Amethyst tried her best to keep an eye on Steven, to be a friend and a mother and a sister all at once. Mostly because she didn't know what she was supposed to be to him. All she knew was that she wasn't that good at the mother part. Pearl and Garnet had that covered. They were the ones to change his diapers and feed him and buy him clothes. Occasionally, Amethyst would help out with that, but usually she just played with him.
Of course, there were times when she was forced to be the 'mother'. And those times were happening more and more lately. Pearl had said that it was called 'PTSD' and that Steven was lucky that it wasn't so bad. Amethyst huffed. Yeah. He was totally lucky to have nightnares almost every night.
Amethyst stood up, dropping the brown thing that she had been inspecting. She could hear him now, his quiet whimpering sounding like screams with her sensitive hearing. She started running towards the door, rolling when her feet became too slow.
Quietly, she walled out out of her room, careful not to startle him. Last time she had been too loud and he had activated his shield, knocking her across the room. The door closed behind her with a click. It didn't open again; Garnet and Pearl were still looking for Jasper.
Carefully, she climbed the ladder ro his bunk. His face had a sheen of sweat, she noticed, as he wrestled to get free from the covers. He wasn't speaking, so she wasn't sure what he was dreaming of, as it changed regularly.
"Steven." She said, pulling the cover off of him. "Steven. Wake up man. It's over. It's done. Wake up." Her last words having more intensity and volume.
His eyes opened slowly, trying to resist the power of sleep. Finally he succeeded and sat up, eyes immediately focusing on her.
"Amethyst?" His voice was thick with sleep, but she could still hear the remainding fear.
"I'm here Steven." She climbed onto the bed with him, pulling his head into her shoulder. He sniffed. "What was it about?" She asked quietly.
Steven didn't look up as he wrapped his arms around her. "Pearl… She got stabbed again, but-but-but she didn't poof. She just looked at me and kept asking where my mom was." He sniffed again.
Amethyst didn't say anything, mostly because she didn't know what to say. She just continued to rub circles in his back until he fell asleep again. She stayed there the whole night and in the morning they didn't talk about it. But as she watched Steven leave with a happy smile, she had the distinct feeling that she was getting better at it.
