St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, London, England
Sirius Black's Room
Year 2000
There were so many things Kaylee was feeling in that moment as she rushed to St. Mungo's. Joy. Relief. Excitement. But she also wanted to cry some more. She wanted to laugh. She wanted to dance. And if Bellatrix had been alive and was instead held captive, Kaylee for sure would have rubbed it in her face. Would have yelled it at her, and adorning that familiar smirk passed onto her from her father to piss her off even more.
But she settled down on feeling relieved for she realized she no longer have to wonder if her father will ever wake. That the potion that she and Hermione had concocted had worked on him. And now, it may also work on Neville's parents.
When she burst inside of the hospital, she went straight for her father's room. She did not spare anyone a glance, her thoughts only focused on her father and, therefore, completely missing Susan trying to catch her attention.
Kaylee rushed to his room but stopped outside in the hallway when she saw Harry and Hermione sitting down, their faces crestfallen as they stared off at the opposite wall from them. Her footsteps slowed, her own expression turning to one of confusion. Why were they looking so downhearted?
"Harry? 'Mione?" she called.
When they both looked up at her, she could tell something was off. If she was not already suspicious about their behavior before, their reaction to her right now set off the alarm bells in her head. Harry refused to maintain eye contact and instead kept looking down, avoiding seeing her eyes. And Hermione, although she tried to tone it down, she was looking at her with pity.
She was not expecting any of that.
"What's the matter?" she asked them.
Hermione stood up, shuffling her feet. She was nervous, Kaylee noted. For whatever reason, something had gotten her best friend worked up.
"I…we…" Hermione stuttered.
Kaylee waited patiently. At this point, Harry still did not move from where he sat, nor did he look at her.
"Something happened," Hermione tried again for the both of them. "We don't know how. We didn't even know it was a possibility."
She sighed. "'Mione, just spit it out, please. I want to see my Dad as soon as I learn what you and Harry are both bothered about."
They both winced at the mention of Sirius. Sirius, who was currently inside the room, listening to Remus as he explained the two decades and almost two years prior of events, in replace to his missing memories.
"It's about your father," Hermione replied. Kaylee smiled, which slowly diminished as her best friend continued talking. "Something went wrong. It must have been a side effect of the potion but…" Hermione paused, nervous and scared about the outcome. "..but Sirius…he can't remember twenty or more so of his memories."
Her heart, which was beating erratically in excitement to reunite with her father, stopped. All other sounds faded and the only thing she could hear is the echo of Hermione's words in her mind. Something went wrong… he can't remember twenty or more so of his memories. Potion.. side effect.
Remember.
He can't remember.
"W-What?" she stammered out, shaking her head in sheer denial. "No, no, you're wrong. He can't forget about me. He's my Dad. He can't just stop knowing me!"
"I'm sorry," was the only thing Hermione said in return.
Kaylee shook her head. "No, you're lying!"
Hermione kept on apologizing. She was looking at her in sorrow, eyes in pain and regret as she watched her deny the truth. And Harry had finally stood up, flanking Hermione's side.
Upon looking in her godbrother's teary green eyes, she realised it was not just her that her father had not remembered. From the pain in his eyes, she knew Harry had also been forgotten. And Hermione. Maybe even Ron, and everyone else he did not know or was not close to for the past twenty years.
Kaylee looked between Harry and Hermione, who showed no lies and deceit. Her father really did not remember them. "I…I n-need to see." She began to step forward but her friends both immediately blocked her, standing in front of the door. "What are you doing? Let me in!" she shrieked when she tried to push passed them and they kept pushing her back, firmly but gently.
"It's not a good idea." Harry said.
"What do you mean 'it's not a good idea'?! That's my Dad in there, and I have the right to see him!" Kaylee cried in outrage. "Harry, 'Mione, let me go in!" she protested and yelled the more they blocked the door, with other healers now coming to help reign her in, arms ready to trap her in their hold.
Hermione tried to explain what happened previously about Sirius' delicate condition but suddenly the door opened, and she and Harry fell in a heap inside the room. Kaylee followed soon after, stumbling down between her friends' bodies. However, as soon as she righted herself, she went face-to-face with Remus.
"Remus?" she asked, asking silently whether her father had forgotten her. Surely, he will not lie about it. But the man in question just shook his head, his expression sad.
That is when she knew, and her heart stopped altogether from the pain of it.
When she peeked above Remus' shoulder, she saw her father on the bed vacantly watching her, and not recognising her. Gone was the light that would come in his eyes or the proud smile that he would adorn as soon as he saw his daughter. Nothing to tell he knew of her.
