Title: Two days
author: Cindy Ryan
spoilers: all
She'd been in his life two days. Forty-eight hours. Some people you just click with. Kurt had felt a connection even before he saw the scar and the pieces fell into place. Now as he drove up to the scene in his stolen truck Weller was afraid he'd lost her before his theory was confirmed. Reade's half joking question earlier asking if Jane could drive echoed through Kurt's thoughts. From what he could see she'd done a damn good job disabling Gibson's vehicle.
As Kurt ran towards the FBI's overturned SUV he saw that the former pilot wasn't going anywhere Kurt moved to the SUV part of him afraid of what he'd find. Weller did his bet to ignore the bullet holes in the windshield. Tried his best to ignore the cold knot of dread in stomach. As soon as Kurt saw those big brown eyes he relaxed. He rested a hand on her right shoulder.
"You okay?"Kurt asked his gaze not leaving hers."Can you move?"
"Yes.""Jane replied.
"I'll gonna get you out of here.""Kurt promised.
Less than a minute later Jane was free. Kurt looked her up and down for injuries. Finding nothing serious. Kurt told himself he was keeping a hand on her waist to steady her. In reality it was more for himself. A reassurance that Jane was okay. She'd survived everything that day impressing Kurt once again with how she handled herself. Kurt saw Jane look fearfully back at the wrecked vehicle. He shifted his hand from waist to left shoulder. Their eyes met and Kurt wished their was more time for comfort. More time to deal and decompress from the intense day. It would have to wait their was still a missing child.
"Let's go."Kurt suggested and they reached Gibson just as the rest of his team arrived
Hours later Kurt watched as Jane made it safely through the doors of the safehouse. He waited until a light came on before pulling away from the curb and merging with traffic. Jane's question earlier bounced around his thoughts.
'Why would they send me to you? Why not just say FBI?'
It'd be twenty-four to forty-eight hours until Taylor's DNA could be tested. Until what his gut, heart and soul was telling him could be proven. That his childhood friend had been dropped back into his life over twenty years later He hadn't wanted to get her hopes up when they talked earlier. Now he was thinking maybe he should've said something.
So much hung on that DNA test. Jane's identity, his father's innocence and clarifying the reason his name was tattooed on her back. Kurt wasn't sure how'd he react if the results confirmed it. On one hand Kurt knew he'd be happy to know Taylor was back. The other part of Kurt would analyze the mystery. Where had she been all this time? Most important who was the bastard behind it? The one who had stolen her life?
Shaking away the thoughts Kurt concentrated on the New York traffic Time would answer some if hopefully not all of those questions. More than anything Kurt found himself wishing for a positive result of the DNA tests. Surprisingly he was wishing more for Jane than for him. Giving Jane some little bit of peace of mind and security would be a weight off of Kurt's shoulders. The bonus would be if she did turn out to be his missing childhood friend. Hopefully fate would give them a break and get some good news for a change.
