Lily smiled over the rim of her tea cup. She had found this was one of her favorite parts of staying at James house. It's not her boyfriend, he was with her every where. But listening to Mr. and Mrs. Potter's stories, they were so full of love. Whether they were stories of their time in Hogwarts or as James was growing up, they loved each other.
"James has always been spoiled hasn't he?" Lily replied after Mrs. Potter finished her story about James riding his first broom.
"Yes dear, a side affect of our money I'm afraid. We tried not to give him everything, we wanted him to have to work for what he wanted. His father and I tried to prove that, you know that despite our fortune, his father was quite the successful business man. We found that our boy wasn't afraid to work for what he got, he just prefered to obtain them through unusual means."
"Like what?" Lily questioned the older woman.
"He fell in love with you and maybe he didn't handle it the best way, but here you are sitting in my kitchen with an absolutely besmitten look on your face. He wanted to be seen as smart, and despite him being tied for first in his class, he chose instead to act the fool in class and show his knowledge through pranks and tom-foolery. And well, I think my favorite story is how he wanted a brother. You know that having him was a miracle in itself and there was no way we were going to be able to have another one. So he went out and found himself a brother. He brought me home a little boy who needed a family to love him and merlin I don't know what life would be without Sirius in our lives. Or without Remus and Peter either. He, as I'm sure you know, doesn't care about the rules. But my god he cares about people doesn't he?" Mrs. Potter smiled at the girl she knew would be her daughter soon enough.
"Yeah," Lily responded, taking another sip of her tea, "He really does."
Short and simple. I might use this idea in a long fic eventually, but in a lot of ways I think it works really well on it's own.
