Loki stared down at the peaceful face of the baby sleeping in the crib. Herald James Potter was what he and Lily had decided to name their son. He'd wanted Herald's last name be Lokison (as it should be) not Potter, but Lily said that would cause "undue confusion" because Loki's Midgardian name was James Potter and very few people knew his true identity. So he reluctantly agreed that it made more sense for Herald or Harry, as Lily insisted on calling him, to be called Potter for now. A small noise drew him out of his thoughts.

'What was…Oh'.

Herald had shifted in his sleep partially dislodging his blanket. His tiny face was scrunched up and he was making little snuffing whines in his sleep. Loki reached over and tucked him back in returning him to his peaceful sleep. Running a gentle hand over his sons soft tuft of baby hair, Loki remembered what had led him here.

Dumbledore had been over earlier that evening to inform them about a prophecy that had made Harry a target for the dark wizard calling himself Voldemort because it said Harry, or Neville Longbottom, had the power to vanquish the dark lord. Dumbledore was certain that Voldemort would be coming after the children and Loki would do everything he could to keep that mad man away from his son. Loki swore to protect Harry, he may not be one to fight with a sword ( or hammer in the case of his brother Thor) but he had his ways. That's what he was currently doing in Harry's room, thinking of a way to ensure his son would be safe. As a god Loki was forbidden to directly change the course of the mortal world and he was sure that going out and killing this dark lord who was in the process of conquering wizarding Europe was doing just that, even if it was to protect his son. That's why Loki gives thanks to what ever deity is responsible for loopholes. While Loki couldn't kill the dark lord because of the prophecy he could help ensure that Harry does in the future. And even though he couldn't just bestow invulnerability or immortality (because Harry was currently mortal) on a midgardian with out Odin's approval Harry was only partly midgardian, he was also partly asgardian. There Loki found his solution which also happens to be known as applesauce, golden applesauce.

It took some time and a lot of research to make sure it would work, but a month later when Harry ate his lunch Loki's plan was put into action. Loki had managed to sneak back into Asgard via one of his secret passageways some years back and while there he stole a golden apple or three that could be used to grant immortality to mortals and some other stuff he thought may come in handy later. When he got back to Midgard he hid his spoils in a heavily warded trunk until he needed them. Now he was eternally grateful that his past self had made that trip. Loki had turned a golden apple into one of Harry's favorite foods... applesauce. ( Loki didn't really know how to make apple sauce so he just took the core out of the apple and stuck it in a blender till it looked about right). At lunch Loki gave Harry the magic golden apple mush immortality sauce. Harry loved it and happily ate the whole dish. Surprising Loki when he didn't throw it around. Just as Harry finished Lily walked into the kitchen.

"Do you think it would be strange if Harry still wore a Halloween costume tomorrow even though he isn't going trick-or-treating?" She asked coming over to stand by him and the joyfully squealing Harry who was reaching for her.

She bent over and pulled him out of his highchair, setting him on her hip before continuing.

"We have that really cute costume for him and with the way he's growing there's no way it'll fit next year. I'd be a shame to waste it."

That was when Loki realized maybe he should have talked to Lily about making Harry immortal first.

'Oh well' he thought, 'too late now, all I can do is sit and wait to see if it worked if not Lily will never know. If it did work… well I'll cross that bridge when I get there'.
