(A/N: Hey all back again with a new one, I know, I know, when the hell am I going to finish the rest of them right. Well I have some good and bad news. The bad news is, that my computer that all of my fiction is saved on is fried, I'm kinda depressed about it. I've had that computer for like eight years. The good news is that I have a new computer, but it will take more time than I anticipated for me to update the stories that I've already written because I have to rethink of all the concepts I originally had written down on my old computer for all of my other stories. More good news, this brand new story was saved to my email. I know you're thinking why in the hell didn't you do that with your other stories. Believe I asked myself that question as well. I have the entire weekend to myself and I do appreciate every reader, PM, review, favorite and follow that I have recieved. So to honor you all I'm going to take this weekend and redo all the concepts for my stories that I've already written and try to get at least two or three stories updated by Monday. Bare with me I assure you it will be worth the wait. But while you wait here's a new one. The concept for this one might seem familiar and I hope you all enjoy. While generally try to stay away from writing stories based on the actual show. This idea wouldn't stop kicking me in the head so I got it down on paper quickly. I hope you all like it. This is sort of my verison of Scandal. R&R and let me know what you think.)
"Killing Me Softly"
Senator Pope. She never thought she'd be able to say that out loud or even make it to the capitol when she first began her campaign. And yet here she was at 33 years old, one of the youngest African American female Republican Senators from her home state of California. The journey here was not an easy one by any means, but she was living out her dreams and making a difference in the world. At the end of the day it was all worth it. At least she hoped it would be.
She sat in her office on the east side of the capitol building gazing out of her window, which overlooked a rose garden. She sighed. If this was where she wanted to be, then why was she so unhappy. She turned her gaze to a photo on her desk. It was of her and her husband Edison Davis. They'd been married for five years. And they had been the longest five years of her life. Whoever said marriage was hard work was not lying by any means. This marriage was almost impossible to stick with. She'd never been so miserable and drained in her whole life.
She always had a dreadful feeling in the bottom of her gut that Edison was not the man for her. But he was safe and she'd known him for a long time. And they were just the kind of power couple people like to envision when they thought about a senator's marriage and a possible president one day. There were many reasons she stuck with this marriage. Love was not one of them. Sure when they first got married she loved him. She'd never been in love with him, but she thought that her feelings for him would grow into that life-changing earth shattering kind of love eventually. But eventually never came. So instead she focused on her career and began her campaign for senate.
She thought that having a fulfilling career would help take her mind off the disappointment that was her marriage. She thought her career would be enough. And for a time it was, until she met him. When she first laid eyes on him and heard him speak for the first time. She knew it, she felt it. He was the man she was meant to be with, the one she was supposed to spend the rest of her life with. He held that earth-shattering, life changing type of love she longed for, she craved. Yet their paths crossed at the most impossible time.
She was running for senate, and a republican at that. Republicans valued family that's just the way it was. So even though she didn't want too, she had to let him go. The day he walked out of her life was the hardest thing she ever had to go endure. Because she knew in that moment that she would never love another man again. He was it for her, he was her forever. But forever was gone too soon for her liking. She sighed, in the end it would all be worth it, at least she hoped it would.
She was brought out of her thoughts as the front door to her office opened. In walked her best friend and chief of staff Abby Whelan. She'd known Abby since her freshman year of college. They went to Princeton for undergrad and then Georgetown for law school together. They were more like sisters than best friends. Abby knew her better than she knew herself, she was her rock. Especially when the man she loved walked out of life. And for that she'd be forever grateful.
"Good morning Senator," said Abby cheerfully with a bright smile on her face. She was carrying a folder and a cup of coffee, that Olivia presumed was for her. Olivia plastered a smile on her face even though she was feeling anything but happiness at the moment and responded.
"Morning Abby." Olivia got up from her desk and stepped from around it.
She knew she had a meeting soon. Abby looked at Olivia and took in her appearance. Her boss/best friend looked very well put together on the outside. She wore a cream pants suit with a matching blazer, and a black blouse with five inch black pumps. Her hair was wavy, her make-up was flawless, she looked gorgeous. But knowing Liv for as long as she did, Abby could tell, she was falling apart. It'd been six months since she'd taken the oath and became a senator. Six months since she pledged to do right by the people of California that had selected her and put her in office. Six months since she'd gotten a good night's rest. And six months since she'd last seen him.
