Chapter 6
His Gut Feeling
"Stay where you are…" An unfamiliar voice demanded.
"Who are you? What do you want?" Matthew asked the unfamiliar person which he figured his the one who had been following him the whole time lurking in the shadows, the feeling that his gut had been right.
"Matt…" Karen said his name sensing how scared she is by the shaking tone of voice. Matthew took a step forward wanting to get to Karen so badly.
"I said don't move!" He reminds Matthew as he tightens his grip on Karen to make her squirm a little to let him know he still has the woman and he could hurt her at any moment "Or she will die"
"J-Just don't harm her…" Matthew asks the unknown man who holds Karen hostage as the unknown male smirks and lets out a devious chuckle as tension builds between the two. When suddenly Karen had been shoved aside causing her to fall to the ground hard when she had lost her footing, letting a gasp of pain when she landed on the ground.
"Karen!" Matthew called for her as he looked her way where she had fallen. He wanted to run to her side but the man who had shoved her aside got between them.
"Wait right there! We have some business to attend to!" the man said.
"Business…?" Matthew questioned in confusion as to how it is that they have any business together. When suddenly the unknown man had thrown a shuriken at him. Matthew dodges by stepping to the side and twisting his body sideways to fully make sure he has dodged the weapon but only to cut him slightly.
"MATT!" Karen shouted towards him worried about him.
"I wanted to see if the blind man had really given up the life he once walked the path so full of pride…" The unknown man said, wondering how he knows who he is in both of his life.
"So you're just here to test me...whether I've given up my second life" but all Matthew got in response was a chuckle then it became a laugh.
"No...It is only just the beginning" He said as the fight had begun with the unknown man launching himself towards Matthew, coming in with his fist. Matthew hears the man's heartbeat. With Matthew's heightened senses comes very handy. Dodging the man's attacks but the man is still skillful that he managed to land hits on Matthew's body.
Soon they broke from their intense fight to give the man a chance to change his strategy by hiding his heartbeats, slowing the beat of his heart which caused Matthew to be wary as it brought memories from the past as he can only recall one organization who can have such high skills to do that and that was.
"The Hand…" he mumbled to himself until suddenly he found himself getting hit by the unknown man as his hits were landed. Matthew tries to maneuver around the man and try to land his own hits but only getting so much while Matthew gets his hits constantly only to cause him to fall to the ground when the man has landed a heavy hit to his face.
"MATT!" Karen called out to him as she forced herself off the ground and ran to his side as she knelt down beside him with her hand resting against his back comforting him.
"K-Karen…" Matthew said in a worried tone of voice as he tries to take a breather but when he feels Karen's warmth coming from her hand against his back, it's a comforting feeling knowing despite everything that is happening she's always worried about him.
"How lovely…." The unknown man had said with a smirk on his face and a devious yet disgusted with a scoff to see the sight of the two.
"Why...Why are you doing this!?" Karen begged for an answer as to why would this person attack Matthew. Wanting an answer like a reporter she had become.
"Karen...I'm fine"
"No...Your not" Karen tells Matthew as she tries to remind him that he's still only human and not this other person he masked himself for so long as the DareDevil "You're still human...You aren't invincible Matthew " Matthew only smiled towards her as he feels thankful for Karen's kindness and loving nature. Matthew then turned his attention back to the fight with the unknown man.
"You're from The Hand…" Matthew pointed out as he slowly stood up from the ground while Karen tried to hold him down but Matthew looked down towards her as he smiled gently and gave that 'Trust me' aura before she finally let go of him.
Matthew looks back to the man waiting for his response while as there is but silence in the room the thoughts of the past come flooding in that angers him how they are still around, where her death was in vain. He had thought that he had taken them down after killing the leader of the organization...Nobu and who was the ones that killed the woman he had thought to ever love and who was the only one that knows him...the one who he lets into his heart
"The very people that took her away…Because of you all...she's now gone" he said in anger and annoyance as if he has forgotten what his words could affect the woman he's been trying to move on with his life with.
Matthew's hands tightened into a fist, his adrenalin spiked up when the man had started laughing which caused Matthew to charge towards him throwing punches at the man only to have missed and get kneed to the abdomen but Matthew blocked the knee with his elbow and followed up with a punch which it landed against the man's chest caused the man to back away. It not that Matthew is getting defeated but having to refocus himself again and reteach himself after having to drop everything since the death of Elektra which this is a good opportunity even though he told himself he wasn't going to get involved but when it comes to needing to protect the person he cares for...the people he has left in his life.
