyler." Rose glanced up to see David sitting at a small table, working on his homework, sporting another grin.
"Hey David," Rose said a little more excited than she wanted to sound. "What brings you here?" She wanted to smack herself for asking, it was obvious. He didn't pay attention, "I had to get out of the house. I have a lot of family coming into town for the wedding Saturday and I have to finish my work."
Rose looked down at his books, "what are you working on?" David held up a paper with a very complicated formula written on it, "physics," he said with a smile. Rose took the paper from him and examined it, "Wow, impressive. I never understood physics myself."
"It's not so hard once you learn all the formulas," David took the paper back. "This is actually a side project I'm working on for school." He leaned forward and whispered, "I'm going to invent time travel." He sat back with a smirk on his face. Rose giggled, "Ok, but when you do, can you please go back and stop me from trying to dye my own hair when I was 14?"
David laughed, "Deal. Was it really that bad?" Rose nodded and started to blush, "I thought it would be cool to dye my hair pink. My Mum was at work and I managed to get more pink dye on the floor and counters than in my hair. I didn't even spread the color evenly so I ended up with pink blotches in my hair, some darker than others. I ended up having to cut it and that made it worse."
David started to laugh harder. "Stop it," Rose said playfully. "It was weeks before I got my hair looking somewhat normal again." Rose started laughing too, remembering how ridiculous it looked.
"Do you have any pictures of it?" David asked. Rose smirked, "Like I would ever show them to you, or anybody for that matter." David pouted, "Aw, come on. You can't tell me a story like that without letting me see some evidence." Rose stood up, "No," she said sternly but in a joking manner. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get home. My Mum is waiting for me so I can help her with her hair before her date tonight." David waved goodbye as Rose walked to the door. "I hope you're not dying it?" He yelled before she exited. Rose looked back and laughed while shaking her head no.
The rest of the week was uneventful for Rose. She used to see David at school all the time, now that she was hoping to see him, he was nowhere to be found. She caught a glimpse of him in the hallway a couple of times on her way to class but neither had time to talk. He still managed to make eye contact, shooting her a grin, as he passed by.
Sunday came around again and Rose was once again headed to the coffee shop after another crazy morning at work. When she walked in she found David sitting at the same table as he did the week before, as if he were waiting for her. Once he spotted her, he smiled broadly and waved at her, inviting her to join him. She got her coffee and sat down across from him, eager to ask him about his week.
"So, how was your sister's wedding?" she asked.
David took a drink from his mug and swallowed, the look on his face told Rose that things didn't go as planned. "Well, Donna left him at the altar."
"What?" Rose said, surprised.
"Before you go judging her, let me explain. Just days before the wedding Donna learned that he was involved in some shady stuff. Illegal stuff. She told me about it and we did some investigating and it was far worse than she originally thought." David took another sip of coffee, watching Rose's expression as she listened intently. "The morning of her wedding I went with her to the police station and she told them everything." He tried to hold in a giggle as he pictured it in his head, "she was still in her wedding dress too, running around the streets trying to hail a taxi, everyone thought she was crazy."
Rose laughed, easing the tension. "How did your Mum take it?"
"Oh, she was livid," David told her, "but after the police came and arrested him, she eased up. A little."
"Yeah, but all that hard work and planning," Rose said.
"Well, we still had the reception," David told her happily.
"Really?" she asked, surprised.
"Yeah, we ate, drank, and danced the night away. We even have some great photos since the photographer was already paid for. It was the most fun, non-wedding reception I've ever been to. I would have invited you but I don't have your phone number." David's cheeks started to turn pink, the words escaped him before he could stop himself.
The two sat silently for a moment as the tension grew between them. David stared down at his coffee then glanced up at Rose with only his eyes, "can I?" He cleared his throat and sat taller, "can I have your phone number?"
Rose blushed in return, she felt the heat burning her cheeks. "Yeah, give me your phone." He handed it to her and she typed in her number for him. She handed it back and their hands grazed each other's in the process, and they both fought the urge to reach back for the other's hand.
After a moment Rose's phone beeped. She read the message and frowned, "It's my Mum, she texted 911 so I need to get home." She got up and started to gather her things. "The world must be ending." She told him sarcastically.
David laughed quietly and half-smiled, "ok." Deep inside he was sad that she had to leave so soon. She said goodbye as she walked out of the shop.
Rose began walking home, she didn't like the fact that she had to leave already but she was still happy about how their meeting went. Her phone beeped again and she saw a message from a new number. It read, "Goodbye Rose Tyler."