Abby thought that with time she'd eventually heal and get back to being her kick ass and take names self. But that day never came. There was only one other time she'd seen her best friend so broken other than the day he walked out of her life. And Abby never wanted her to experience that kind of pain again. But Liv made the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good. Abby had no doubt in her mind that Olivia could go all the way to the White House one day. And even though she despised that prick Edison Davis for putting everything else before his marriage. She knew that Olivia needed him to make it all the way to the top. Still she hoped best friend would recover from the man she loved, but it had been six months now. And Abby didn't know if she'd ever get Olivia back all the way. Still they pushed on.
"What's on the schedule for today?" asked Olivia as Abby handed her the coffee. Abby smiled at her again and then looked down at her phone for the agenda.
"Well, you have senate meeting at nine this morning." Olivia nodded and sipped her coffee as Abby continued. "You also have a meeting with Governor Moss today at 10:30," said Abby reading off her list. "You have a lunch date at noon with your husband." Abby almost snorted when she saw Olivia roll her eyes. "Another meeting in the senate at 3:30 this afternoon, where you're supposed to began presenting your bill. And then dinner with Senator Ross and her husband at six this evening," said Abby as she read down the list. Olivia nodded as she handed Abby back the almost full cup of coffee.
"Great, it's almost 8:45, I should head to the senate meeting now," said Olivia ready to began her day. Abby nodded. "What are your lunch plans?" asked Olivia as she grabbed her surface pro off of her desk for notes.
"I'm supposed to have lunch at the new sushi restaurant on K st with Stephen but we'll probably end up eating back at his office and sharing lunch with his co-workers," said Abby rolling her eyes jokingly. Her boyfriend Stephen loved his work and he treated his coworkers like siblings, they were like a little family there. "Plus you know how much Fi-," but didn't continue as she saw Olivia freeze to turn around. "Sorry," mumbled Abby when Olivia turned to face her. Olivia had a tight smile on her face.
"No Abby don't be sorry," she sighed. "Finish what you were saying," she urged.
"That's ok, hey do you have the rough draft for the bill, I want to look over it before your meeting this afternoon," said Abby eager to change the subject. Olivia nodded.
"Yeah sure, it's on my desk," said Olivia as she turned to get the paperwork off of her desk. She set the tablet down, but she was still distracted. After finding the documents she turned to hand them to Abby still dazed and as Abby went to grab them, Olivia dropped them on the floor before her hands could grasp them. "Shit!" she cursed. Abby waved it off.
"Don't worry Liv, I got it," she told her as she picked the papers up off the floor. Olivia shook her head.
"Sorry Abby," said Olivia as she looked down at her watch. "Fuck, it's 8:50, I have to get to this meeting," said Olivia as she started to rush out the door. Abby stopped her once she picked up all of the documents.
"Liv, your tablet," she said holding the tablet out to Olivia. Olivia smiled and shook her head.
"Thanks Abbs, I don't know what I'd do without you," said Olivia gratefully, before she walked out the door.
Abby smiled as the door to Olivia's office closed. But she knew Olivia couldn't go on like this much longer. She had to focus there was an important bill she had to introduce today and if her head wasn't clear there was no way it would make it out of the senate. Abby had a phone call to make, she thought as she pulled her phone out and scrolled to her contacts.
"Governor Reston, I assure you my firm can handle this, we don't have a reputation for being the best crisis management firm in the city for nothing sir," said Fitz smiling handsomely and turning on the charm. Governor Reston looked nervous but nodded.
Fitzgerald Thomas Grant the Third was a well known man in Washington D.C. He owned and operated along with his associates, a crisis management firm in D.C. called Fitzgerald Grant and Associates, or FGA for short. Over the years he and his associates built a reputation for having the best firm in the city for handling the scandals and hardships of Washington D.C.'s elite. Most of his clients were politicians some of of them were wealthy businessmen and women. While their careers may have been different, they all had one thing in common when they stepped into FGA. All of his clients came into his office on the worst day of their lives hoping that he and his associates could make their problems go away. And more often than not that was always possible for him. Today would be no different. He was the best at what he did and he had the best people working for him of that he was sure.
