A/N: Continued as promised…..
The auror didn't come until two days later, early in the morning. Hermione had been up feeding the little baby, Simon, she named him privately in their daughter's room. He looked a lot healthier now and so adorable in a blue and gray matching set. She sniffed, he didn't smell adorable. She grinned, preparing to change him when she heard a knock on the door. "Severus could you see who that is? I'm changing Si- uh, the baby," she asked, hoping he didn't notice her slip up.
She knew she shouldn't get attached but it was hard not to. Especially when her own child was only a few months away. Two babies. The thought excited her more than she could imagine. Sure, it would be a challenge, but it would be a blessing too. He started to fuss a bit as she changed him, wriggling on the table, his little legs kicking.
It was a mild protest, because he stopped almost as soon as he started. Kissing his forehead, she got out a nice green onesie out of the drawer. It wasn't plain like the yellow, it had a teddy bear on it, but nothing personal. No sign that she had become attached. "Hermione, bring the baby it's the auror," she heard her husband call from downstairs. She cradled the baby boy in her arms, feeling her heart dip.
'Get a hold of yourself Hermione, she chided, it's only been a few days.' But inwardly she knew it was too late. She was attached. Hermione went down the steps, her heart like lead in her chest. She saw Severus and a male auror with dirty blonde hair and a wiry beard standing in the foyer. The man looked uncomfortable standing with Severus and completely astonished when he saw Hermione, his blue eyes fixated on her swollen stomach.
He cleared his throat, "H-Hello M-Mrs. Snape. I'm Auror Thomas Grady. I was telling your husband about how we canvassed the neighborhood and no one saw or heard anything suspicious the morning Mr. Snape found the child." He scratched his head, seemingly unsure of how to proceed. "Um, well I've come to take the child to the holding area at St. Mungo's. We'll keep searching for the parents but the child has clearly been abandoned."
Hermione pressed Simon close to her bosom. And her husband caught the movement. "What will you do next? I mean, after he's been entered into the holding area?" Severus asked.
Auror Grady sighed, "Not much we can do. We'll enter him into the system. Generate a name for him using a spell and send him to the orphanage after the hospital gives him his check up. Babies aren't usually abandoned in the magical world. It's usually later, after no signs of magic have been detected."
Squibs. Hermione looked down at the little baby in her arm. Something told her that Simon couldn't be a squib. And even if he was, that did not stop her heart from tugging at the thought of giving him up. "Mr. Grady, could you excuse us for a moment?"
The auror nodded and Hermione dragged him into the kitchen. "Severus…...I don't want to give up Simon."
Severus drew Hermione close, his hand brushing the baby's soft black hair gently. He hadn't wanted to give up the baby either. "You named him Simon?"
She nodded. "Yes. Simon Severus Snape. That is…..if you like it?"
Severus's hearted twisted painfully in his chest. "I love the name and him, if I'm being honest. But…...this is dangerous Hermione," he warned. "The aurors might not let us keep the child and I don't want your heart broken."
"Why shouldn't they let him stay here? Someplace where he'll have loving parents. They left him with us for two days. Obviously they can't care too much." Hermione reasoned and Severus ran a comforting hand through her hair.
"I'll see what I can do," He bent down to kiss the baby boy's head, "Wish me luck kids," he whispered, rubbing his wife's belly fondly. His dark eyes gazed up at Hermione and she smiled, linking their arms. The two of them returned to Auror Grady, who had been fiddling with his wand. He blushed when they reappeared. "Mr. Grady. If my wife and I were to head to St. Mungo's ourselves, would we be able to enter him in the system as our son?"
The auror looked surprised, but smiled. "Um, yes. I suppose you could. It would certainly save us a lot of trouble. You'll need to head over to the hospital right away and there will be a lot of forms to sign….."
Severus nodded. "Thank you Mr. Grady. Anything else?"
"No. Nothing. Congratulations Professor Snape, Mrs. Snape." The young man said enthusiastically and then he headed out the door.
