To say Nola 'ran' into Bellamy Blake wasn't the truth per say. He was around the corner pacing on the spot while a heated conversation was going on between Clarke Griffin and her mother.
"What? No. You can't just cut them loose." The young blonde stated, her voice echoing down the corridor to the corner where Nola was leaning.
"Sweetheart we don't have the manpower to send out two separate rescue missions and still protect our camp" the tiredness of Abby's voice clear
"But mum, they're in trouble. They're either gonna get killed or make things worse with the grounders who we need to get our people out of mount weather-"
"I know you feel this is unfair but our priority has to be with Chancellor Kane if there is any hope for peace."
"If you wanted peace, you shouldn't have killed the only Grounder that was going to help us!"
"I'm Sorry." Abby responded, "The decision's been made."
Fed up with the constant pacing, Bellamy's voice echoed in the area, causing Nola to shoot back behind her corner, leaning as flat into it as she could, assuming she had been seen but that wasn't the case.
"You're sorry?" he stated, "Finn and Murphy are out there looking for you daughter with guns you gave us. And now she's home, you're just going to abandon them? Like they mean nothing? If you can't spare the guard, we know the terrain. We have a map. We can do it ourselves-"
"No absolutely not." The chancellor objected, her daughter protesting as a result "I just got you back."
Suddenly loud footsteps jogged down the corridor, glancing at Nola as she quickly tried to open a book and look busy and not eavesdropping, but it was only Jackson who gave her a quick glance, clearly busy with something urgent as he rounded the corner, heading for the doctor. "Abby. I'm sorry. We need you in medical."
"You better go." Clarke murmured, unsurprised by the convenient intrusion.
As the doctor nodded she turned to head towards medical, pausing momentarily "Byrne. No one leaves this camp."
"Yes ma'am." The soldier responded dutifully.
Suddenly many people were starting to disperse, thinking it almost safe to go Nola peered around the corner, noting that only Bellamy and Clarke remained, low voices, mumbling to one another, something about needing guns.
As the two left in the opposite direction to Nola, she realised that she may have one of the only secret passages of the camp. Realising that this may be the only opportunity she has she spun around to go back to her room and pack a bag, filling it with food packs, a torch, a notebook, the bags to preserve her findings and her trusty knife. Tying up her hair to keep it out of the way she changed into fresher clothes that were more suited to adventures and cold weather. She had since replaced the borrowed jacket and now donned a better fitting dark jacket, black jeans that were well worn and her boots, making sure to pack a spare set of socks, just in case she took a dip in the water again.
With her pack all set to go she meandered as subtly as she could to her secret vent, opening it up and stashing her pack in there, making sure to quietly secure it again so not one would notice anything out of place and made her way to wherever Raven might be, she would know what's going on.
Heading to the experiment room as Nola would call it, she only saw Wick working away at a computer screen, a face of focus as he typed up some scripts as the screen moved very quickly, too fast to even read what language it was in.
"Do you know where Raven is?" she asked, trying not to surprise him, though that didn't work at all since he was so focused he physically jumped in his seat and spun around to try and cover his screen as best he could, suspiciously trying to hide what he was up to.
"Uh, hey, yeah no, I dunno, maybe she's with Abby at medical or having a nap, try there?" he stuttered.
"Lets be honest here, if I were to ask anyone in the camp where she was, you would always know, you two are two mad scientists joined at the hip, and you're really bad at lying, so I'm going to try this again." Nola stated, feeling a little sorry for the poor bugger who was really badly trying to cover up where his friend was, poor guy, the crush he had on her wasn't helping the bright red cheeks he had either. "Okay, is she with the others from the 100?"
Sure enough, Wick couldn't make eye contact, bingo.
"Okay, and if I were to make a fair assumption, you were trying to turn off the electric boundary, correct? It makes sense, I mean, they can't just walk out through the front gate anymore, it's the only way to escape." A hint of a smirk showing itself on her face at his shocked expression, giving away everything she guess to be right.
"You're here in place of Abby aren't you?" he finally asked.
"No, I'm here for me. I want in." she said, a glint of mischief in her eyes.
"Scored you a couple of extra clips." Raven said as Bellamy and Clarke arrived at a hidden point in the fence line.
"Hey thanks. My Mum's in surgery, and the team going after Kane just left. We should too." Clarke said as she rounded the corner, dropping her bag at their feet.
