Chapter Five

*Present Day*

Loud beeping wakes up the Kommissar from her sleep. She jerks up immediately, remembering that it is not her alarm clock at home but the monitor that is connected to the tiny Bella she'd stayed at the hospital for. Fear laces through her blood as she sees the young woman turning blue in the face, her chest moving rapidly up and down as she squirmed against the white sheets.

Kommissar leaps up off the incredibly uncomfortable couch and hits the button on the wall that calls the hospital staff and then moves to grab Beca's hand. "Tiny Maus," she says frantically tapping her hand as gently as she can in her worry. "You need to wake up for me. The doctors are on their way to fix you up, I promise." She watches as her face turns a little more blue, her lips parted slightly as she gasped for air. "Scheiße."

She looks at the door in frustration willing the doctors to come in. As if they heard her unspoken plea they fly into the room, one doctor and three nurses. The doctor takes one look at the Bella and ushers Kommissar out of the way. She tried to keep holding her hand but the doctor barked, "Giv slip," without sparing her a glance.

Knowing better than to get in the professionals ways she let go. "Få lungespecialisten herinde nu," the doc said and then one of the nurses was rushing out of the room. One of the two nurses left grabbed an oxygen mask and held it over Beca's mouth and nose. The small woman's eyes remain closed as everyone rushed around her.

Kommissar stood back and watched, her heart racing in her chest, almost matching the pace of the monitor. The staff talked to one another and then the Bella was being wheeled out. The staff's words having not registered in Kommissar's mind. She jerked forward as they got her tiny maus out the door, trying to keep the girl in her sights, feeling obligated to make sure that she was okay.

"Hvad sker der?" She asks a nurse as she rushes out the door, seeing him hanging back a little, the others pushing on ahead, still in a frenzy around Beca.

The nurse doesn't answer for a second as he looks at her as they follow the bed being wheeled down the hall. "De tror, hun har en punkteret lunge… De tager hende til en computeriseret tomografi nu."

"Hvad betyder det for hende?" She asks, suddenly feeling even more worried then when she first woke to the loud monitor.

"Et brystrør sandsynligvis og ilt i et stykke tid, indtil det heler." Before she can respond he says, "Du skal vente på venteværelset. Jeg vil komme til jer med nogen nyheder."

They reach the door at this time and she looks at him, already knowing that the worry she was feeling inside was working its way onto her face.

"Undskyld," he says before disappearing into the room, the door clicking with a finality.

Kommissar stared at the door in shock, feeling dismay take over. "Scheiße," she mutters and punches the door wall in frustration, before turning and walking towards the signs for the waiting room.

Kommissar had taken turns between staring at the white walls, and pacing for what felt like hours. She glances at her phone again in frustration, noting that almost two hours had passed since making it into the waiting room.

This time though her phone offers her a text from Pieter as a distraction.

Dummkopf: How goes it?

Kommissar: It goes, around five am the Bella was taken away for some work to be done.

Pieter's response was almost instantaneous, which relieved Kommissar, she needed a distraction.

Dummkopf: What? What happened? Is the little troll okay? Or are they finally doing something about her height so she can reach the top shelves?

Kommissar: HA! I so needed that thank you Pieter.

Instead of a text response her phone begins to buzz rapidly in her hand, informing her that she had an incoming call. "Halo Dummkopf," she answers easily.

"Oi, that's not very nice, I called you because I was worried about you." A mockingly hurt voice comes through the small phone speakers.

"And?" She replies, leaning back in her chair, resting her head on the wall behind her and closing her eyes for a moment, suddenly feeling exhausted as her friends voice calmed her down. "Has that ever stopped me before?"

"Not it hasn't," he grumbles. "But seriously, is she okay?"

Kommissar sighs heavily, her eyes coming open as she leaned forward, elbow on her knees and the hand that wasn't holding her phone on her forehead. "I don't know," She says honestly. "Last I knew they thought she had a punctured lung and were taking her for a CT scan. The nurse I spoke to briefly said that she could possibly need a chest tube."

There was silence on the other end before a muttered, "Scheiße."

"Yeah I know."

"How did that happen?"

"I don't know. I've been too scared to look up reasons."

More silence ensued before Pieter asked quietly, "Why are you there Kommissar?"

And then more silence, Kommissar stopped and tried to think of why but nothing came right to her mind. No sudden epiphany, no anything. Just the same feeling of certainty that she needed to be there as she had since the Bella got hurt.

"It just feels like I need to be here," she finally says. "Like I needed to be here for her."

"We should probably-." Pieter started but Kommissar cut him off almost immediately.

"The nurse is here Pieter, I will call you later."

The nurse from before walks right up to her and says, "Hun er klar til besøgende." Kommissar was on her feet before he could finish the sentence.

She begins to follow him down the hallway when suddenly loud noises come from the elevator and then the Bellas burst out. "They don't make those elevators for all of my curves and too many twig bitches." Kommissar almost facepalms as she recognizes Fat Amy's voice.

"What are you doing here?" The small angry redhead asks with suspicious eyes.

"I stayed with Beca last night," She responded easily, staring her down.

"You what?!"
