"See anything you like, sir?"
Fiyero glanced up from the menu. "What do you recommend, miss?"
"The double-fried cheeseburger and the tomato soup make an excellent combination. Though, my personal favorite is the chicken nugget meal."
The king smiled and returned his attention to the crayon-covered booklet in front of him. "Then I'll take the burger and a small tomato soup, please. And a cup of grape juice."
"And I'll have the garden avocado salad with grilled chicken, and a cup of orange juice please," Elphaba smiled, closing her booklet.
"Coming right up!" The waitress, the eight-year-old princess of the Vinkus, took the menus away and went behind the counter of her play kitchen and went to work preparing the food.
"Admit it, this is the best date I've ever taken you on," Fiyero chuckled.
They were currently in their daughter, Fanah's, bedroom, being the honored guests at the grand opening of the newest restaurant, The Green Lady (affectionately named after the emerald queen). Their daughter had developed a love of business initiative (from her mother), and food (from her father), and put the two together and opened a restaurant, serving the castle staff whenever they had time to sit and play.
"Well, this restaurant has very good reviews so far," Elphaba smiled. "The kitchen staff and the maids couldn't stop raving about it."
"And I hear the owner gives discounts to loyal customers."
"You need to sign up for the rewards card!" Fanah called from the 'kitchen'. "And there's a five-dollar signup fee."
"Five dollars?" Fiyero gasped, his mouth agape.
"It's worth it. Every tenth meal is discounted thirty percent."
"What about the 'I gave you life' discount?" the king muttered under his breath, and Elphaba chuckled.
"Come on, Yero," Elphaba grinned. "We need to support local businesses."
"I am supporting the local businesses! Do you know how many loopholes I had to jump through to allow this place to set up shop here, rent-free? It wasn't easy, Fae."
"And I really appreciate it. Your investment was not in vain," Fanah said, returning with the food. "Enjoy!"
"Thank you," Fiyero smiled, looking down at his small, plastic burger and small, plastic can of tomato soup inside a bowl.
"This definitely beats the food at that four-star restaurant you took me to our senior year of Shiz," Elphaba smiled as she pretended to eat her salad, which consisted of two pieces of plastic lettuce, a plastic avocado, and a plastic chicken drumstick.
"This is the best burger I've ever had!" Fiyero smiled enthusiastically.
Fanah beamed. "I'm glad you're enjoying the food."
Fiyero took his last slurp of soup as Elphaba finished her salad.
"Are you full, or would you like dessert?"
"There's always room for dessert!" the king beamed, and Elphaba rolled her eyes.
"Do you have chocolate cake?" she asked.
"We have double chocolate cake with chocolate filling and chocolate icing," the princess recited.
"I suppose it'll have to do," Fiyero faux sighed.
"That'll be perfect," Elphaba countered, shooting her husband a look.
Once dessert was finished, Fanah returned with their bill.
"Eighty-seven dollars?!" the king gasped. "If I had known this was gonna be so expensive –"
Fanah crossed her arms. "I need to pay my employees."
"You don't have any employees."
"Because I can't afford to pay them!"
"Fae, can we split this?"
"I'm sorry. I didn't bring any cash," Elphaba said apologetically.
"We also accept credit cards," Fanah chirped.
"You said this was your treat, dearest."
"That was before I knew I was going to pay eighty-seven dollars for some burgers and salad," Fiyero grumbled under his breath as he fished his wallet out of his back pocket. He got out his credit card and handed it to his daughter. He heard the cash register make its fake, play noises and a moment later, Fanah came back with a slight frown.
"I'm sorry, sir, but your card was declined."
Fiyero's face dropped as Elphaba almost fell over with laughter.
"There must be some mistake. Try swiping it again."
"I tried swiping it four times. Declined each time. I even wiped it on my skirt."
"Try mine, sweetie," Elphaba said, wiping away her tears and pulling her card out.
"How was my card declined?" Fiyero asked as Fanah took Elphaba's card back to the register.
"It's okay, Yero. I won't tell anyone."
"First of all, the portions are small and the food is overpriced. If cards are out here getting declined, maybe the prices should be lowered. Fae, do you know how bad it looks if the king can't take his queen out for a nice dinner at their daughter's restaurant without his card getting declined?"
"I think you're getting a bit too involved in this."
Fanah came back with Elphaba's card and a receipt. "You're all good, ma'am. Just sign here, please."
Elphaba smirked at her husband as she scribbled her name at the bottom of the paper strip. The look on his face made her burst into fresh laughter.
"I can't believe this," Fiyero groaned, slowly rising to his feet.
"Thank you for dining at The Green Lady. I hope to see you back here soon," Fanah beamed.
"Not at these prices, you won't," the king muttered, ignoring his wife's expression and his daughter's laugher as he shuffled out of the room.
