"The Mom Code"

Lorelai followed the "mom code" as much as she could, but when it came to Lane, she bent the rules.

She would never have ratted Lane out about the clothes, and the makeup, and the junk food she snuck on the side. Those things were essentials to any young girl, in Lorelai's head, and they weren't harming anybody. No harm, no foul.

She knew how she would have felt in Lane's shoes. Hell, she had been there. Her own mother had tried to control every aspect of her life, from her friends, to her food, to her future. She had felt suffocated, and desperate for a life away from the cold walls of her childhood home.

Mrs. Kim was a good mother, and Lorelai admired her a great deal, but she couldn't just stand by and watch Lane's spark go out, so she nurtured it. She encouraged Lane to be herself, to be different, to live.

She knew how it felt to be smothered by a controlling mother. She had managed to escape Emily's clutches, and now she would do what she could to be there for Lane.

Watching Lane and Rory together was sort of surreal for Lorelai. It was like watching two parts of herself interact- Lane as the girl she was when living with her parents, and Rory as the free spirit she was now. She felt protective of both of them, so she took Lane under her wing and promised to always be there.

If Lorelai could help Lane hold on to her individuality in any way, she would. She would break the "mom code" to do it. To Lorelai, not even the "mom code" was as important as that freedom.

Lane had found a kindred spirit in Lorelai, and Lorelai was determined to make a difference in Lane's world.
