Future Shock: The Cat with Blue Eyes
Chapter 9: Past and Future Collide
Evening Prior…
Chloe was exhausted after shopping with Sabrina all day after school. The two girls had spent hours walking into all of Chloe's favorite luxury shops while Chloe purchased everything she wanted to while Sabrina of course carried all of Chloe's things. Heading up to her room she opened the door ready to take a shower, ignore her homework, and go right to bed. However, it was not an empty dark room she walked into as her lights were already on and there was an older woman in her bedroom. "What the heck?" Chloe thought, perplexed.
"Umm, who are you and what are you doing in my room?" Chloe tossed her designer purse into the chair on the corner as soon as she spotted a woman sitting on her favorite lounger. Cocking her hip out to the side she placed her hand on it with attitude and lifted an eyebrow. The bag of her new purchases swung from her arm. The woman just laughed at the response so Chloe tried again, visibly annoyed.
"Uh, excuse me! Who are you and how did you get in here?!"
The woman smirked at the entrance of the younger girl and stood up with her arms wide open looking hurt, "Oh my, I can't believe you don't recognize me!" The woman completely ignored Chloe's annoyed greeting and continued to smile like the Cheshire cat.
Chloe pursed her lips and took off her sunglasses that blocked her sight and placed them on top of her head. She noticed that the woman looked almost exactly like herself but was much older. Maybe this was some distant cousin that she had met a long time ago but the woman wasn't important enough to remember.
Chloe blinked, unmoved. "No, I don't know you. What are you doing in my bedroom?!" The teen started to tap her foot getting faster and faster impatient for an answer. The pounding of her toes on the floor the only audible sound.
The blonde-haired woman imitated Chloe's current posture and stared her directly in the eyes, "My dear Chloe, I have every right to be here. You see…I am you…from the future."
There was a pause as the younger Chloe blankly stared at her older self.
Older Chloe flipped her long ponytail, "Can't you tell how awesome I am? How you will become when you grow up?"
Chloe burst into a fit of cackling laughter and leaned onto the wall for support. She laughed so hard that tears poured from her eyes making her vision so blurry she couldn't see anything other than blobs of colors. "You expect me to believe you? That is the utterly most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!"
The older Chloe's head throbbed in annoyance, "Are you done now? Did you get that out of your system?"
"Okay, so if I'm so cool as you say. Why are you…I mean me… here? How are you here? How is that possible?!"
The older Chloe smiled wickedly, "I'm here to make your, our, dreams come true. You see dear Chloe," Future Chloe picked herself up off of her lounged position and strut around her younger self. "Something happened in your time that did not agree with our plans of happiness. Mainly regarding Adrien Agreste."
"Adrikins?"
"Yes, you see Chloe, you don't end up with Adrien-" Older Chloe was cut off by her younger self.
"Ridiculous! Absolutely Ridiculous! I don't believe it! Adrien is mine and there is absolutely no use in convincing me otherwise." The younger teen crossed her arms and huffed. She turned her face away from her older counterpart and stuck her nose up in the air.
"Chloe, you don't end up with anyone. I'm still single. We're still single." Older Chloe's eye twitched at what had just come from her mouth. Hearing it out loud was so pathetic. She was in her thirties and still lacked a significant other.
Younger Chloe's jaw dropped so fast at the comment. She breathed in a big gulp of air before expelling it, "WHAT?!"
The woman clenched her teeth together and hissed in annoyance,
"Well, believe it Chloe. Because you lose Adrien to your classmate" Chloe wanted to barf at having to say her name "to…Marinette."
"RIDICULOUS! Marinette Dupain-Cheng?!"
Older Chloe snickered, "That's right." Just thinking about the bluenette boiled Chloe's blood through her veins. "Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste are married in the future. The both of them are ridiculously famous and successful together." Her nose twitched just thinking about it. Seeing Marinette and Adrien on an ad everywhere she turns day after day. Hearing their voices on the television. It was too much.
"That's absurd! Completely ridiculous. How did the two of them end up together?" Younger Chloe cried, biting one of her nails between her teeth with nervousness. It didn't make sense to the blonde. It was obvious that Marinette had a big disgusting crush on Adrien. Everyone in the world except Adrien knew that. Adrien as far as she knew never paid special attention to Marinette nor showed any interest in her.
"How did this happen?"
The taller woman shrugged with honesty, "I don't know. One day they just became a couple and then got married after graduating high school. It happened so fast and they have been glued together ever since."
"Is he happy?" Chloe asked quietly after musing over the information within the confines of her mind. Her inner self went into battle mode like an invisible angel and devil on her shoulders. Maybe if he was happy that was all that mattered? But then why wouldn't Adrien be happy with her? She could give him everything he could ever want and more.
"That doesn't matter!" Older Chloe snapped. She sighed and placed her hands on either side of Chloe's shoulders to look at herself in the eyes. The hopeless gaze struck right into younger Chloe's soul, "He will be happier with us. I have to fix this."
