"Miss Jones, may I ask what you are using NCIS resources for?" Hetty Lange asked with deceptive softness. "I know there isn't a case that requires you to be here atβ¦" she paused to glance at her watch, "three in the morning."
Without taking her eyes off the screen, Nell answered, "I'm really sorry, Hetty, but I couldn't wait to ask for permission. My baby cousin is missing and I have to help the cops find her before something even worse happens to her."
"What is the matter?" Hetty inquired, going into immediate 'protect her family' mode β even if it was extended family.
"My aunt and uncle were murdered last night, and Buffy witnessed it. She had been out with some friends and was coming home late when she saw the attack through a window. Fortunately, she ducked into the bushes as the killers left the house, so it's unlikely that they know she saw them." Nell's voice choked up, but she forced herself to continue, "It was a brutal murder scene. They both had ancient railroad spikes driven into their chests β like what you'd see in a Dracula movie or something.
"Buffy had just enough presence of mind to call 911 before she went into shock. The police found her hiding in a corner by the front door, curled up and crying as she stared at their bodies. After her initial statement about what happened, she went catatonic for a few hours.
"Then something changed in her and she caught her watcher off-guard with a punch to the jaw. The video camera caught what she said as she walked out of the precinct. 'I am the Chosen One. The one girl in all the world. I alone can fight the vampires, demons and forces of darkness. To stop their spread of evil in the world. I am the Slayer.' The police are worried she's going to go on a killing spree with the same MO of how her parents died.
"I'm afraid that if the wrong person finds her, somebody will be hurt before she can get the help she needs," Nell concluded, looking at her boss for the first time.
It took less than a second for Hetty to make her decision. "I'll call the team and 'ask' them to help out with your search. I can't make it an official case, but I have no doubts they'll be willing to help."
A/N: Yes, it draws inspiration from the episode in season 6, but with an obvious change to serve as the trigger for her psychosis.
