I do not own Avatar: The Legend of Korra or Naruto
*Zaofu: Suyin's Estate*
It was certainly an interesting night between Naruto and Lin. The former spent the time telling stories out of the Biju family history book. Tales such as the time his brother, Son Goku the Four-Tails' arrogant showboating resulted in him accidentally setting off a massive volcanic chain-reaction that resulted in the splitting of an entire continent into the islands that would eventually become the Fire Nation.
And the time his sister, Chōmei the Seven-Tails' mischievousness resulted in the creation of the massive canyon known as the Great Divide.
Now while both of these incidents may have worked out in the end, the Nine-Tails and the rest of their brethren at the time of each incident were quick to point out the senseless destruction and endangerment of both humans and spirits living in the area.
Not that those three were the only ones guilty of such mishaps in their youth. In fact, much of the ancient world's geography was changed due to the youthful exploits of the Biju. It was the reason the humans of the era were forced to take refuge on the backs of lion turtles.
Though not as long reaching, Lin returned the favor in kind by telling the story of her own childhood exploits with Suyin. Lin and Suyin had responded to their mother's more hands off, parenting style in two very different ways. Whereas Lin decided to follow in Toph's footsteps by joining the police force, Su went in the exact opposite direction; commonly running around with criminals and just acting out in general.
Things between the Beifong sisters remained tense with the continuous cycle of Suyin breaking the law with Lin being forced to bring her in repeatedly. That was until, one day, Suyin got roped into acting as the getaway driver in a robbery, that Lin stopped.
When Lin reprimanded her sister, Suyin dismissed the whole thing, saying she was doing her friends a favor before trying to walk away. Not about to let her sister off so easily, Lin caught her with a metal cable, that an enraged Suyin severed and caused the line to snap back and gave the elder sister the trademark scar across her face.
If bearing a reminder of the incident wasn't bad enough, when Lin finally brought Suyin before their mother, the then police chief not wanting to send her own daughter to prison, destroyed the report and sent Suyin to live with their grandparents, before retiring the next year.
"I'm sorry" was all Naruto to could say at the end of the story. For thirty years, Lin has carried this resentment. Truly it put the sibling rivalry between himself and Shukaku to shame.
"Not looking for pity" Lin said bitingly, still enraged at the memory. "So, what's your take on it?"
"Well, personally I think there's only one thing to do."
The next morning, Team Avatar with the exception of Naruto was gathered in Suyin's dining room, enjoying breakfast with their hostess and Opal.
"Hey, has anyone seen Chief Beifong?" Mako asked. After the rather tense ending to dinner, Lin was nowhere to be seen.
"She's probably off sulking in her room" said Korra dismissively. The Avatar paused in enjoying her meal when something occurred to her. "Come to think of it, I haven't seen Naruto around either" she commented somberly. She thought things were starting to get better between them and hated to think the blonde was gone because of some slight she made.
"Maybe they're together" Asami suggested, reading Korra's mood. "Naruto's usually had a pretty good relationship with Lin."
"Well, if he is, I hope she's setting her straight" said Su. "I know Lin has problem with me, but she had no right to yell at Opal last night."
The sudden sound of running footsteps catch their attention as Suyin's twins, Wei and Wing, come running in, helping themselves to the food on the table.
"All set for your power disc game today, guys?" Su asked her sons.
"Yeah, all set to kick Wei's butt" said Wing.
"I'm going to power disc your face" Wei fired back. Punching his twin in the stomach, before turning to the Avatar. "You should come play with us."
"Oh, I don't think I'd be much competition since I can't metalbend" Korra replied, much to Suyin's surprise.
"Really? Lin never offered to train you?"
"Nope, and I guess I never thought to bring it up because I was learning to airbend, then there was the pro-bending, then I got tied up fighting the Equalists. It was a busy few months."
"Well, it's probably for the best. I'm sure Lin would be a horrible teacher" Suyin smiled slyly, sharing a chuckle with Korra. "As the Avatar, you should have mastery over all elements. I'd be happy to show you the basics."
"Really?" Korra asked, excited at the prospect of furthering her bending prowess. "That would be great."
Though he tried to hide his best to hide it, Bolin's efforts proved futile as Opal recognizing his interest in the subject turned to him and said, "You should try it too."
Wide eyed, Bolin quickly sputtered, "Uh, nah, I'm more of an Earth guy. The dirt, rocks, you know, maybe some light gravel- That's kind of where my heart is."
"Ok, 'Earth guy'" Suyin said amused. "Well, let me know if you change your mind."
Finishing breakfast, Suyin led Korra out to the courtyard where there were several meteorites perched on pedestals.