They brought him back from his comatose state only to lose him by this unforeseen event.
And for Kaylee, it was like losing her father for the third time.
~O~
"It's okay. I'm okay," she breathed, trying to look and feel strong in front of them while in the arms of Molly. She forcefully smiled as she pulled back and turned to face the others. Everyone was there. Even Percy. "I'm okay." she said again. At this point, Kaylee did not even know who she was trying to convince more. Them or herself. But it was not okay.
She knew they know that, and she knew it for herself. The only way it will truly be okay is if her father recovered his memories.
"I'll be fine," she told them. "I'm going to continue visiting once a week and if I'm not there for it, let me know how Dad is going or when he has his…his…memories…" she choked on the word. "...back." If ever, was the silent message.
After she left them abruptly, Hermione turned to them. "I'm going to stay with her until she's okay, make sure she won't do anything stupid like the last time."
"Yes, that is a good idea, dear." Molly said.
Except when Hermione flooed to her house, Kaylee was nowhere to be found.
And because it was who she is—a worrywart—she started fretting.

The moment she arrived home, Kaylee's pretense of appearing strong crumbled. She kept asking herself why her father would not remember her, and every time she would come up blank. All she knew was that it should not have happened. She and Hermione had been careful with the potion, never settling for anything less than perfect before administering the potion to him.
They had researched for a year, delved into the history of every ingredient she and Hermione had used, studying the healing properties and its effects. The phoenix tears would not have had any negative effects, nor was the pint of the blood that was added.
So, why?
She sniffled, finally calming down. She was not going to keep crying at her misfortune and be inconsolable…no, she was going to pick herself back up and face this situation head on. And while she cannot do anything to change what has already happened, she will find a solution, be there for her father even if just as a friend, and find out what went wrong. It was the only thing she can do as of now.
Standing up, Kaylee decided to go for a run in her animagus form as running in this form has always made her feel better after an ordeal. She needed to clear her mind of any negativities for what lay ahead and must find the courage to face her father who does not know her. It would be tough, but she must find the courage, and hope that his memories return. She needed it not only for herself, but for Harry too.
After informing her house elf, she went around the back of her house and transformed into her animagus, allowing the familiar sensation of her bones shifting, breaking and taking a new shape, to occur to accommodate for her new form.
When that was done, her lithe form bounded towards the forest, her movements quick and agile. She ran beneath the trees, littered with the white canopy of snow, the cool air rushing past her furred body. This is what she needed; a time away from her troubles and from the stress of it all. It was not as if she forgot, more so just storing it at the back of her mind to face for later. What she needed at this moment is a place to clear her mind else she loses control and go on a avenging spree.
Nope, not going there, she thought.
And so, she laid down, head resting on one paw beside the lake while the other flicked the water before her as she watched her reflection while it wavered. Looking back at her was a long, sleek face, adorned with whiskers on each side of her snout. Her body covered in fur was smooth to touch and coloured black. Her blue-green eyes looked fierce as she stared on but Kaylee, herself, can see the sadness that lingered beneath the orbs.
She must have fallen asleep for the next thing she knew, night has fallen and she was startled awake when her ears caught the sound of a twig snapping. Alert, she rose from the ground and cautiously looked around. She was grateful for being an animagus for it gave her a night vision that was handy in these situations, plus with the black coating she had, was able to camouflage with the night.
Except, what she came face-to-face with the next second, had been able to spot her so easily. They appeared from the bush, pushing and jostling each other, laughing and yelling in mirth, all around having a good time when suddenly, they stopped moving and as one, turned to look at her. Sniffing.
There was five of them; all with golden eyes visible from the dark. Then another one of them came, chuckling under his breath. This new set of eyes, however, were red and had immediately zeroed in on her.
Like a deer caught in the headlights, she stood frozen where she was and stared. What kind of human had red eyes that shone so bright? Were they even human? And those golden eyes… she stared back at the group with those eyes, and her own ones widened upon recognising the three of them.
Edward. Jasper. Emmet.
And two other people; one with blonde hair similar to Draco's, and the other with dark hair.
"Well, aren't we lucky tonight, boys?" her eyes flicked to the one with the red eyes as he moved forward, a smirk on his face. "Not only did we come here to have a bonding time but one of us will get a snack, and it smells so delicious that I wish it'd be mine."
"You wish, Garett. That blood is mine." Emmett countered, licking his lips.