"So Governor Reston tell me again, what exactly do you want us to do about this? I have a plan to handle this situation, but I would like to know if there is a certain way you wanted me to handle this instead?" he asked as he and his associates looked at the Governor intently.
Right before Governor Reston could speak, Stephen got a phone call. He looked down at his phone. Normally he wouldn't take a call in the middle of a meeting with a client but it was his girlfriend Abby and she had been battling with the flu last week and he thought that maybe she was feeling sick again.
"Excuse me, I have to take this," he said excusing himself from their little meeting and stepping into his office. Once he had the door closed he answered the phone.
"Abby, what's up, are you feeling okay?" he asked.
"Yes I'm fine, you're so sweet for asking, but that isn't the reason why I called," she explained. Stephen sighed relieved, he loved Abby to pieces but she was a nightmare to take care of when she was sick.
"What's up?" he asked hoping that she would make this quick, he needed to get back to the meeting. She sighed before she began.
"Stephen, it's Liv." Stephen held the phone to his ear waiting for her to continue, when she didn't he spoke up.
"What's wrong with Liv?" he asked concerned. Olivia was a good friend to him as well. They weren't as close as she was with Abby, but he did think of her like a sister.
"She's not doing well Stephen, she's not eating, she's not focused, her head is not in it. She needs to see him," said Abby seriously. Stephen shook his head.
"No Abby."
"Stephen," she whined. "She needs…" but he cut her off.
"No Abby, he's finally starting to be in a good place now, but he's not healed all the way yet. I don't know if he ever will be,l but seeing her definitely won't help him. He's made too much progress Abby, he can't do it," said Stephen firmly.
"She's not sleeping Stephen," said Abby in a last ditch attempt to get him to cave.
"Abby I have to go," said Stephen anxious to end this conversation. If he even knew what they were talking about he'd be pissed.
"Stephen she's not sleeping." Abby repeated. Stephen sighed.
"Neither is he Abby," he said before disconnecting the call. Abby looked down at her phone angrily, if Stephen wouldn't help her she'd have to go another route. And she knew just who to go too.
Stephen stepped out of his office but it seemed like he missed everything. Fitz was handing out assignments.
"Quinn, you get intel on the kidnappers, I need names, birthdays, partners, social security numbers, everything," he said. Quinn nodded and left to go to her office.
"Alyssa, you take Marcus and go meet with any and everybody they've ever associated with. I want to know where they've been, what they did last. The last meal they had to eat. Everything," he told them. Alyssa and Marcus nodded as they headed for the elevator. Fitz turned to the Governor after they left and said.
"Governor I assure you, we will do everything we can to get your wife back safe and sound. Consider it handled." Governor Reston nodded solemnly. "Would you mind waiting in my office for me, I have to go over some things with my associate Stephen here," said Fitz smiling calmly at the Governor. Reston nodded again and headed to Fitz's office. Once the door was closed. Fitz turned to Stephen and said.
"What's up, is everything okay?"
"Yeah mate, that was just Abby," said Stephen sighing.
"Is she alright?" asked Fitz concerned.
Stephen was out all last week taking care of her. Fitz smiled as her remembered talking Stephen out of pulling his hair out from frustration. Abby had a bell she would ring when she needed anything around the house, and needless to say the bell was never silent.
"Yeah she's fine mate, thank God," joked Stephen. Fitz cracked a smile.
"Good," he said smiling still, he was about to walk back to his office when Stephen said.
"The conversation was actually about you," he admitted. Fitz turned to him.
"Me, what about me?" he asked curiously.
"Well about Olivia," said Stephen who winced once he saw Fitz's shoulders tense up.
"What about her?" asked Fitz softly.
"She's not doing well mate, Abby said she's not eating or sleeping, she's a mess," sighed Stephen.
"I'm sorry to hear that," said Fitz sincerely, before turning to walk to his office again.
"She wants to see you," blurted Stephen. Fitz stopped walking but didn't turn to face him.
"I can't," he mumbled so low, that Stephen almost didn't hear him.
"I know mate, I know," nodded Stephen understandingly. Fitz shook his head and continued to walk into his office after gathering himself.
A few hours later Fitz was in his office going over all the evidence his team had gathered. This was good information, but they needed more. He thought, he was about to call Stephen into his office when his phone buzzed.
"Lunch?" said the text from his old friend Senator Jacob Shaw.
