Ruby didn't consider herself much of an artist, that was Mal's territory, but when she woke up properly that next morning she found a pencil and an empty notebook and had went to town. She drew so many things, things that she recognized only from stories and fairytales, like a white rabbit, an engraved door, a rose bush, a pocket watch. She also drew things that she recognized all too well, like Maleficent's scepter, the entrance to the museum, and the Queen of Auradon's crown.
And then there was her current masterpiece, a looking glass.
She was so into her work that she barely spared Jay a glance when he kissed her forehead and told her he'd be going out to the backyard with Carlos and the boys to teach them about Tourney. Jay on the other hand was quite concerned about his girlfriend, when he woke up and she was across the room at her vanity he was curious but didn't question her, he knew she would come out and tell him soon enough, but he was still concerned about her odd behavior as of late.
Speaking of Jay, Ruby thought as she got up and went over to the window, pulling back the blinds to reveal the backyard wear Celia and Freddie were dazzling Jane with their card readings, Dizzy was marveling at the grounds, Jay was showing off his tourney moves and Carlos was jammed between the twins on a bench a few feet away. Evie was downstairs in her studio and Mal was at a meeting with the royal family.
In the backyard Jay had just finished bestowing words of wisdom on his best friend and sat down next to one of the twins on the bench.
"So you're really set on Shore-Forest University after graduation?" Carlos questioned cautiously, "You know that's like a thousand miles away."
Jay shrugged, "Yeah but the Knights have won the Tourney bowl the last two years."
"Have you told Ruby yet?"
Jay sighed, his shoulders falling, "No, it hasn't been the right time."
"Dude you're gonna have to tell her soon. Graduation is a few weeks away."
Ruby sighed and lifted up her final piece, staring at it for a long moment before she opened her mouth,
Invisible when you're sad
Clocks tick and phones still ring
The world carries on like mad
But nobody sees a thing
Whispering behind their hands
Lost for kind words to say
Nobody understands
And everyone goes away
Grownups wanna fix things
When they can't it only fills them with shame
So they just look away
Is it being greedy to need somebody to see me,
And say my name?
When you don't know your mom
No one turns off the sun
Folks carry on, that's that
You're invisible when you're sad.
She sigh folding the paper and placing it in her pockets moments before there was a knock at the door then it opened, it was Mal and she let out a breath of relief, "Hey good you're still here, you have a minute? I really need to talk to you and E."
Mal led her down to Evie's workshop where the blue haired girl was working on one of her many creations. And there she confessed to them what had been said during the meeting she'd just attended.
"Who else knows about the crown and the scepter?" Evie asked thoughtfully.
"No one." Mal shrugged leaning back against a table, "I mean, think about it, people are scared enough as it is. We have to employ these entirely new security measures."
"Will this delay our bringing over more V.K.'s?" Ruby asked from her spot leaned against a wall.
"We're talking about closing the barrier for good."
"But you said no right." Ruby asked the obvious question and at her sister's head tilt she went on, "I mean the five of us are living the dream here, and we finally get to share that. What could be more important than that?"
"Yeah. I know. I mean, maybe security or maybe peace of mind for everyone in Auradon."
"Is that what they're thinking? " Evie asked in shock, "And were they seriously thinking that no one will ever go in or out of the Isle ever again? What, we never get to go back and see our parents?"
At that Ruby's heart gave pang as she remembered her dream from the night before, but she pushed it away for now, "And what about these kids? We promised them that they could go back and visit whenever they wanted."
"Yeah, I know."
"M., I am so glad that you are going to be Queen. You will be a part of these conversations, you will stand up for the V.K.s." Evie said while standing and grabbing Mal's hand.
Ruby pushed off of the wall, "She's right, thank you for telling us."
Evie grinned pulling the three of them into a group hug. "Now, let's go get ready for Jane's birthday party."
While her friends did that, Ruby snuck out if the backdoor of the house and hopped onto her bike heading for the school. Luckily it was fairly empty since most of the students were on their way to the Enchanted Lake for the birthday party. So Ruby was able to stroll right into the school without being stopped and walk up to Ben's office.
She knocked on the door to Ben's office once before entering.
"Hey Ben?"
"Ruby?" he said in shock standing up from behind his desk.
"Are you busy?"
"No, no come in. Are you okay?" He asked rounding his desk.
"Yeah I'm fine, I just," she stammered coming to a stop I'm front of him, "I need to talk to you about something really important. But I need you to promise that you'll keep it between us."
He sighed, "Ruby I don't know."
"Please Ben." She begged grabbing his hand.
"Okay I promise." He said reluctantly, before placing both hands on her shoulders, "What's going on? Are you okay?"
"When you're parents united all the kingdoms. What happened to Wonderland?" he gave her a confused look, "I know that my mother was imprisoned there, but I hear her. I think she's reaching out to me. I think she wants me to come back." She confessed, "But I think she wants me to do something really bad, or I already did."
"The scepter?"
"I dreamt about that and these crown all night." Ben turned his back to her and laid his hands flat on his desk. "Ben if you know something please tell me."
He shook his head, "There might be something."
"What?"
He looked across the room where a large mirror sat on the wall, "The last portal to Wonderland." He explained.
"The looking glass," Ruby whispered, "Is there any way for someone to get out of it?" she asked as they both approached it.
"No, my parents had it enchanted."
"So how can I get in?"
"What?" Ben gasped, "Ruby I'm not sure that's a good idea."
"I need to know Ben."
"Technically our only half Wonderland blood, so you should be able to go in and out without problem, but that's a big maybe."
"I'll take the risk."
Ben sighed again but nodded dragging a chair over to set it up beneath the mirror and helping her to stand on top of it.
"Remember time works pretty different in there. A couple hours, would only be a few minutes."
"Got it."
"And Ruby," he said gripping her hand once, "Be careful, it's been a long time since anyone has set foot in Wonderland."
"I will."
With that Ruby took a deep breath and stepped through the Looking Glass.
Yes this story will be continuing, I just lost motivation and inspiration for it for quite a while, but not to worry, I'm back.
Eeyoredessa: If you remember back at the end of the second Descendants movie, Ruby and Mal turned into a two-headed dragon. That is no more.
As always, let me know what you think and what you'd like to see in the future.
