THE ONE THING MISSING

On the day of her wedding to Stefan, Caroline never expected to receive a congratulatory card from Niklaus Mikaelson. Nor did she expect it to touch her heart and make her feel warm inside. The card simply congratulated her and said the Klaus was happy for her and that her was glad that she was one love closer to her last one, meaning him

After Caroline and Stefan fell out of love, broke up and went their separate ways, Caroline met her third love, Eric. She was a century old then and was attending high school, where she met him and had a whirlwind romance until he decided to cheat on her. She left town but not before compelling him to kill himself if he ever breaks a girl's heart again.

She continued to fall in and out of love for the better half of a millennium, but she was content because she still had her friends who she was still in contact with, she was always surrounded by people who cared for her deeply. Until one fine day, when she woke up and realized that even with everyone around her, she was truly lonely. That's when she decided to go to New York alone to be in a city that never sleeps.

One night while partying in New York, Caroline saw a familiar face, one she thought she wouldn't have to see again. The second Kol saw the blonde bombshell that has his brother wrapped around her little finger, he informed him. But Nik said that he wouldn't come to see her as he was still waiting for her to come to his doorstep. Kol and Caroline started talking and soon became great friends. Of course fearing his brother's wrath, Kol never tried to be anything but friends with Caroline, but he couldn't stop other guys from doing the same. But Caroline never replied to their advances, firmly believing that romance was simply not for her.

For a century, Kol and Caroline moved around the world together. Along the way, Caroline had many encounters with his siblings and the disputes between her and Rebekah ended. Kol too met her friends but instantly became enarmoured with a certain witch turned vampire.

Not wanting to be the third wheel in Bonnie and Kol's relationship, Caroline left the two to head out to the Eastern countries.

When Caroline was enjoying a pani puri near the Gateway of India, she received a phone call from a very excited Bonnie, telling her that she was getting married to Kol and asked Caroline to be her maid of honor.

As fate would have it, Kol's bestman was none other than Klaus. And the most clichéd thing happened at the wedding reception, a drunk Caroline slept with a drunk Klaus. Even through her drunken haze, Caroline knews that that was the best night she had ever spent.

Klaus somehow convinced her to give this "thing" between them a try.

A century had gone by and they are still together and strong as ever, when Klaus finally proposed. Caroline got her dream wedding and realized that all her life, in all her romances, the one thing that was missing was Klaus.