"Did you find Octavia?"
"No. I found you." the young huntress stated, stepping in front of her older brother "I'm not letting you leave her without me"
"Octavia-"
"Finn and murphy are headed for Lincoln's village. I've been there. Have any of you? Have you? Has she?" she said, a proud look in her older brothers eyes as he realised how much she's grown since they landed on earth.
"You done?" Bellamy said, a smirk on his face as he handed her a bag.
"What's this?"
"Your pack. Lead the way." The older brother said as his sister walked over to the fence to climb under.
"Whoa. Not so fast, Pocahontas. This thing is still live." Raven said, testing her walking stick on one of the wires as a bright spark got set off.
"I thought you said this was handled." Clarke assumed as she put a magazine in her pack and zipped it shut.
"It is." The mechanic stated as she picked up a radio and spoke into it "Shut her down, Wick."
Waiting, waiting, waiting, no response.
"Wick, you there?"
"Sorry Raven, I can't get it, the guards are coming this way, I don't have enough time, you'll need to find another way out. Good luck." He said over the radio.
"You're kidding me. How are we going to do that?" Bellamy hissed, rubbing his face in frustration.
"Maybe I can help with that."
Hearing the last of the conversation, knowing Nola had arrived just in time before the group left. She internally thanks Wick for giving her the chance she needed to be able to come along, true enough, he would have had enough time had Nola not interrupted him, she dashed out of his workshop just in time before the guards came in to ask where Raven was, Wicks giving them the same response he did to Nola only less startled and better rehearsed.
"You're kidding me. How are we going to do that?" Bellamy hissed, rubbing his face in frustration at Wick's response.
Knowing it was as good a time as any, Nola braced her self for a lot of awkwardness and stepped into their line of sight. "Maybe I can help with that." She said, trying to hide her embarrassment and the look Bellamy was giving her, shock then annoyance, it may have been Nola's imagination but it seemed as though there wasn't fury in there at this point in time, must've found him on a good day perhaps she thought to her self.
"How did you know we were here, did my mother put you up to this?"
"No, Clarke, Abby and I are friends but this goes beyond that. I know another way to get out of here. I'll take you there, but I want to come with you all."
Disbelief was an understatement as the four young people all stared back at her, not really processing what she had said.
The Gardener wants to go and find Finn and Murphy, with other people, not alone. What was the world coming to Bellamy thought as he stared at her, not quite able to see what was different about the gardener in front of him. She looked the same, apart from a few healing scratches that may scar, her skin had more colour to it from the sun, her hair was slightly dirty, she didn't look any taller, sure she wasn't in a lab coat but that wasn't what was different but he couldn't put his finger on it. Who knows Bellamy thought while trying not to think about it as he stood there silently, knowing that whatever he had to say wasn't going to be good, or mature.
"Nola, you'll probably die" Raven piped up, knowing that the others weren't quite sure how to respond, particularly Bellamy who had many mixed emotions on his face.
"I've survived out there before, and I've been out of the compound already, I have a rough idea of where a few things are around here, I wont be completely useless, just don't judge me if I grab a few plants as we look for your friends." She said, a light powder of pink coating her cheeks.
"Of course. Its all for the plants." The only male in the group mumbled, getting a few side looks from the girls.
After getting no where for a while Octavia grew impatient "Okay, where is the other exit?"
A vent, of course it is, it's always vents with you McCarthy. The older male thought to himself as they group came to the end of a passage way and saw the gardener pulling open a grill to a vent and grabbing out a backpack, slinging it over her shoulders and securing it with straps
"You always have a pack stashed?" the younger Blake sister questioned
"Only recently when I discovered this passage." she mumbled as she held the vent open as the others climbed in leaving her as the last to make sure the vent is secure.
Octavia lead the way followed by Bellamy and then Clarke with Nola at the rear, directing the young girl on which turns to make and when and what hazards to duck or climb over.
It was warm, stuffy and cramped as Bellamy crawled through the ventilation shafts, still unable to believe that the gardener was helping them to escape, as it was the last thing he had expected.
