Chapter 6: Is Blood Thicker Than Water?

Kala meddled with her blood samples mechanically pipetting each type to the correct wells and tubes. Her thoughts were elsewhere. She pushed a timer and then almost slumped into her seat recalling the last time Wolfgang had visited her. Her cheeks grew hotter as she reminisced over the taste of his lips, the feel of his heart beating against hers. Their blood rushing at the same speed. Blood.

"Kala, blood!" a voice rang out behind her and Kala jolted in upright in her seat looking around deliriously and locating the sound origin to her friend.

She had found that being a sensate certainly challenged her attentional abilities but more positively speaking was also improving them. Receiving sensory input from eight other individuals was certainly bamboozling but Kala reminded herself was a gift, nonetheless.

She looked down at her laboratory coat and found a smear of scarlet spreading through her. She had zoned out while still clutching her pipette inadvertently apply pressure.

Kala's eyes widened as she called the similarity of the spread of blood on Wolfgang's uncle's lifeless corpse. She then cursed under her breath and rushed quickly to her feet, peeling off her lab coat to check whether the blood had run through.

It hadn't.

Kala bit her lip and sighed, she closed her eyes, took a minute and pulled the coat back on, turning to face her friend who was watching her with a face of confusion and concern. I've got to stop doing that. She told herself internally. This was the third time something like this had happened this week. Everyone within the lab knew her to have the steadiest of hands and she was aware that there was much talk of her not being her usual self.

Not to add the gossip surrounding her scandalously fainting at her own wedding, to their boss's boss's boss. Kala internally rolled her eyed. Her engagement to the company's CEO had certainly bred an interesting working dynamic.

All of which had been since floating around the lab like an obvious elephant in the room.

And to make matters worse, three people including her mother had already asked if she might be pregnant only adding to Kala's frustrations in the form of the Indian pre-marital sex debate. While Rajan and herself as of yet had restrained from taking this step, Kala struggled to decide on where she stood on the matter.

She weighed the several sides of herself as a devout Hindu, woman, daughter, fiancé and a migraine ensued.

She recalled the presence of Rajan shirtless in her bedroom and her and Wolfgang's heated exchange soon-after. How could she want one man, who resided in the dark depths of her mind with such a pure passion that seemed to almost outweigh any religious conflictions but not feel the same for the man physically in front of her, a good man, granted to her through their decree to be wed.

Was Wolfgang really a demon luring her away from what she knew to be righteous and true? Or was he simply truth in a psychically carnal form.

Kala's friend Neha smiled at her mischievously and nudged her arm, leading Kala to slowly draw it away, crossing it into a fold as she faced her workstation and pursed her lips. She then pushed a stray hair around her ear, glanced at the timer and scribbled down some observational notes.

"So…" Neha spoke teasingly leaning over the table to catch a glimpse of Kala's face. Kala drooped it more hiding into her work.

"You were thinking about him, were you not?" she smiled brightly while raising her eyebrows and gesturing towards Rajan who was busily working on a project in the distance within a glass-walled office.

Kala followed her friends gaze and then glanced back quickly.

"No." She replied slowly elongating the word in her soft accent.

Neha laughed.

"Kala you're are blushing." She grinned and Kala caught her breath. She turned away again and glanced at the clock.

"Could you finish the last step for me please?" Kala asked looking towards her friend with pleading eyes.

"I said I'd help my mother with something."

Her friend looked at her oddly however replied sweetly.

"Sure Kala, but next week's pani puri is on you okay?"

"I'll buy you as many as you want." Kala blow kissed back and then was out of the door before another word could be said.

Kala walked briskly down the deserted corridor disorientated and confused. Although her feet could feel the ground through her thinly lined shoes, she felt she was somewhere else altogether. She walked faster, her mind like a helium balloon drifting elsewhere, detached from her body when suddenly a jolt pulled her into cognition.

His scent hit her first, strong and fresh. Earthly musky, pine, coffee, water, petrichor. Kala took a breath and sighed.

"Kala." His voice continued to wake her, but she still felt as if she were falling, falling deeper and deeper…until her eyes fluttered open. Her pupils widening as she drank him in. Wolfgang stood next to her heaving her up at the hips, she slumped softly against his shoulder.

He shook her concerned. Kala murmured, he was so close to her, their noses touched, and she whined softly. Wolfgang frowned.

"You can't do this to yourself." He sighed and in one swift manoeuvre swept her into his arms.

"Also, when was the last time you ate something?" He asked eyeing her with the vigilance that was ingrained in him so deeply.

Since their last conversation, Kala appeared paler in complexion, her sandy undertones shadowed by a greyish haze.

"Sun said this is the second time this week." He interjected to which Kala smiled internally, recalling the unlikely friendship between her fellow sensate make her heart feel warm.

