Riley Matthews was the kindest person on the face of the planet; She loves everything and everyone. She is optimistic, naïve, and sweet. Riley wants to help people, and she needs to help Maya.

Maya Hart is a girl who needs help. . . Maya doesn't want help.

Maya shouldn't keep secrets from Riley, but she can't tell her the darkest secret she has. She can't tell Riley that she's sick. Maya can't tell her because Riley would leave her, and Maya doesn't want Riley to leave her. Maya doesn't want Riley to be afraid of her. Riley can't know Maya's secret.

Maya's secret is that she's sick. She's so sick; she's broken. Maya has to fulfill her urge. Maya can't resist the urge. Maya has to kill, that's the urge. Maya has to kill to stay happy.

Maya keeps a knife in her bedroom. Maya's knife is stained red.

Maya hates little girls. Little girls make her sad that she doesn't have a father, little girls make her want to cut.

Maya loves it when she sees them – try to – scream, she covers their mouths with her hand. Maya loves the feeling of cutting them up. She loves to watch the red flow from their necks.

Blood tastes so good.

Maya hides their bodies in alleys.

Riley doesn't know about the urge. Riley shouldn't know about the urge. Maya can't tell her. She can't, and she won't. Riley would leave her. Riley would be afraid of her. Maya would go to jail, and her life would be ruined.

Maya's urge is getting worse, and she can't handle killing only one girl a week.

Maya is now standing over Riley as she sleeps. Maya's holding the knife, staring at her. Maya's crying, she's afraid. Maya's afraid that she can't resist the urge to kill someone older.

Maya's afraid that Riley will be her next victim.