"Watch your shins when you push the grate open with your feet" she said as
Octavia reached the vent filtering the outside light onto the group. Shining light on each of their faces. Bellamy looked behind to check on Clarke as she had been unusually quiet but she seemed to be lost in her own thoughts. Just as he went to turn back around he made direct eye contact with Nola McCarthy, and for a split second he realised what was different. The look in her eyes had changed, the shield wasn't there, it was like she actually had emotions and wasn't sitting on a throne above everyone else. Nola was making direct eye contact with him for that split second before something behind him caught her attention, Bellamy broke his own stare and -
Bang
Without looking where he was going Bellamy hit his head on an overhead pipe, clean on the forehead swearing rather loudly as he groaned and rubbed his head. A snort coming from Octavia as she pushed the grate open and dropped to the earth below, her fearlessness showing as she dropped without hesitation.
After a hard landing on the ground from Bellamy, Clarke took her time to carefully climb out of the vent, her body reminding her that she was still injured and stiff. As she went to climb out Nola held the vent open for her, a calm look on her face as she looked through the slits to the outside and silently following when it was safe to do so.
Once the group were all on the ground and ready to go Octavia took the lead, silently jogging in the open field in a hurry to get to the tree line before getting spotted from the patrols. Nola followed as quiet as she could, observing the young Blake sister and realising the similarities between the Blake siblings, same hair, same eye colour, but Octavia didn't have any freckled like Bellamy did which must've been due to not having gone outside of her home ever.
The group ventured further into the woods and only stopped later in the night when the moon was all the way up in the sky and they were certain patrols, grounders or mountain men weren't following them. As they set up what could barely be called a camp the others started getting ready for bed, at least one person staying up at a time as a look out.
Most of the night had mostly passed and the moon was low, the sun would rise soon. The four surrounded a small fire in the center of the circle of beds, Octavia was still asleep and Nola had only just woken up at the sound of a rustling nearby, her back was facing the fire as she looked out to the woods, listening and watching for anything that could pique her interest.
"Last time I saw you, you were closing the drop-ship door."
Jumping in her skin ever so slightly, Nola initially thought Bellamy was talking to her. Thankfully that wasn't the case as another body stirred in response.
"Had to be done." he continued.
"Did you get any sleep?" The voice belonging to Clarke mumbled as she sat up, her jacket rustling ever more as she shuffles around to get comfortable.
"It's okay, I'll sleep when we find Finn. You haven't seen him, Clarke. Losing you, the others, the war, it's changed him. He executed the grounder that drew us the map. Pulled the trigger without even blinking and walked away."
"Th- that doesn't sound like Finn." The female stammered
"No. It doesn't. I saw what he was capable of and still, I let him go with murphy and two automatic rifles."
"I'm sure that had to be done too…"
"When we got back to the drop-ship and no one was there we assumed it was the grounders-"
"Of course you did. You couldn't have known it was the mountain men. No one could have."
The silence between the two was almost deafening, Nola thought it was almost time to reshuffle and get comfy or get up but she lay still for a moment longer.
"How long until chocolate cake turns into being hung upside down and drained for their blood?"
"I don't know. But we don't have much time." The blonde responded
"Okay. First we find Finn, then our people in Mount Weather."
"And Lincoln." Octavia Piped up, Nola having not notices the warrior-looking sister was awake at all. "I think we've slept enough." She said, making enough noise for Nola to know it was time to go again.
Gaining a light kick to the foot Nola jumped up only to see it was Octavia giving her a knowing look in her eyes that she knew Nola wasn't asleep and that it was time to head off again.
The group packed up, put out the fire and kept going, Nola making sure to grab some of the nearby plants into her bag before leaving to catch up with the others.
A few hours had passed since the group left the campsite, the sun was up and the landscape had changed from rural plains to spaced out pine trees. Octavia had picked up pace in the last half hour and the group were now in a light jog, Octavia having noticed where we were going and making haste to get to wherever the boys must be.
After weaving down into a little valley the group slowed down, Nola grateful for the break to catch her breath.
"This is it" Bellamy murmured as he read over a sheet of paper. "which way to the village?"
A brief moment passed an Nola realised that Octavia was in another world, her brother looking slightly concerned.
"O?"
"The reapers came from there…" her voice wavering as her fierce façade fell away as she broke down into her brother's chest "I couldn't save him, Bell." She sobbed, Clarke and Nola watching from behind the siblings as she tried to look away from the siblings, feeling as though she didn't deserve to be near them in this moment but trying to focus on other things around her as she patiently waited for the two to have their space, a compassionate side of Bellamy that Nola had long since forgotten.