It's actually the third time this week she thought, realising too late that Wolfgang could hear her thoughts.

He cocked his head and gave her a look.

She hummed, curled against his torso and hid hoping that the world around her would just melt for a minute and intriguingly it did. It never got less fascinating.

She opened her eyes to Wolfgang's bedroom recalling its image from a previous visit. He carried her to his bed and laid her gently upon it before dragging a stool with his heavily booted foot to its side. He slumped into it and exhaled deeply.

"Kala, I'm serious." He spoke sternly and Kala immediately noticed the hitch in his tone wanting to pout in response.

"You've been avoiding me." He spoke more softly, sombrely but with understanding.

"Which I can deal with just about right now but this…?" He almost pleaded.

"I understand that you might not want to see me, but maybe one of the others..."

Kala shook her head and covered her face with her hands.

"No, there's no need, everyone already has a lot to manage. I need to face this myself. These are my own issues." She spoke matter-of-factly.

She rubbed her eyes and blinked at the ceiling rapidly.

And I'm the one who doesn't ask for help Wolfgang wondered fighting the urge to roll his eyes.

"Have there been any more nosebleeds?" he asked sighing and knowing too well not to duel with her stubbornness, it was almost as tough as his own.

She shook her head and he softly sighed with relief recalling her parent's suggesting her visiting the hospital for some medical tests.

It was strange how hospitals, places associated with healing and care could suddenly become an area so perturbing. So far Whispers was only aware of Will, Riley and Nomi and the cluster planned to keep things this way.

"Wolfgang -" Kala spoke pulling him from his thoughts, he turned to look at her realising how much he wished this could be their normal.

"What you asked me to do…" she spoke defeatedly, partly choking her words.

"It isn't easy, it should be but it isn't," she replied softly.

Wolfgang took in her words and closed his eyes. He let some seconds pass before standing up from the stool.

Kala's heart quickened. He's leaving. She thought and anxiety rained upon her heart.

However, Wolfgang did not leave. He simply kicked off his boots and walked round to the other side of his bed and laid down upon it. Straight as a plank, he looked up at the ceiling and spoke.

"I know." He replied and Kala felt some relief pipette itself into her. She rolled over to face him, and their eyes met in close proximity.

The intensity was so real.

How could someone so far, so unscathed by her bubble of reality be so close and familiar?

He was like a drop of water from another ocean changing the whole composition of her world. As she thought his, Wolfgang bravely neared her reaching out to touch her quivering lip with his thumb.

Kala both relished and despised the things he made her feel. I'm addicted. She thought to herself as she felt his skin brush hers.

"At the end of the day it's your decision," he spoke as nobly as he could. After all, all he wished was for her was to be safe and happy.

"I- Wolfgang opened his mouth to speak again but Kala didn't want to think anymore and so for a second, she didn't. She found that in that second her fingers had twisted into Wolfgang's shirt.

He looked down at her first and tried to contain the blood rushing inside of him, his eyes fluttering back to hers, probing…

"Kala?" he asked soothingly, and she stared back at him, slightly biting where he had not long ago touched her lip and with their next heartbeat her fist clutched slightly tighter.

Wolfgang let her tug him before sliding her even closer and slightly nuzzling the bridge of her nose. He could feel her nerves, her confliction, but their united want was stronger.

He edged closer, letting her know that from his side he was all in. It didn't take her long to accept his invite as their mouths joined and she grasped him desperately.

Wolfgang indulged her by rolling and hovering above her before slicing the distance left between them and kissing her hard as she cradled his head. He felt adrenaline seep into his veins, he missed her so much when they were apart and somehow their feelings for each other were only deepening with each day that passed.

How this was possible, neither of them understood.

"I know this is difficult for you and that you need time to make your decision" Wolfgang spoke circling her cheek with his thumb as she whined softly, "But know you have a choice, you don't have to marry him if you don't want to."

What if I can't choose? Kala thought and her breathing hitched.

Wolfgang felt a pang in his stomach and a thud in his heart as he felt her struggle. Sadly, he didn't have the answers she was desperately clawing for.

"Either way I know we can't deny this." He spoke tapping into their shared pool of feelings.

Kala stared back at him with her large intelligent brown eyes calculating and knowing in the deepest depth of her soul that he was right, being apart from him had caused a ripple of angst to surge through their entire cluster for days now, it was hurting them all.

Little did she expect her thoughts to reverberate in the sound of another voice.

"He's right," Sun spoke from the corner of Wolfgang's bedroom, a cigarette lit within her fingers, as she lightly looked away to display some sort of respect which all three of them knew was more for Kala' sake. The cluster knew of Wolfgang's indiscretions all too well.

Kala scrambled to get up crawling out of her and Wolfgang's intimate positioning as Wolfgang chuckled and moved out of the way to help her.

He looked back at and Sun and smiled softly.
