This is a one-shot that I got the idea for because one of my best friends just got a new kitten that is yet to be named, but I thought this might make a cute, short story.
Disclaim: I do not own the characters- they belong to Riordan. Except the 'monster.' He's mine.
Not-Going-to-Tell-You-Who's POV
I am the darkness beneath your bed. The tailing shadow following you.
Padding softly across the grass I made my way to the heels of a boy I never noticed before. Shaggy dark hair hung from his tilted head as he leaned on the shoulder of a boy with shorter blond hair. The blond haired boy laughed, and the dark haired one smiled.
With him, the dark haired boy brought sadness. A lot of sadness. That was probably why I was so drawn to him. After stumbling over a stone I continued to follow the pair as they made their way to a group of buildings.
They separated with a kiss- the blond haired one towards a bright building and the black haired one towards a shady looking building. I followed him. The shadows and darkness pulled at me.
The boy dropped into a plush bed and started snoring. I plodded over to him. Jumping lightly onto the blankets. His body emanated warmth. I curled up against his stomach, my fur causing friction, and purring contently.
Third Person POV
"I told you Will," Nico exclaimed, "I don't know where it came from!"
A small, furry black creature lay on Nico's bed, curled up in the sheets. The only indication that it was alive was the constant rise and fall of it's breathing.
"Well what is it doing?" Will asked.
"Sleeping?" Nico said, unsure.
"I mean here," Will answered, slapping Nico's arm.
"How am I supposed to know!" Nico shouted.
Will shushed him, worried about waking the creature up.
"I just woke up this morning and there it was, cuddling up against me," Nico said.
"I'll get Chiron," Will said.
"And I'll get the seven," Nico replied.
They returned to the cabin about twenty minutes later with eight witnesses.
Piper almost ran up to hug the fuzzball, but Jason held her back, worried of what the thing might do.
Annabeth opened a book on mythological monsters she had brought with her, searching for what it might be, while Percy protectively wrapped his arms around her.
Hazel stared at it in wonder. Frank on the other hand debated on whether or not to turn into a cat to talk to it.
Everyone else stood there, staring at the puffball, not saying a word.
The little mound of fur rumbled and began to wake up. It stretched its claws coming out before retracting again. Everyone took a cautious step back.
The mini monster hopped lightly off the bed and padded over to Nico. Nico stood absolutely still. The black fuzzy creature circled Nico's feet, rubbing against his legs and purring occasionally.
"Mr. di Angelo," Chiron asked, inquisitively, "Why is there a tiny feline in your cabin?"
"Honestly Chiron," Nico replied, his voice tight from the still circling feline, "I have absolutely no idea."
Nico reached down and picked up the tiny black kitten and held it in front of his face. It purred and rubbed against his cheek.
"From what I can see, although I can't pronounce the name," Annabeth said, "This is a creature that feeds off of sadness, instead turning it into joy."
The unspoken part of what Annabeth said: Nico was the most depressed of the people here, hence the cat's strange attachment to him.
The kitten looked up at Nico with coal black eyes and meowed. Nico's heart melted. He was going to keep the cat, no matter what everyone else said.
"I'm gonna name him Shadow," Nico said.
"Shadow?" Leo questioned.
"Shadow," Nico confirmed. "Because he tailed me home."
Cat POV
I. Am. Shadow.
This is just meant to be a short story, so THE END.