"These meteorites are perfect for beginner metalbenders. The metals have a unique property, making them easier to bend." Suyin explained, bending a small portion to levitate between her hands, before changing shape into six-pointed star, then into the shape of a diamond.
"That's amazing!" Korra awed. Su bent the meteorite fragment back into a lumpy, rectangular shape and passed it to Korra, telling her to give it a try. Determined Korra held the meteorite in her right hand, as she moved her left above the metal.
Intensely focused on bending the metal, Korra nearly jumped when she heard a twig snap. Curious she looked to see what appeared to be Bolin and Pabu ducking behind a small meteorite wall.
"Bolin, is that you?" she called. To which Pabu immediately squeaked followed by a rather unhelpful 'No', from his owner. "What're you doing?" the Avatar asked.
Seeing the jig was up, Bolin walked out from his hiding spot, attempting to act casual. "Oh, hey, ladies. I was just, uh…I was just looking for Pabu" he said, making a show of looking around calling for his pet.
"He's on your shoulder."
Bolin comically glanced to where Pabu was perched. "Oh, look, there you are. You know, I thought something was chewing on my ear. I'm probably gonna need to get a shot. Pabu has sort of a venom- a venom." Korra just stared, brow raised in confusion at her friend's behavior. "Anyway, so what are you guys doing? You're metalbending over here or something?"
"Want to give it a shot?" Su asked, catching Bolin's not so subtle attempt to disguise his motive.
Bolin's eyes fell. "Nah, it's ok. I mean, only, like, one earthbender in a hundred can metalbend."
"Well, don't believe everything you hear. The only thing limiting you is your attitude."
Helped a little by Su's encouragement Bolin decided that even if he wasn't ready to try himself, he would at least stay and watch. Satisfied, Korra continued her efforts to bend the meteorite, with Su advising she focus on the fine pieces of earth within the metal.
Heeding her words, Korra was overjoyed when the meteorite began to shiver and tremble in her palm before finally taking on the shape of a wave. "I can't believe. I'm metalbending!"
But she wasn't the only one in awe of accomplishment, Bolin stared at her in wonder, "Wow, you picked that up really, really quick" before becoming discouraged. Guess you're that one in a hundred.
Shoulders slumped Bolin wandered off to the other side of the estate, where he found more meteorite pedestals. Not spotting anyone around, Bolin took a meteorite in his hand and attempted to copy what Korra did to bend the metal, but to no avail.
Growing more frustrated by the moment by his failed efforts, Bolin failed to notice Opal's arrival.
"Hey, Bolin!"
"Opal!" startled, Bolin quickly hid the meteorite behind his back. "Oh, wow. You really know how to sneak up on someone."
"What're you doing?" Opal asked, raising a brow at Bolin's odd behavior.
"Oh, nothing, you know, just- Just thinking" Bolin stammered, moving to block Opal's view of the pedestal as he attempted to sneak the meteorite back into place. "about my body and mustaches that I might have in the future."
"You're acting weird again."
Sighing, Bolin relaxed his posture and confessed. "Sorry. I wasn't really thinking about all my mustaches. I'm just- I'm just frustrated. I've been trying to metalbend, and I can't figure it out. Don't tell anyone, ok?"
"Why not?" Opal asked.
"Because it's- it's embarrassing. This isn't the first time I've tried. I mean, I've been wanting to metalbend ever since I heard about Toph. Your grandmother is my biggest hero."
"My mom grew up learning from Toph" said Opal, laying a supportive hand on Bolin's shoulder. "Just go train with her. Stop being so scared."
"You know what? Maybe I am scared, but what about you?" Bolin accused, sensing he wasn't the only one holding back. "I know you want to go to the Northern Air Temple to train with Tenzin, but you haven't done it because you're afraid too."
Opal turned away from Bolin to look out at Zaofu. "You know what? You're right. I do want to go but, I don't want to leave my family and disappoint my mom."
With a soft smile on his face, Bolin playfully nudged Opal. "Look at us…talking about our feelings," the earthbender pulled Opal into a one-arm hug. "supporting each other."
Smiling, Opal returned the embrace. "It's nice."
Encouraged by Opal's support, Bolin returned to the courtyard where Suyin, seated on an earth bench was overseeing Korra's metalbending lesson.
"Congratulations. You're the first metalbending Avatar" she smiled as she watched Korra shapeshift the hunk of meteorite in her hands with ease.
Korra gave a grateful smile just Bolin walked over to speak to Su.
"So, um... I've been thinking, and I'd like to try to learn metalbending" he said nervously. "I mean, I'm sure you have a waiting list or something, like, a couple years, so..."
Getting to her feet, Suyin placed a reassuring hand on Bolin's shoulder. "Let's get started."
