Lightning
She watches from the darkness of the shadows as he cries. She doesn't speak, doesn't move, barely breathes. She knows that to try and comfort him now would be a mistake. She doesn't know how she knows, after all she doesn't know anything more about him than his name, but she trusts her instincts as she always has before. They've never led her wrong yet.
The astronomy tower has long been a beacon to troubled souls and she is no different. She feels a freedom up here that she never feels with her feet on the ground. She loves it most when it storms, the electricity of the lightning and the rumble of the thunder makes her feel alive.
It is not storming tonight. The night sky is clear except for a peppering of stars and there is nothing to drown out the sounds of his anguish. She waits him out and when he finally leaves, tears long wiped away, she steps into the light cast down from the moon. She will continue to wait until the time is right, and she will help him.
There is something special about him. A lightness that fights the darkness trying to consume him. She hopes she can help that light flourish.
"You don't want to do that," she murmurs, though the night is another calm one and her voice echoes in the tower. He is sitting on the ledge, his legs dangling out into the nothingness of the night sky, and she knows what he is thinking.
"Go away."
"I can't do that. You don't want to do that," she repeated, stepping once more into the light. "You're letting them win."
"I don't care any more."
"Don't let them beat you," she whispered.
"They already have."
"No, they haven't. Take my hand, Theodore, and trust that this war will be over before you are expected to take his mark."
"You can't know that."
"No, I can't, and yet I do. Come down from the ledge, Theo. Don't let them have the victory without a fight."
The warmth of her hand clashed with the coldness of his but she helped him stand beside her.
"Why?"
"Because you're important."
She left first for the first time, leaving him with confusion and hope battling in his eyes.
She'd done all she could for him. Now he had to find the strength to hold onto the hope.
"How did you know, Luna?"
She watched the lightning flash across the sky from her place against his chest and smiled.
"I believed in lightning."