Jacob and Fitz went back. He, Stephen and Fitz all went to Yale law together. And while Fitz was definitely closer to Stephen, Jacob was definitely a close friend as well, he hadn't seen him in a while due to work. Today he would be no different he thought.
"Can't today bro, I'm swamped at work." Fitz replied. A few seconds later a text came through again.
"Come on Fitz, we haven't hung out in like two months, surely you can spare forty five minutes to catch up with an old friend."
Fitz sighed. It was true, he hadn't seen Jacob since the last White House Correspondents Dinner and even then, they didn't really get to hang out. He did feel guilty. So against his better judgement he responded.
"What time?" Jacob responded back almost immediately.
"Does a late lunch work for you?" Fitz responded.
"Sure, what time were you thinking?"
"I have meetings all the way up until two, if you could meet me here at the capitol, that'd be awesome." Fitz responded without thinking.
"Sure, see you at two."
"See you then buddy." said Jacob.
Fitz arrived at the capitol at 1:55 pm. After getting through security check and receiving his visitor's badge he went to the main hall of the capitol where Jacob told him that he would meet him once he was done with his meetings. He waited in the main hall and checked his phone for updates from his team on the progress they were making with the Governor's wife. When he heard a voice that sounded nothing like Jacob's he almost dropped his phone.
"Hello Fitz," said Abby Whelan smiling gleefully. Fitz shook his head.
"Where's Jacob?" he asked already starting to feel himself getting angry.
"I asked Senator Shaw to get you here," said Abby.
"I can't believe this," he said angrily as he turned to walk back out the door he came.
"Wait, I know you want to see her," said Abby knowingly.
Fitz froze and hung his shoulders low feeling defeated. Of course he wanted to see her, he always wanted to see her, hold her, kiss her, and love her. But he knew he shouldn't, it would end all of the positive progress he'd made when he finally got the strength to walk away. Fitz turned back around and motioned for her to lead him. Abby smiled to herself as she lead Fitz to Olivia's office. Once there Fitz expected to see Olivia but she was nowhere in sight.
"She'll be back in a sec," said Abby as if she could read his thoughts. He glared at her as he leaned up against the window.
"I'm gonna kill Jacob," he hissed. Abby smiled.
"You should thank him," said Abby. Fitz glared daggers.
"And why in the hell would I do that. It took everything in me to leave her, to stop speaking to her, to watch her fall apart as I walked out, to try and stop loving her. Everything Abby. I shouldn't be here," he said angrily.
"Yet here, you are. And you're still just as broken as she is," claimed Abby.
"So what makes you think that seeing her again is going to change that?" he asked throwing up his hands. "If anything it's going to make the situation worse," he warned. Abby shrugged.
"Maybe, maybe not," said Abby in a nonchalant tone that pissed Fitz off even more.
"You know what…" started Fitz angrily but the rest of his words were stuck on his lips as the door to Olivia's office opened and in walked his nightmare and his dream come true. She was busy looking down at her phone when she entered, so she didn't see him at first.
"Abby do you have the revised copy of the bill, I want to read it over before the senate meeting this afternoon," said Olivia as she finally looked up.
Her breath caught in her throat as she gazed into those piercing icy blue eyes that she never thought she'd see again, he stared right back at her too afraid to move, too afraid that this moment between them was just a dream. Abby looked between the two of them, the tension was so thick you'd need a chainsaw to cut it. Olivia felt as if all the air was sucked out of the room and by the pained, but relieved look on his face. She knew that he felt it too. After a few more moments of silence, Abby spoke up.
"I'll just head to my office and grab you a copy of that bill. She told Olivia. Her words fell on deaf ears though, because Olivia hadn't even responded. Abby walked out the door and closed it. Olivia had no idea what to say to the man that had literally turned her world upside down and set her whole body on fire as if she was covered in gasoline and he had the match. So she said the first thing that came to her mind.
"Hi," she spoke so softly he was sure that he heard her. But he responded in kind, holding up his tough front.
"Hi." She looked at him with soft loving eyes, and he felt his resolve breaking. Fuck he knew this was a bad idea!
(A/N: Okay tell me what you think please. I promise more will be revealed about these characters soon. Up next Fitz and Olivia continue their conversation and things get a little heated. You'll learn more about his team and also meet the prick also known as Edison Davis. Till next time…)
