Chapter 13

Emma had aged to be a wonderful girl, always polite and thoughtful—never unpleasant. She had been upset about living with her godmother for the entire week at first, but she quickly learned to get used to it because she was provided a fresh set of parents. Not only did they answer her questions, but they provided her with an environment that encouraged her curiosity, not repressed it. She was truly a happy child, which Regina was so thankful for.

It was Emma's thirteenth birthday. Regina had made Sydney Glass get all of the "411" on what 13-year-old girls desired on their birthdays and put a plan in action for Emma. After all, she was a princess. Emma had insisted that she not do too much for her birthday because Regina had a bad habit of being "extra", as Emma had called it. The Queen just simply wanted the best for the princess.

The Friday morning beforehand, Regina, Graham, and Ruby met at the manor to decorate for the party. They all agreed it was best to take place at Regina's home since it was the largest and closest to all of Emma's friends. They spent hours blowing up balloons, making goodie-bags, and wrapping Emma's presents. When they were finished, Regina's home looked like the perfect place for a princess' party.

"Do you think this is enough?" Both Ruby and Graham looked at Regina so emphatically that she didn't even need to hear a verbal answer to that question. "Point taken," She muttered.

The next afternoon, Regina woke up ready for the party, having had a full night's rest to contemplate the coming day. She could feel the excitement in her bones; making Emma smile always made her smile. Emma knew about her birthday party, but what she didn't know was that her parents and Regina had gone all out to make sure that it was a birthday she'd never forget.

When Emma woke up, her parents entered her room with a giant birthday cake that had thirteen candles on it. She told them they need not make a fuss over her birthday, but they insisted because she was their one and only.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you" they sang.

Emma beamed as they approached her and when they ended the song, she actually wished for nothing. She had everything she could ever want in a family, and she was so lucky to have Regina as a best friend. All her friends she'd made in school were amazing as well. Emma was a perfectly happy person.

Wrapping her arms around her parents, she kissed them both, "I love you both. Thank you for making every day of my life better than the last." And she meant that. The days she'd spent with Snow and Charming had been the worst days of her life. She felt as if they'd drained her intellectual energy and forced her into a cage when she lived with them. She felt so free, in such a way that she'd never felt when she was a child.

Ruby, knowing exactly what Emma was feeling looked her in the eye and said, "Emma, you never have to thank us for loving you," Graham nodded in agreement then continued, "You are so easy to love. Everything about loving you is so effortless that we couldn't resist if we tried. If anything, we should thank you for making our lives so purposeful and special. We love you, Emma."

The happy family hugged for some time and then Emma was tickled out of her bed so that she could get ready for her big day. After brushing her teeth and washing her face, she put on a beautiful yellow dress that Regina had made special just for her and took her hair out of the braids her mom had done for her the night before. She sighed. No matter how hard she tried, her curls would never be waves. Brushing through her thick, golden locks, she applied some mousse and then went to put on her shoes.

"Emma, we're going to be late!" Hearing her mom honk, she rushed out of the house to get into the car. Buckling her seatbelt, she watched as the forests around her home turned into stores and as the stores turned into government buildings. Soon, she was at her other home and she could already tell she was going to have an amazing day because of all the decorations outside her house.

Not waiting for her parents, Emma ran into the mansion to be greeted by a bunch of people screaming, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMMA!" Regina, along with all her friends from school and around town stood in her living room wishing her a happy birthday. Emma had to think about a scary clown to keep from crying. Her mother didn't believe in celebrating birthdays. She'd said that the only birthday celebration that Emma would have would be her wedding when she was of age.

Not wasting any time, Emma went about hugging everyone who came. When she finally got to Regina she said, "You're the best. You always go all out for me even though I have nothing to offer you in return."

It was then that the Queen kneeled, so she could look Emma in the eyes. "Emma, you have made my life brighter than it's ever been. You chased out the darkness that was holding me hostage. You helped me to become just Regina and for that I can never repay you." Wiping away a stray tear, she smiled, "I have a surprise for you in your room, why don't you bring it downstairs for us all to see."

Emma could feel the excitement turn to goosebumps. Whenever Regina said she had a surprise it was big. Nodding, she ran upstairs to her room and slowly opened the door, unsure of what it could be. Before she could see the surprise that was waiting in the box on her bed, she heard the door slam.