But before they could begin, the meteorites all suddenly fell from their podiums, drawing their attention to Naruto and a visibly angry Lin.
"Su, it's time we talked" Lin demanded. Without a word, Naruto moved to stand with Korra and Bolin while, Suyin moved to confront her sister.
"After thirty years, you're finally ready to talk?" Suyin said incredulously.
"When we were in Mom's office that day, you could have taken responsibility for what you did, but instead you stayed quiet and let Mom throw her whole career away."
"Mom didn't throw her career away. She retired the next year. She was a hero."
This proved to be the wrong thing to say, as this only fueled Lin's anger. "You think she wanted to retire? She was so guilt-ridden about what she did to protect you, she didn't feel worthy of her badge."
Suyin sighed. "Look, I admit that I was not a perfect kid and I've made some mistakes in the past, but-"
"You made some mistakes?"
"Lin, Mom and I already talked about this years ago and worked things out. If you had gotten together with us like we'd asked, you would know that I'm a different person now. I've been a different person for a long time."
"You think just because you live in a big, fancy house and have a chef who cooks you fancy food, that you're a different person? Maybe you can fool everyone else, but you can't fool me. I see right through you."
"You know what, Lin? You're the one who hasn't changed" Suyin finally snapped. "You're still a bitter loner who only cares about herself. No wonder Tenzin ended things with you years ago."
And just like that Suyin crossed the line. Furious, Lin shot a chunk of rock at Su, who quickly lift her hand up, letting it smash into pieces against her fist.
"Ok, I guess this is how it's going to be."
Suyin fired three meteorite chunks at Lin, throwing her back. Landing into a roll, Lin quickly got back on her feet and slammed her fist into the ground, sending a series of earth columns at her sister, but Su metelbent a plate from the ground to shield herself.
Countering Su, chucked the plate at Lin, but the chief simply jumped over it. Before firing back with a barrage of earth shards forcing Suyin on the defensive as she dodged from side to side.
"Should I stop them?" Korra asked Naruto and Bolin, as they watched from the sidelines.
"You don't have any siblings. Fighting is all part of the healing process" said Bolin, with Naruto nodding his head in agreement.
"It worked for me and Shukaku" said the Nine-Tails. "That's why I suggested it."
"This was your idea!" Korra immediately turned on the blonde. "I thought we had enough sibling earthquakes this trip!"
"All I said was that she needed to confront Suyin" Naruto shrugged. "It's not my fault they're like me and Shukaku. Besides it's like Bolin said, 'all part of the healing process'."
Korra sighed, exasperated as they went back to watching the dueling Beifongs.
Su and Lin's battle continued to rage through the compound. Leaving the training yard and moving into where Huan was working on his sculptures. The art pieces didn't last though, as Lin metalbent them at Suyin, who redirected it, sending it crashing into a wall. Though admittedly the artist had to admit its ruined form was actually an improvement.
Still it did nothing to slow the warring sisters down as Suyin bent three metal plates from the ground and threw them at Lin, who managed to punch the first two away before taking a hit in the shoulder by the last.
Undeterred, the chief proceeded to chuck more rocks at Su, who continued to duck and weave around. Lin earthbent a sizeable chunk or earth and threw it at Suyin, who metalbent a wall around herself in a protective circle.
Countering she bent the wall around herself and slammed it into Lin, throwing her back into the pavilion, where her nephews and brother-in-law, had run out to investigate all the commotion.
"You get it out of your system?" Suyin snapped at her sister.
"Not quite yet!" Lin earthbent the stairs of the pavilion, lifting it overhead. Not backing down, Suyin quickly met the challenge, lifting mountain of a boulder above her own head. As they charged towards each, suddenly Opal arrived on the scene airbending both chunks of rock away.
"What are you two doing?!" Opal demanded, horrified. "You're sisters! Why would you want to hurt each other?"
Taking her daughter's words to heart, Suyin looked away in shame. While Lin, thoroughly physically and emotionally exhausted, was struggling to catch her breath. As her vision began to darken the last thing, she saw was her niece and sister, before fainting; falling back into Naruto's arms, who appeared behind in a flash of light. Before vanishing again just as quickly.
The next morning, after learning Naruto had put her to bed, Korra, Mako, and Bolin found themselves standing awkwardly outside Lin's door.
"Uh... who's gonna knock?" Korra asked, with each of them hesitant to do so. Not about to volunteer herself, she attempted to push Bolin towards the door, but the earthbender stubbornly refused to budge.
"Oh! No, no, no, no, no, no. Not me. You're the Avatar. Why can't you do it?"
