A Poem for Poe Dameron

Poe Dameron receives a heartfelt poem from his best friend, Finn.

Author's Note: Happy National Poetry Month! And what could be better than a poem about Poe? This story takes place after the events of The Force Awakens. I hope you enjoy, and if you do, please favorite and review! Also, write some poetry yourself before April ends!

Poe Dameron entered his quarters after a stressful day. General Organa's intelligence agents had discovered that Kylo Ren, General Hux, and Captain Phasma had survived the Battle of Starkiller Base and had gone into hiding. The leaders of the Resistance were desperately trying to pinpoint their location, as it was likely that their whereabouts could lead to the hidden base of Supreme Leader Snoke. It felt strangely quiet without the gentle chirping of BB-8, who was still working with C-3PO.

He had promised to visit Finn as he recovered in the infirmary. He made improvements every day under Dr. Kalonia's watchful eye. However, he knew that his stress would not make for a very calming presence. With a twinge of guilt, he resolved to visit his friend tomorrow.

As Poe sat down at his desk to settle in and watch the HoloNet for a while, he noticed an envelope bearing Dr. Kalonia's letterhead. Picking it up gently, he read "To Poe, From Finn" scrawled in shaky Basic.

Turning the envelope over, he saw that Dr. Kalonia had written a short message in ink:

Dear Poe,

This week, my patients have been working on therapeutic poetry about things they love. Finn told me that you were his best friend, and that he wanted to write about you. He gave me permission to send you the poem that he wrote. I hope you enjoy it. Finn and I thank you for all of your support.

Regards,

Kalonia

Smiling to himself (and feeling even more guilty for not visiting,) Poe opened the envelope and began reading what Finn wrote.

"An Ode to My Best Friend," by Finn

That night that I first saw you was not good

I lost the only friend I'd ever known

And all was dark like Kylo in his hood

But otherwise, we never would have flown

I sprang you from your lonesome, captive cell

And you and I to Jakku soon did flee

Although our fighter crashed in desert hell

'Twas then that I did realize I was free

I thought you dead, and so did BB-8

And so we left the planet with good Rey

But when the Order captured us with hate

Your X-Wing squadron came and saved the day

I may have lost a friend on that dark night

But now, I have a brother in my fight

Poe smiled, laying the paper down on his desk. He knew that writing poetry was supposed to help Finn's recovery, but it felt as though all of the cares of his day had been stripped away.