When the man had taken a breath, that was the chance Matthew needed to turn the tables. The man tried to launch hits but Matthew took the upper hand having to dodge them and then landed pretty good heavy hits with combos of punches and kicks causing the man to gasp for air and cough which continues to give Matthew the advantage he needed to end this fight. Eventually, the man had fallen to the ground and spit out blood then wiped the corner of his lips. The man started laughing when he looked towards the window as if he knew something was going to happen but was confused as to why the man was laughing. But Matthew had to end this fight but what the man had said next caught him off guard.
"She was right about you…" Matthew's heart skipped a beat as he froze on the spot wondering who does he mean by 'she'.
"She...Who do you mean by she?" But all that Matthew got was him continuing to laugh which caused Matthew to approach the man, grabbed him by the collar pulling him closer towards him as their face was a couple of inches apart before lifting him up to his feet and pinned him to the window "Who are you talking about? Who is the leader of The Hand now? Is Nobu still alive!?" Matthew demanded him to answer him "Answer me!"
The man groaned some before he had chuckled some and answered.
"You may have taken the moon away from the night but you...can never take away the Dark Sky" That was the last thing the man from The Hand had said when silence befalls on the man when suddenly something shot through the window, only to hear the man started coughing and choking as if he's choking on his own blood.
"No no no...Who is this person your…" Matthew didn't get to ask when he felt the dead weight as the body of the man dropped to the ground which Matthew followed the body as he was still having to have a hold of it when the body dropped to the ground. Matthew knelt beside the body as he tried to sense if the man was still breathing but he could not hear anything. So Matthew checked the cause of the death and he felt an arrow embedded in the man's neck "Wh-Who…?" Matthew questioned to himself as he looked from the body towards the window where the shot would have come from. Matthew tried to sense if anyone else was out there that could still be watching and waiting but he couldn't sense anyone which made him wonder if they are also like this man is hiding heartbeat and yet he doesn't understand as to why he thinks it could be 'her' unless the words the man had spoke of is getting to him, it was making him feel uneasy.
Soon her then felt a hand against his chest which he snapped out of it sensing it's only Karen, again her touch tends to sooth Matthew which is what he needs right about now.
"Matthew...you alright?" Karen asked in concern for him. Matthew stares at her in silence, clenching his jaws together before grabbing her by the arms and pulling her into an embrace, holding her tightly against him.
"I'm..Fine" he could muster up in saying at first before he slowly pulled himself away from her and looked at her in concern for the whole incident that had just happened "What about you are you alright?"
"Yeah...I'm fine, Not cuts or bruises" Karen responded with, trying to be strong for the both of them after what just had happened even though they do have a dead body in the apartment. Matthew nodded in relief of Karen's alright and not completely hurt in any way he could have imagined her being hurt, especially when dealing with The Hand.
"What did he mean by what he said…?" Karen asked, becoming curious about the whole situation again like a reporter. Matthew let out a sigh as he shook his head and released her not wanting to involve her with The Hand.
"You should...go home" Matthew told Karen as it's the only way he could think to keep her safe if she wasn't around him right now. Matthew could sense her reluctant to leave his side "I will be fine… I promise" He tries to reassure her uneasy heart as he can hear the rhythm of her heart beats. "I will get you a cab" He said as he got up off the ground and helped her up to her feet. Waited for her to grab her stuff before leading her to the door and down to the front of the apartment building.
They made their way into the street as he approached the sidewalk and heard a cab eventually make its way over as he waved for a cab. When the cab stopped in front of them, Matthew grabbed the door handle, opened the door and waited for Karen to get in. Karen walked over towards both Matthew and the cab that she will be taking to head home. She was about to get in but she paused as she stood there. Matthew sensed her not getting inside the cab as he had a confused expression on, wondering why she's not getting inside to go home. Karen looked at Matthew as she stared at him for a couple of moments before she spoke.
"You will call me later right?" she asked worriedly.
"I will '' Matthew answered.
"What about the...you know?" Karen asked about the body that was still laying on the floor in his apartment bleeding out.
"Don't worry...I will find a way" he said in response, even though that was a lie.
Karen smiled before she leaned in towards him and planted a goodnight kiss.
Matthew smiled as he then sensed Karen get inside the cab.
"Goodnight" Karen said
"Goodnight" Matthew responded the same before shutting the door when she got inside and they said their goodnights.
Matthew watched as the cab drove off taking Karen home. Matthew sighed and groaned as he tilted his head trying to think but the only person he could think of is the one person he didn't think he would ever need to call for his help.
