Chapter 8: Abandoned

Saturday morning Rachel laid in bed thinking about the night before. Was it possible? Could she be feeling something? 'Me and Santana "Satan" Lopez?' She couldn't believe it. After all the slushies that Santana herself had thrown in her face and the insults, and come to find out the cheerleader likes her. She shook her head because she was starting to get a headache.

"Rachel, honey, are you up?" Shelby asked through the other side of the door.

"Yes Shelby!" Rachel answered.

"Can I come in?" Shelby asked.

Rachel quickly scanned her room from where she laid against her headboard to make sure there was nothing that would get her caught. All clear. "Yeah, sure." She said.

Shelby pushed the door open and walked into the room. Actually seeing her daughter in the room made her heart clench. She loved her daughter so much. "How was the party?" She asked sitting on the edge of the bed.

"It was fine." Rachel said. What else was she supposed to say? 'I freaked out so I went to my old house and binged and purged and went back to the party?'

"Just fine?" Shelby pressed. Things still seemed awkward and all she wanted to do was spend time with her daughter and know everything about her.

"Yeah, fine." Rachel answered. She was starting to get antsy. Was Shelby onto her? Why was she asking all those questions? Couldn't she just leave her alone and ignore her like her dads used to?

Shelby sighed. "Rachel...I really want things between us to work." She said looking Rachel in the eye.

"I want that too..." Rachel said softly.

"I want to know everything about you. You can tell me anything." Shelby said. More than anything she wanted her daughter to open up to her.

Rachel opened her mouth to say something. For a split second she even thought about telling her Mother but that thought died when her phone rang and the ID said "DADS". She picked up her phone and swiped 'Answer', "Hello? Dad? Daddy?"

"Hello Rachel." Hiram and Leroy said in unison.

"Are you coming home soon?" Rachel asked.

"Actually we are calling to tell you that we are not coming home." Hiram said.

"What do you mean?" Rachel asked.

"We have decided to relocate here..."Hiram rambled on and on.

Rachel's blood ran cold and her heart raced. This couldn't be happening. The phone slipped from her hand and fell on the bed.

Shelby cupped Rachel's face. "Rachel? Honey? What is it?" She asked. When Rachel didn't answer Shelby picked up the phone and put it on speaker.

"...I mean you are 14 now and you have your life and we have our own and we decided we are just not cut out to be parents. You understand right? Rachel? Hello?" Hiram said.

"Oh I understand." Shelby said through clenched teeth.

"Shelby?!" Hiram squawked.

"That's right asshole." Shelby said.

"Oh, well it worked out better than Leroy and I thought it would. We will UPS the papers over night. I hope the two of you are happy together." Hiram said before ending the call.

Shelby stared at the phone with a look so full of hatred if it were possible the phone would burst into flames. She was beyond mad. Who the hell did the Berry's think they were? She took a deep breathe and looked over a Rachel who was pale and covered in a thin layer of sweat. "Rachel, baby, look at me." She said sitting down on the bed next to her daughter.

Rachel looked at Shelby and lost her resolve. She threw herself into Shelby's arms. "Th-they left me!" She cried through her sobs.

Shelby just held Rachel close and stroked her hair. "It's ok honey. I'm here." She said. She wished she knew where Hiram and Leroy were because she would go find them and rip them to shreds. She kissed Rachel's head and gently rocked her.