Her body tensed, finally realising what exactly she was dealing with here. Though the red or golden eyes did not make sense as the ones she learned at Hogwarts only had black eyes, the predatory behavior they were all showing and the bloodthirstiness in their eyes did. Vampires. The lot of them. Including the Cullen brothers.
Great, she hissed in her mind. Harry's bad luck must be rubbing off on me.
Now, what is she supposed to do without revealing who and what she is?
"I hope you know you are not the only two that are interested in claiming the prize." Jasper said, smirking at them.
"Eleazar and I will sit this one out," the blonde man said. "Go knock yourselves."
"With pleasure, Dad." Emmett said. Then the three of them suddenly sprang into action.
And oh, for the love of Merlin, how she ran! She ran like she has never had before, and she thanked for the first time the Malfoys, who with their strict rules in no rule breaking, she was able to run like this. She dodged the fallen logs, jumped above the stumps and into the bushes, her body which was light made it possible to run faster. And yet, the three of them were almost gaining on her.
She despaired. She could not go on for much longer no matter how much she wanted to. Unlike them who were supernatural, and though she was a witch, she was still human. And humans tire easily.
She heard them laughing, thrilled at the chase she gave them.
If only she could laugh, she would laugh bitterly and in dismay. Kaylee Black, daughter of Sirius Black, one fourth of the golden quadruple, and a war heroine, dying at the hands of vampires. It was laughable. But she closed her eyes, thinking and trying to find a way to get out of this mess and rescue her own self.
For she was a Black, damn it! And Blacks do not give up so easily.
And when she opened her eyes, they were lit with fire.
For she knew what to do despite the consequences it might bring.
If only the hulking form of Emmett did not barrel onto her side.

When his brothers and Garett were out of sight, Edward was left behind with his father and Eleazar. His eyes stared off at the space where the black panther had been, eyes filled in curiosity. The animal seemed familiar, it called to him. He had studied her, wondering why he did not want to attack her despite the mouthwatering aroma that hung over him. It was delicious but he abhorred the thought of killing and draining it dry. Just why exactly, he did not know. For the only person to have this effect on him was—
Kaylee!
He remembered the eyes the panther had, how distinguishable. Blue-green eyes the colour his Kaylee has. It was also his favourite colour, one that he would remember anywhere. A colour which was not commonly found in panthers. And though he could not make sense of the situation at the moment, he had to save the animal from his brothers and friend.
He ran after them, leaving his father and honorary uncle in the dust.
~O~
Something snapped. Broken.
She screamed at the blinding pain. In pure agony.
And something sat heavy above her.
~O~
Edward faltered in his steps when he heard the scream.
But he kept running. If he stopped now, he would not be able to save the panther.
Just the thought of it had his un-beating heart hurting.
~O~
Emmett's weight was gone as Jasper shoved him to the side with a loud thud.
The honey-blonde haired man grinned down at the unmoving form of the panther.
But he, too, was gone and was replaced by the dark headed one they called Garett.
They pulled him down too and the three wrestled each other to the ground, all trying to get the upper hand and win the right to drink her blood. However, they stopped and looked at her as she stood on all fours again, limping as she faced them.

They were in agreement that this was the only time they will ever share a meal. And so, the three worked together to bring her down.
~O~
He was close. And then he was there.
He saw the panther, its back right leg not quite touching the ground, and knew it was broken.
It faced Emmett, Jasper and Garret without fear but with determination and strength. Despite the broken limb, it managed to dodge their attempts to bring it down. It further fueled the three vampires' rage. And hunger.
It was when they were quickly gaining the upper hand, before his brother snapped its neck, did he finally step in.
"ENOUGH!" he yelled, before bulldozing all three of them away from the panther.
His brothers and Garret looked at him in annoyance. "What?" they hissed, crouching low.
Edward looked behind him and stared at the familiar blue-green eyes, which screamed at him for help even knowing he was one of them.
"Don't do what you're about to do," Edward said. "Emmett, Jasper, does it not seem familiar to you?"
Silence.
"No."
"Look at the eyes."
They did, and both stiffened. Horrified. Eyes like Kaylee's, who they already considered a sister.
"What?" Emmett asked.
"I'm not sure if what my gut tells me is true."
Garret was confused. What the hell is going on? "What are the three of you talking about?"
They ignored him. Before any more could be said, all four set of eyes watched as before them the body of the panther slumped to the ground, passing out in pain and exhaustion. And the next second, the panther changed from its long and lean body to the graceful body of Edward's mate.
Kaylee.