"Okay, so what do you want me to do about it?" Chloe felt such a strong connection. The need in her future self's voice was audibly desperate. If this was her future…shouldn't she go along with it? It was to benefit her after all anyway.
The blonde woman straightened up immediately to reach into her hair. "I'm so glad you asked." Pulling out a black hair comb she handed it to her past self. Chloe grasped the hair comb in her hands noticing it had large prongs decorated with a bumblebee design. "What is this?" She examined the hair decoration turning it around for a full look.
As she asked the question, her future self calmly picked up the comb right out of her hands and placed it lovingly into her younger self's hair. Parting the blonde tresses to perfection she released a breath and sweetly smiled at her work,
"Just follow my instructions."
Younger Chloe's eyes dusted over in the same cloudy haze as appearing in her older version's own eyes as a new power took over her body.
The young blonde teenager's aura darkened, "Leave it to me."
The Next Morning...
Stating that Marinette had a restless sleep the night before would be an understatement. The teen was so worried about her kitty that she could not even close her tired eyes. The entire night she lay awake staring at the ceiling reliving the events that had transpired and Plagg's words ran repeatedly in her mind like a record. It was the most dizzying feeling that she had ever experienced. She even tried calling Adrien's phone so many times without any luck. Marinette, also against everyone's wishes, transformed into Ladybug to swing by Adrien's bedroom window. He was not there and that was no surprise to anyone involved. Why would he be left in plain sight?
"Mama, you need to take a deep breath." Louis tried coaching the teenage version of his mother as he walked alongside her to school. Louis and Naomi had transformed into Ladybug and Chat Noir that morning to easily sneak out of Marinette's room from her balcony. It was a miracle at this point that her parents had not noticed their presence in their daughter's loft bedroom. Luckily for them, sound did not travel very far outside the room so it was unlikely they would be heard.
Marinette's eye lids were crusty from the lack of rest as she rubbed them, "Louis," Her head turned towards him as she softened her gaze, "I'm so worried about Adrien." Adrien's Plagg had been worried about his miraculous holder so much that he took it upon himself to try and keep an eye on the Agreste mansion to everyone's dismay. Before he had left, Plagg promised to remain out of sight and to provide an update on any findings he may discover by the end of the evening.
Naomi puffed her cheeks and lifted her head towards the morning sky above her, "Man, on a mission to literally save our world and I still have to go to school." The girl was completely oblivious to the conversation going on beside her. Louis sent her an eye roll that told Naomi he did not really care and that was the least of his worries.
"I know that you are worried…" Louis hoisted his mother's backpack up on his shoulder to shift the weight of her books, "But we have to continue forward with the plan."
Marinette shook her head to shake away all of her bad emotions. Louis was absolutely right. She shouldn't be having a pity party right now! The most important thing was to find out where Adrien was and make him remember her. Then deal with Chloe and her future self. "You are right Louis!" The fire of determination lit a new match within her core. She just had to make it through the school day and then everything would be fine. Marinette just couldn't shake off the feeling of impending doom from her stomach. Thinking back to how a future Chloe had arrived and brainwashed Adrien as Plagg had told them. The teen just couldn't understand why this was happening right now. When everything was finally starting to go right with her life.
The trio walked up the empty steps of Francoise Dupont High School and entered the building.
Marinette, Louis, and Naomi had purposefully arrived early before all the other students to get Naomi situated as a student. Marinette explained that Naomi was a transfer student visiting from the US like Louis was and would attend with her temporarily. Marinette's teacher bought the story and welcomed Naomi into her classroom with open arms.
One by one students began to trickle into the classroom to start the day. They were unusually awake and rowdy for this time of morning which made Marinette curious to what they were talking about as everyone came in gossiping. "I wonder if this has to do with the news of Adrien and Chloe on the broadcast last night?" She pondered.
Louis and Naomi had taken up the seats behind where Marinette and Alya usually sat and quietly observed all the students coming into the room waiting for the most important people to arrive: Adrien, Alya, and Nino.
The gossiping was becoming louder as more students filtered into the class that one would think it was the last period of the day as everyone normally became excited to leave. Louis and Naomi looked towards each other with silent communication when they overheard the phrase, "New student!".
Marinette attempted to breathe normally however she could only hold her breath as one by one her friends came into the room as she anticipated Adrien's arrival. As the clock ticked further and further to the start of class Marinette felt like her body was shaking. She fidgeted in her seat when Alya and Nino came into the class room. The two were talking with excitement over something and Marinette watched as Alya gave Nino a kiss on the cheek before sliding into her seat next to her best friend.
"Marinette! You'll never believe it! There is this new girl starting today and she is amazing! We all just met her outside. She is fabulous." Alya went on and on about this supposed new girl before Louis and Naomi was noticed. Turning around in her seat she smiled up at Louis who gave her a small wave and grin. Alya then turned to the girl and waved, "Hi there! My name is Alya. I didn't know there were two new students starting today."
