Before Fairy tail
Igneel sat at the entrance of a cave that sat in the middle of the forest far away from any human civilization, but the great red dragon wasn't alone no he lived with his five-year-old son Natsu Dragneel a small salmon hair dragon slayer.
Igneel was watching his son pouring over some ancient scrolls Igneel had spent centuries collecting. Natsu had proved to be a smart child in his own way; he got easily distracted but when Igneel could get him to sit and listen to him Natsu picked up on things fairly quickly…. He learned his letters quickly but had trouble stringing them together into words but that was only a problem in the human language when it came to dragon script and another ancient language it came easier to him. Igneel wasn't sure why that was but Natsu seems to enjoy learning the older languages than the newer one. Igneel sighed knowing that he would have a hard time in the human world if he didn't know how to read or write in the human language. He was proud of his little pyro was able to pick up dead languages and languages from other lands not to mention languages from other spices Natsu excelled at speaking to the animals in the forest and the dragon language but for some reason, the human language still came as a challenge for the little dragon slayer, but he could understand it just fine.
"પપ્પા?" Natsu asked looking up to the red dragon
"what is it my little pyro?" Igneel asked looking down at the confused look of his son
"હું આ સમજી શકતો નથી" Natsu spoke holding up an old scroll written in the old dialect he was speaking.
"Which part?" Igneel asked moving his head down to get a better look at the writing
"હજારો પુસ્તકો વાંચવા કરતાં હજારો માઇલ ચાલવું વધુ સારું છે." Natsu read Igneel thought for a second gave a small smile towards his son
"it means experience beats theory" Natsu still looked confused Igneel sighed "it means that you can read a bunch of books about the world around you and you can learn a lot from reading but in the end, nothing will beat the experience you need to experience the world to truly understand it." Igneel explained
"તો પછી હું આ કેમ વાંચું છું?" Natsu asked Igneel just sighed
"because you still need to learn from books… that is enough for today why don't you go and have some fun before dinner." Igneel spoke Natsu smiled he put down the scroll and ran off into the forest.
the Fairy tail guild some years later
It had been a year since Natsu had joined the Fairy Tail guild. Natsu seemed to fit in right away and already he got the reputation that he was reckless and dumb.
If only they knew…
Erza helped him improve on the human language so now he could read and write in their Language but he still enjoyed the older languages.
"Hey, levy what are you doing?" Natsu asked as he came up to Levy reading a book under a tree.
"oh, hey Natsu… umm just trying to understand this." She spoke a little nervously. Levy Mcgarden had been in Fairy tail for a couple of years but she was still really shy and Natsu excited personally and magic intimidated her.
"oh, is that a book in Teurtuin?" Natsu asked looking over her shoulder
"how- how did you know that?" She asked surprised that Natsu recognized the old language so quickly.
In response, Natsu just shrugged "just lucky I guess." He smiled but Levy didn't believe Natsu. There were thousands of languages dead languages plus languages from different regions and yet Natsu picked the right language in less than a minute of looking at her book. "well I will leave you to it." Natsu spoke after the awkward minute of silence of Levy just staring at the pink-haired boy. Natsu began to walk away and that snaped Levy out of her thoughts
"Natsu wa-wait!" she called trying to get up and follow Natsu but in her hast, she tripped and fell on her face. "ouch…" she groaned
"Levy are you ok?" he asked suddenly right beside her again 'how does he do that?' she thought "umm yeah I'm fine." She stammered as she got to her feet and brushed her self off
"here is your book," Natsu stated handing her the old Teurtuin book.
"umm, thanks." Levy grabbed the book in shaking hands
"ok well see you." Natsu made to leave again but levy quickly grabbed his arm making him stop "levy?"
