Chuck stared up at the starry sky from the cliff where he sat, wondering where all these stars came from. He thought for a moment, looking down at the now nearly black water of the ocean that surrounded his island home. Suddenly, something stirred the bushes behind him. Without thinking, Chuck jumped up and began preforming some of his stretches, never missing a chance to show off his skills.
"Chuck?"
"Oh hey Red! Wass-up?"
Red stepped out into the clearing, a look of tiredness and concern on his face
"What are you doing up here? You should be in bed!" Red scolded lightly. Chuck's smile slipped slightly.
"I tried! But why sleep when you can do this all night? Hee-yah" Chuck backed away from red, extending his wings to look like a bird about to take flight. With both eyebrows lowered, Chuck leaped backwards, landing expertly on his feet at the edge of the cliff.
"Yep, falling off a cliff always does sound better than sleeping." Red said sarcastically.
"I wasn't falling! And I'm not tired.. Plus, who better to look after the eggs than (Chuck struck a super hero pose)
El dormidor!"
"That means the Sleeper. And even the pigs sleep at night"
"Whatever!" Chuck raised his beak, then quickly sat back down, this time with no intention of getting up. Red sighed, turning to leave, when a small, almost defeated sigh sounded. He turned back quickly, surprised.
"You okay chuck?"
"Well, of coarse, I'm just..." Chuck looked up at the sky, his emerald eyes glistening.
"Red, where did the stars come from?"
Red walked over and sat next to him, his eyes trained on the massive expanse above.
"Your guess is as good-"
Red was cut off slightly as Chuck proceeded to give him puppy eyes. Red cleared his throat.
"Well, if this will help you go to sleep and get me home any quicker... Okay, there once was a cloud named...
"Chuck!"
".. Olken, and he was big and white. Each day as the sun set however, his job was to shine his white light in the dark to serve as a becon for all birds who had to fly at night. But Olken was always tired, because he never had a chance to turn off his light. So, one day went to the sun and told her to send some of her light at night, and during the day she could rest her-"
Suddenly a yawn escaped chucks beak and cCuck quickly reached up with both wings to clasp it closed.
Red folded his wings and fixed Chuck with a glare. Chuck scowled.
" I'm not tired!" Chuck insisted, throwing his wings down.
"Any way, he told her she could rest her light behind him during the day. The sun agreed, and she sent thousands of.. Um, fire clouds to rain the next sunset."
"Not tired.." Chuck whispered to himself.
"These clouds rained fire rocks, which are yellow like the sun. And keeping to his promise, Olken expanded and grew until he covered the sun and-"
Chuck let out quick whistle-like breaths from his beak, his head leaned forward and his eyes were closed, all indications that he was asleep. Red smiled, and stood up and stretched. Carefully, so as not to wake his feathered fried up, Red lifted Chuck and carried him bridal style back down the mountain and back to the tree where the flock slept. Red rolled his eyes as he placed Chuck onto his favorite branch, knowing that to marrows excuse might be more bizarre then this. With that in mind, Red went to sleep, dreaming about clouds and stars.