Naomi smiled gently towards her future mother, "My name is Naomi. It's nice to meet you."
"Wow, I love your name!" Alya complimented before turning back in her seat to greet Marinette. Something in Alya stopped everything as she wanted to look at Naomi again. Alya couldn't put her finger on it but like Louis, Naomi felt very familiar to her like she had seen her before.
"Huh. Weird." Alya mumbled to herself before noticing Marinette down in the dumps.
"Hey girl, what's wrong with you? You look like death." She leaned her arm on the desk and squinted her eyes trying to read her best friend. Marinette had been strangely silent in the fact she hadn't even texted Alya last night. They always talked and it was not like Marinette to be so quite.
"Couldn't sleep last night..." Marinette mumbled without removing her exhausted gaze from the door.
"Why?" Alya tilted her head. This was really not like Marinette.
Marinette tore away from her line of vision and gave Alya an incredulous look, "Seriously, Alya? Did you not watch the news last night?"
"What happened?" The received the attention of Nino who also focused on Marinette. Alya and Nino had been up talking on the phone all night. It was rare neither of them had been sucked into social media however last night the two were so enthralled with each other that they both fell asleep during their phone conversation.
"Gabriel Agreste announced the engagement between Adrien Agreste and Chloe Bourgeois last night." Louis piped in from the third row. He knew that his Mama would have a hard time trying to explain it as it hit her so hard knowing the real reason behind it but not being able to explain.
"WHAT?!" The couple exclaimed. Alya stood up right out of her seat with firing rage. Nino couldn't believe that Adrien hadn't told him. How did this even happen?
"Class, please." Miss Bustier chimed in from her desk finally speaking as she had remained silent as her student settled in. She had seen the announcement on the news last night however it was really none of her business or her student's business to be involved in personal affairs.
Alya reluctantly plopped back in her seat. She turned towards the bluenette with a hushed tone, "Marinette, you should have called me. I didn't know! What is going on. How is this happening? Why now?" Alya had so many questions and pulled out her phone under the desk to check the internet. All interest in the new students were forgotten as 'Alya Research Mode' was activated. Pulling up the news report on her phone Alya could only gasp. "Oh my god. It's true." She told Nino in disbelief.
Right then, the man of the hour walked into the room behind a smug looking Chloe. The blonde girl walked with extra pep in her step to her seat completely ignoring everyone as Adrien went towards his seemingly acting completely normal. Marinette sat up straight in her seat as she watched the love of her life walk towards his seat. As their eyes met there was no recollection of what had transpired between them. Instead, Adrien said is normal good morning greetings and settled in for class.
"Dude." Nino blinked his eyes and shook his head, "When were you going to tell us the news of Chloe. And uh- why Chloe?" Nino's voice trailed lower towards the end of his question so the girl couldn't hear him. It was loud enough to reach back towards Louis and Naomi who were all ears.
Adrien shrugged towards his friend, "I guess I didn't find it really all that important." Adrien proceeded to take his book out of his bag while Alya burned with rage behind them.
Marinette watched the two like a hawk. Adrien didn't seem any different than he normally acted thus far however it was still too early to tell. Whatever future Chloe did to Adrien really did erase his memory of her. Marinette's anger began to make its presence known once more as she gripped the edge of her desk in her hands.
Unfortunately for Marinette, Adrien and Nino's conversation was cut short when Miss Bustier cleared her throat to make an announcement.
"Good Morning Class. We have two new students joining our class today. Please give a warm welcome to our first student, Naomi. Naomi is here visiting from the United States and will join our class for a few weeks." Miss Bustier motioned towards Naomi's direction where she gave a small wave.
"Hi, my name is Naomi but I guess you would already know that." She cheekily grinned, placing her arms behind her in embarrassment as the class giggled alongside with her.
Miss Bustier gave a smile towards Naomi before turning towards the classroom door. The class grew silent as a new girl walked into the room. Marinette felt a shiver run up and down her spine as this new student came into the room. She had long brown hair tied on the sides with orange bands and was wearing a very stylish outfit. The teen also had beautiful olive skin and walked with poise. The new girl walked confidently to stand next to the teacher and gave a grin to the class as she was announced.
"Our second new student joining us today is Lila Rossi. Lila has just moved here from Italy with her mother who works for the embassy. Everyone please give her a warm welcome as well."
The students then began murmuring to each other in excitement as Miss Bustier directed Lila towards her new seat assignment.
"Hi everyone! Can't wait to get to know all of you!" Lila stood up straight with a large smile and waved towards the gossiping but excited students.
Marinette raised a brow before leaning towards Alya, "What is with all of the commotion? Is this girl famous or something?" This completely made Alya forget her rage towards Adrien as she couldn't wait to tell Marinette about the new girl.
Alya responded excitedly as loud as she could manage as she whispered, "Lila has such a phenomenal life. She is a model, world peace organizer, and she is best friends with Ladybug and Jagged Stone!"
"HUH?" Marinette was lost for words.