"can-can you read Teurtuin?" Levy asked staring at the ground in her nervousness
"uhh yeah," Natsu stated a confused look on his face
"umm Natsu… can… you umm…. Teach me?" She squeaked still not meeting his eyes
"can't you read it? I mean You do have a book on it weren't you just reading it?" Natsu asked his head tilting to the side in confusion
"umm well, I have been… trying to teach my self how to read it but…" her voice trailed off
"you don't need to me so nervous Levy I can teach you," Natsu stated brightly Levy's head snapped up to see the smiling face of Natsu.
"rea-really you would teach me!?" levy gasped
"sure, why not," Natsu stated he grabbed Levy's hand and lead her into the forest.
A little later
"umm Natsu may I ask you a question?" Levy asked after a couple of hours of Natsu teaching Levy Teurtuin.
"umm." Natsu responded as he was looking at Levy's book he looked different when he was calm and reading in fact he looked a little older and wiser just having the old book in his hand. "what is it, Levy?" Natsu asked looking up from the book when Levy didn't ask her question because she was to busy staring at Natsu.
"oh, umm I just wanted to know how you know to read Teurtuin." She asked
"my dad taught it to me." Cam Natsu simple reply
"do you know how to speak other languages?" Levey asked
"yep," Natsu replied going back to reading the book not seeing the shocked expression on Levy's face. Levy always loved to read and her dream was to learn as many ancient and new languages as posable and here in front of her was someone that knew many languages. 'how many do you know'… she wondered she had so many questions she wanted to know more because to her Natsu was no longer the loud, destructive fire mage; to her, he was a boy full of mysteries that she wanted to discover.
"umm Natsu I Have to go but can we meet up again tomorrow?" Levy asked getting to her feet and dusting herself off
"umm, sure same time?" Natsu asked closing the book and handing it back to her
"umm, you can keep the book until you finish it." Levy quickly stated punching the book back to Natsu
"ok, thanks. So, see you tomorrow?" Natsu spoke brightly also getting to his feet and a huge smile on his face.
"umm yeah." Levy squeaked a slight blush on her face as she gathered her notes and ran off towards the city
"umm, she is a little wired." Natsu sighed to himself a little confused by Levy's reactions watching as she ran off before turning to head home.
The next day
Levy was already waiting for him she was surrounded by old books and scrolls
"umm Levy what is all of this?" Natsu asked coming into the small clearing seeing it was filled with books and he was wondering where it all came from.
"umm well, you-you said that you kno-know more then Teurtuin so…" her voice faltered a little her face turning red and her averting her gaze.
"you want me to teach you all of these?" Natsu asked gesturing to all the books and scrolls around them
"if you know them yes… I would like to learn as much as I can…" Levy stammered
"why?" Natsu asked picking up a random book and flipping through the pages.
"because I love to learn and it is- is my dream," Levy stated trying to put as much confidence into her voice as she could. She was worried that Natsu would say no she wondered if this was too much to ask for, and she would have to go back trying to teach herself because Natsu wouldn't want to spend time teaching her all of this.
"ok" Natsu stated sitting down next to her
"what?" Levy squeaked surprised Natsu agreed so easily
"I will teach you what I can!" Natsu stated giving her a huge smile.
Levy couldn't help but smile back "thanks Natsu."
For the next several month's Levy and Natsu met up in the woods where Natsu taught Levy how to read and write in different languages. occasionally they would find themselves speaking to each other in the language they were studying. They would also speak in other languages when they found themselves alone. During those several months, Levy became more confident in herself also thanks to Natsu. She no longer stammered or was nervous around other members of the guild she made new friends in the guild and later even formed her own team.
Levy never told anyone about Natsu secret knowledge she felt that Natsu would want it that way seeing that he would always go back to the energetic dragon slayer who started fights when he was in the guild. Levy felt special that she knew a secret side to Natsu one that no one else would know.
Years have passed but Levy still goes to Natsu when she finds herself stuck on an ancient text she was reading or just wanting to talk to someone who could understand more than one language. Even after all of these years, she kept Natsu secret and now even if she was to tell someone she didn't think anyone would believe her but that was ok she would keep the smart side of Natsu to herself.