After a little while Octavia was back on the track, only this time Bellamy and Clarke were leading the way, Bellamy occasionally looking back at his sister, making sure not to even acknowledge the gardener in any way possible.
As he looked over to check on Clarke and make sure she was still holding up alright some gunshots went off in the distance, in the direction of the village. The group went from a light jog to almost sprinting for the village, hoping that they were too late for whatever is unfolding.
As Nola sprinted as fast as she could the gunshots increased, her heart was pounding so hard by the time she neared the village, the screams of the villagers turning into loud sobbing and weeping.
It was carnage.
Most of the villagers were dead on the ground, some stirred in pain but most were dead. Where most of them hesitated, Octavia ran straight over to an older man clutching a young boy she must've recognised.
As Nola looked around her she realised that in the calamity of the mess she had lost Clarke and Bellamy but didn't make any effort to chase after them. There was too much happening to even think of that, too many people were hurting, too many people had died it felt just like an old memory of the burst pipes at the Farm Station, the day her mother got injured, unable to heal again.
It felt so similar, people were huddled over bodies, and children were crying over their parents. One child was sobbing over the body of its mother who was choking on her own blood, no one there to even help.
Without even thinking she carefully made her way to the child and mother and knelt down beside the child, he would have only been around five years old and was crying into his mothers chest. The woman was crying and coughing as she made eye contact with Nola as she approached them, unsure of what she was doing and why.
As she knelt down the little boy looked up at her, his eyes very red and puffy, his nose very snotty and some of his mothers blood smeared on his face. He tried to lie over her body to protect her from Nola, realising this she patiently knelt there slowly resting her hand on the woman, available to grasp if she wanted, at first the child pushed her hand away, but the second time the mother grasped Nola's hand, possibly not realising that she wasn't a fellow tribe member. The mother had a glazed look in her eyes and her breaths were getting inconsistent and raspy.
Slowly the woman passed on to the afterlife, leaving the young boy and Nola lost to their senses. The boy sobbed even louder, almost hysterically, and Nola found herself breathing quick and shallow, the whole situation hitting too close to home, feeling very deeply and similarly to what the boy was going through, just like she had once when she lost her mother.
Suddenly feeling too many emotions all at once, Nola got up and left the boy to mourn his mother. Thankfully another young woman, a tanned brunette with a neck tattoo had come over to comfort the boy, talking in the native tongue to calm him down, making brief eye contact and nodding at Nola as she started to walk away and towards the edge of the village in the direction that the group had come.
Climbing up the bank she made her way behind a tree and knelt down and wrapped her arms around herself as she let some tears escape, trying her best to calm her breathing and settle herself as best she could.
Bellamy, Octavia, Clarke, Finn, Murphy and Nola left the Village shortly after, Octavia was giving Finn questionable looks that shifted between wanting to kill him, or put him in a psych ward both seemed to include knocking him out. Bellamy kept glancing between Clarke and Finn as the hours passed and Murphy was quiet at the beginning but began to talk intermittently, one sarcastic remark after the next.
Nola on the other hand was silent. She looked straight ahead and didn't say a word, the others had noticed her grabbing little plants here and there and constantly observing things around her in the beginning of the search, but right now? There was a glazed look in her eyes, as though she was looking but not really seeing where she was going. Clarke had seen her around the Ark a few times, mainly when she was having tea with her mother, more often after Nola's own mother had died, but she hadn't seen of the emotionless rumour in action until today, but something seemed off, as though her mind was somewhere else which is what had spiked the train of thought inn the first place.
Slowing down her pace she decided that it'd be nice to not have Bellamy's constant glances between her and Finn, however awkward that already was. Instead she decided to try and strike up a conversation with the Gardener.
"Hey. How's the research going?"
A little confused at the unusual conversation Nola looked speechlessly at Clarke, but the heavily bruised and sewn up girl just looked back, waiting for a response, mindful to ignore the glances of the others.
"Uh yeah, its okay, it's been slow, but things are coming along, we have herbs that grow locally and I think there's some healing seaweed in the lake nearby, not that I'd care to take another swim any time soon."
"Hmm yeah I wouldn't want to either" Octavia piped up "too many creatures living in there for my liking"
"Agreed, its not a nice feeling" Nola blushed, avoiding the curious gazes of the other members of the group.
