Chapter 38

The morning broke clear and bright. The sweet smell of spring in the air, as birds chirped. They flitted branch to branch, collecting berries and seeds as their eggs began to hatch, hungry little mouths peeping for food. Small green buds adorned the trees and bushes, growing until ready to burst forth. Evelyn smiled, stroking her ever expanding belly. Two more months, two more very long months until their child came into this world. She contemplated the buds, wondering if they to feel the increasing pressure and discomfort as their time grew near, and if they too felt the overwhelming excitement at the transformation to come. She liked to think so.

"Evelyn," Arasseth's voice spoke behind her, "They are arriving."

Breaking out of her trance, she turned toward the other elleth smiling, "Then let us go greet our guest." She followed the elleth from her parlor, her light green dress swishing around her legs, trailing lightly behind her. Four small intricate braids held her hair back, letting it fall in loose waves down her back. A small delicate circlet adorned her head. While simple, her attire bestowed her rank and position elegantly.

"Has Legolas an idea?" She asked, waddling as gracefully as she could down the hall, fingers trailing gently over the railing.

"Not that Cúnir can tell. He said he seemed utterly surprised when he mentioned riders approaching."

"Very good," Evelyn replied, "And the rooming arrangement?"

Arasseth smiled, "They are currently underway. All of our homes are now built and ready to move into, our maids are seeing to that now, as your family's people are moving them to the main wing, leaving a room open between yours and Elrond's. As requested, your brothers have the last rooms." She snickered, thinking of the pranks the twins had already pulled on everyone, as they gave their sister a break due to her current situation.

"I should have put them next to the nursery as payback." Evelyn chimed in with her own laughter.

"Once that is complete and the guest wing cleaned, it will be ready for our visitors."

"Now let us just pray that everyone can get along." She stated, stepping out into the brisk late morning air, relishing the smells with a deep breath. Pausing, she rubbed her back as the aching set in.

Her family had arrived before her, and already Celebrían was scolding her brothers. Stopping next to them, Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "Do I want to know?" She asked Celebrían.

"No, no you do not." The older elleth replied, as her sons tried to look innocent.

Rounding on her brothers, she placed her finger in their faces, "I may be pregnant, but I can still use my powers, because if I have to freeze you in place, I will gladly do so. I did not arrange this surprise for the two of you to ruin it. Now act your age." Just to prove her point she froze their shirts together and left them that way.

"Hey!" They protested, "We have not done anything!"

"But you were planning it, this just ensures you take me seriously." Evelyn replied, eyeing them devilishly as she went to stand at the front of the procession, leaving them attached and causing murmurs of giggles from those who watched. The twins continued to desperately try and free themselves.

"Where is Legolas?" She asked Stopping beside Galadriel, though she already had an idea. Gingerly she rubbed her back, working to soothe the twinge.

"Once he heard of our visitors, he took Cúnir, Haldir, Lindir, Celeborn, and Elrond with him to 'investigate'."

"I had hoped to get to see his face when he realized it was his father, however, I am also not surprised, I think he misses being part of the forest guard at times."

"It is probably good they get a moment alone and the time to bond before they arrive, other than his own people, many here harbor resentment toward the Woodland king." Galadriel spoke.

Evelyn sighed, "I know you are right. However, I thought elves to be above such things." She added as a joke. Knowing full well elves could hold a grudge for a very long time, change did not come easy for beings who never died. Galadriel smiled.

"What have my grandsons done now?"

Evelyn looked over her shoulder, watching them pout. "Nothing yet, Celebrían seemed to think I did not want to know what they had up their sleeves."

"And you will release them?" She questioned.

"Oh yes," She replied as she heard the sound of hooves fast approaching, "Right about…now" She laughed, releasing them right as they attempted to free themselves again, causing them both to tumble sideways. Turning back, she faced the group of approaching riders. She shifted her weight on her feet, finding it uncomfortable to be still.

The riders from home pulled up first, letting the others trail behind. However, long curly golden hair caught her attention. An elleth rode between her mate and his father, her breath caught, "Mandos released her," she breathed. A large smile erupted on her face and the look of pure joy on all three faces and the overwhelming sense of elation that hit her through their bond as she opened herself up to her mate.

"Was that not the plan?" Celebrían asked, stepping beside them.

"Yes, it was, yes." Evelyn repeated, "But I did not know that it was done, just that they agreed. I invited Thranduil here to be closer to Mandos' halls and for the birth. I had assumed we would have to travel there."

"You should not be traveling anywhere in your condition." Both mother and daughter replied simultaneously.

"Oh pish, Nienna assured me I would not give birth until she was released, and they were together again."

As soon as the words left her mouth, she felt a cramp in her abdomen as warm liquid dripped down her legs.

"Well shit." She exclaimed, reaching for the women beside her. All it took was one glance at the ground for them to understand. The next thing she knew, everything was a commotion of movement. Her Elladan scooped her into his arms as he swept her back inside, ordering the maids to ready her room, Elrohir followed closely behind collecting the needed supplies, trailed by Galadriel. Celebrían stayed behind, to inform the others what was occurring, preparing to let Legolas and his family know they were about to welcome their newest member. However, the piercing cry that echoed through the halls, told everyone the answers they sought.

The day was bright and clear, like the many before since Thranduil and his mate had arrived. Evelyn reclined on a chaise lounge brought outside to her garden, as she enjoyed her herbal tea. She watched as her father-in-law escorted his mate through garden, her brothers, sat playing a game with Cúnir and Lindir. Haldir, Celeborn, and Elrond sat at a nearby table pouring over books and scrolls. Celebrían and her mother finished a tapestry to go in their great room, a tapestry that depicted their very large and unorthodox family.

Legolas walked up behind her, rubbing her shoulders as he bent down to kiss her lightly. "All the pain and sorrow, and loss we faced, that we all face, it was worth it for this. No ellon, no man, could have asked for more. You have blessed me Evelyn, more than you know." He kissed her lips.

"And you have blessed me Legolas," She replied returning his kiss before she looked down at the two sleeping bundles in her arms. They both placed tiny kisses on their twins' head, smiling down at the gifts the Valar had given them.