"Hello Emma."

Startled by how sudden it all happened, Emma grabbed her chest, breathing rapidly. "Oh, hello Killian. Why'd you close the door?" She didn't understand why he felt the need to close her bedroom door seeing as they were already alone upstairs.

The older boy stalked towards her and placed his hand on her hip. "I'm sorry love, I didn't mean to scare you. I was just hoping to wish you a happy birthday and maybe give you a present."

Emma tensed under his hand. Pushing him away she said, "No Killian. I'm fine. Can you just go back downstairs with everyone else?" She clearly did not want anything to do with this boy; she didn't understand why he wouldn't just leave her alone.

Not being one to take a hint, he moved in on her. When she started to back away, he forcefully grabbed her by the back of the head and forced their lips together. When Emma tried to pull away he held her tighter, causing her to lose her balance and fall on her bed.

Downstairs, Regina had realized that Emma had been gone for too long. She knew the girl would love her new puppy, but she also sensed that something was wrong. Turning to Red and Graham, she said, "I'm going to check on Emma, she's been upstairs for a while." The two simply waved her off, not thinking anything of it besides her wanting alone time with her new puppy.

When Regina was walking to Emma's room, she heard cries and she started to run towards her door. Met with the sight of Killian forcing himself on her dear Emma nearly made her explode with rage. "What the HELL do you think you are doing?"

At the sound of Regina's voice, Killian quickly got off of Emma. "I'm sorry Madam Mayor, Emma made me—" SMACK!

Before he could even finish his sentence, he was stunned into silence as Regina's open palm met his face, followed by another. She grabbed the boy by his collar, looking him dead in the eyes to make sure he understood what she was about to say. "Should you find yourself anywhere near my Emma again I will cut your hand off. Do you hear me? They will call you Hook."

Stupidly, he replied, "Are you threatening me?"

The Evil Queen smiled, flashing her pearly whites. "Of course not dear, I am making you a promise. So much as think about Emma and I will chop you up like a cow's liver and feed you to Emma's new dog. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

Hearing the commotion, Ruby and Graham came running into the room. "Regina what is going on?!"

Seeing a distraught Emma, Ruby ran to her to comfort her while Graham took Killian out of Regina's grasp and shook him to death. "What. Did. You. Do.", He asked in a low voice.

Overcome with terror, Regina spoke for him, "I walked in to find him forcing himself on Emma. He tried to lie and say she made him do it. The fact that he was on top of her in her bed with the door closed says otherwise."

Graham brought back his fist to hit the teenager when Regina grabbed his arm. "Wait. The mayor and the sheriff assaulting a fifteen-year-old? This won't look good. Take him downtown, where he will be charged with attempted rape." Graham smiled. People convicted of violent crimes in Storybrooke were placed in a dirty, dark mental facility where they received 0 human contact.

Taking the boy out of the room, Regina turned to Emma. "Emma, I am so sorry. I never meant for this to happen to you. Are you alright?"

Emma was just happy all he'd tried to do was kiss her. Nodding, she pulled Regina in for a hug. "So… you said I had a dog?"

Smiling, Regina was happy Emma could still be excited even after all that had happened. She went over to her bed and opened the box. Out jumped a beautiful, white Pomeranian puppy. Emma squealed and took the puppy into her arms. "Oh my god, how'd you know?"

Ruby and Regina looked at Emma incredulously. "Emma, you've only been asking for one for months, emailing us pictures of puppies and mentioning them every other second."

Emma laughed, "You're right, maybe I did mention it quite a bit." Her laughter only doubled in intensity when she heard Regina say "A bit…" under her breath sarcastically. "Is it a boy or a girl?"

"A boy" they said in unison.

Thinking for a second, she said "I think I'll name him Fluffy."

Biting back another sarcastic comment, Regina smiled, "Great! How about we bring Fluffy downstairs, so your friends can see?"

The three went downstairs and celebrated Emma's birthday for the rest of the day. It was by no means perfect, but it meant the world to her that Regina and her parents had spent so much time trying to make sure it was perfect. Nothing—not even Killian Jones could ruin her day because she was surrounded by the most amazing people and she was oh-so loved.