Curiosity had gotten the better of Murphy once again as he loudly piped up and shouldered the gardener, causing her to stumble slightly in her tracks "Were you studying the plant life while taking a dip were you Miss Gardener?" he smirked, trying to lighten the mood,
"Uh no, not this time, I'd actually gotten separated from the patrol when we were ambushed and got lost finding my way back"
"Is that why you looked all messed up?"
"uh yeah, kinda, that and getting shot by one of the guardsmen, that was a pain"
As soon as Nola had spoken she realised she had said too much, the group had stopped and were all staring at her, Bellamy included. The stares were too embarrassing and Nola could feel the heat rising in her cheeks and the cool air wasn't enough of an excuse.
"You got shot?" Clarke piped up "By who?"
"Oh, um, I don't know, it was an accident, I mean, they thought I was a grounder, similar to when you arrived at the front gate as well, honest mistake I guess" she murmured, deciding to leave the grounder ambush on the men that came to see who they had shot.
Deciding that that was enough talk about Nola she tried to change the subject, "So… what was it like when you all first came down here?"
"Freedom, Bliss, No rules, we could do whatever we wanted, until we realised we weren't alone I guess." Murphy gushed, clearly missing the brief freedom they had, however short.
"Yeah, it was great until the grounders started killing our people." Bellamy mumbled
"How did they die?" she asked, curiosity getting the better of her.
"Lets see.." murphy thought as he mentally processed all the people that died and how they were killed "One guy had an axe to the skull, others stepped on booby traps and snares, others were shot with arrows and one guy was stabbed with a spear, but he was an jerk and he didn't get along with many people."
And the mention of the last guy Nola looked straight at Bellamy, wondering if it was Toby, her bully who was sent to the skybox after nearly beating her to death.
As if right on cue, Bellamy looked back at her, her eyes hinting at something he wasn't aware she knew of. Steeling himself he looked back ahead, trying not to listen to much and hope that people will just stop talking so they can get back to Camp Jaha faster.
True enough, the conversations stopped shortly after when Octavia heard a rustle in the trees. At first everyone was on high alert, assuming that they were getting surrounded, however it turned out to be a flock of birds that got frightened. From that the group made the decision to jog the rest of the way back to the campsite.
"Noelene McCarthy. What were you even thinking? Do you even realise what the consequences would be if you had died, or if any of the kids had died? Not only would the parents be furious with me but we would have lost our only surviving botanist, that was a ridiculous thing to do and I'm so angry and disappointed with you. if you ever do that again I'm stripping you of your title and you will no longer be our head botanist."
The chancellor was a little mad. Who would have thought, Nola was expecting it but she wasn't expecting her job to be threatened, who would even replace her, no one even knew if the others were alive to begin with.
The group decided to keep the passage a secret in case of emergency and decided to enter back through the main gates, knowing that it was the best course of action, rather than sneaking back into camp, knowing that everyone knew they were gone.
Almost immediately the group was separated by the guardsmen, Clarke was taken to her mother in the medical ward, Octavia was put in a cell with Bellamy and Finn and murphy were put in a separate cell, and Nola was locked in the operations room, waiting for the chancellor to return. And boy oh boy did she bring her wrath upon Nola. Abigail Griffin was a force to be reckoned with.
The group was confined to their rooms for 24 hours and unable to talk to one another. Clarke was in her mother's room, Nola was in her own and the boys were all moved to a share room and Octavia to her own.
Although those hours must've been painful for the others, Nola had all the time she needed to update her research and record her findings. Going over the plants and twigs she'd collected was killing time much more productively for her.
Hours passed and she was well into her 18 hours of house arrest, finding herself rather tired from her research and the whole ordeal of the search and village, Nola decided it was time to sleep. And so she slept, a deep dreamless sleep for many hours, not waking up until it was two days later and well into the night.
Hey all, here's another chapter, so soon haha, so good, hope you like, it.
Things are slowly going to speed up and get more interesting.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Bellamy / Nola interactions. I know that if someone really hated someone they would initially flip their sh#t (mind the language), and that's what I almost had in mind but I realise that Bellamy and Nola have both been growing up and they realise what's appropriate and what's not, especially in front of friends, and don't worry, the water between them wont be this calm for long.
Enjoy amigo's xx KP