"Uh, I can" she said uncertainly. "But I just thought that you-"
Seeing that neither of them was going to do it. And Naruto having vehemently refused to even join them in their efforts, the task fell to Mako.
Knocking on the door, the firebender listened for any noise inside the room. "Uh, Chief," he called to Lin. "You've been sleeping for sixteen hours. We just wanted to make sure that you're ok."
Suddenly the door opened, catching Mako by surprise as he falls into the room. On the ground he looked up to see Lin dressed in Zaofu robes, stretching and yawning.
"Good morning" she greeted them with a smile, leaving Korra, Mako, and Bolin stunned.
Leaving the trio behind, Lin continued on to the dining room, where she came across Naruto waiting for her, with a glass of green juice. Taking a seat, Lin suspiciously eyed the drink, while the blonde took a sip from his own.
"What's this?" Lin asked.
"Chef gave it to me" said Naruto. "He called it the kalenutsco. It's a mixture of kale, coconut water, and walnuts. It's not bad."
Trying it herself, Lin found she agreed with the blonde's assessment.
"So, you feeling any better?" Naruto asked. he could sense she wasn't as on edge at least.
Lin shrugged. "As good as to be expected."
Though they both knew fighting it out was only a part of the healing process. The next step was the hardest. And as it turned out, Lin was going to get an early start on it, as she noticed Opal looking in from the doorway.
She was about to walk away when Lin, called out "Opal, don't go."
Stopping at her aunt's call, Opal turned to see Lin gesture to the seat beside her. Getting the message, Naruto stood up to leave, giving the young airbender a reassuring smile as he passed. A little taken aback, Opal pensively took a seat.
"Look, I'm just not really comfortable talking about these kinds of things" Lin sais apologetically. "And, well... I wanted to say I'm sorry about the other night.
"It's ok" Opal said meekly. Not exactly helping Lin's guilt.
"Your mother and I have a complicated relationship and-"
"It's probably difficult for you to be here."
Lin gave her niece a smile. "You're a smart young woman and an excellent airbender. I think it would be a wonderful opportunity for you to train with the other airbenders at the Northern Air Temple."
"There's a part of me that wants to go, but I don't want to upset my Mom."
"When I was younger, all I wanted to do was please my mother" Lin confessed, seeing herself in Opal. "I became a Police Chief because I thought it would make her happy, but it didn't. You need to make decisions based on what you want. Don't make the same mistakes I did."
With a smile on her face, Opal got out of her seat and gave her aunt a hug. Her smile growing larger when Lin returned it.
Later Lin could be found looking up at a statue of her mother, when Suyin walked up beside her.
"Opal's decided to go to the Norther Air Temple" she informed her. "I'm guessing you had something to do with her decision."
"Well, I was just-"
"It's ok" Suyin smiled at her usually composed sister's flustering. "I'm glad she was honest with me. I want her to do what makes her happy. Mom gave us too much freedom, but I feel like I've made the mistake of giving Opal too little. I think it's time I let her choose her own way." Su closed her eyes for a moment, preparing herself to say words long overdue. "I'm sorry I gave you such a hard time when we were younger. I can't imagine what my life would've been like if Mom hadn't sent me away, if I had stayed in the city."
"You'd probably be in prison" Lin said dryly.
Suyin chuckled. "You're probably right. Mako told me that you're an excellent Police Chief. Republic City is lucky to have you. I know Mom is proud."
Lin said nothing at that. Not ready to confront those feelings just yet.
"Can we move on? I'd love for you to be a part of my life again." Suyin said sincerely. "
There's plenty of space for you in the house, and the kids would love having their aunt around. I do need a co-director for my new dance performance."
"Whoa. Slow down" Lin cut her sister off. "How about for now, I just promise not to show up at your house and attack you again" she offered with a smile.
"Deal" Suyin offered her hand.
Accepting the handshake, Lin was surprised to find she was genuinely relieved and happy to have made peace with her sister.
*Outskirts of Republic City*
Hidden in the hills outside the capital of the United Republic, a strange group of four were gathered around a campfire.
""We should've grabbed one of those cops" said a member of the group, Ming-Hua. An armless woman with long dark hair, using two water tentacles as prosthesis. "Maybe they know something about where our target's hiding."
"Could be anywhere" agreed another member of the group, Ghazan. A man with ragged long dark hair, a thin mustache, and dressed in Earth Kingdom green.
"We'll find them" the third member of their group, P'Li, said confidently. A woman sporting long dark hair, braided into a long ponytail and an eye tattoo in the center of her forehead. "It's just a matter of time."
"They're with the Metal Clan" As one the other three turned to the final member of their group, and leader, a man with a powerful presence sporting a close shaven head; Zaheer.
It was time to resume their hunt.
