"Amelia! Are you almost ready? Come on, we have to go." Arizona peered into Amelia's bedroom. "Amelia?"
The other woman sat on the edge of her bed, her eyes red and filled with tears.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Arizona approached the bed, sitting down next to the other woman. Amelia took a moment to compose herself before meeting the blonde's concerned eyes.
"I'm sorry. I know today's supposed to be the happiest day of my life and everything, but..." Her voice trailed off and she sighed, struggling to continue.
"You miss Derek," Arizona finished for her.
Amelia nodded. "After my father died, Derek promised himself he'd always protect me. He was the one who took care of me when my mother couldn't, the one who held my hand when we crossed the street, taught me how to ride a bike, watched me grow up..." she paused and looked up at the other woman. "I just always thought he'd be here today, to watch me get married. I thought he'd be the one to walk me down the aisle... I never once considered the possibility that he wouldn't be here for this."
Arizona studied the other woman's face, sighing and moving closer to her. "I know," she whispered, wrapping an arm around Amelia's shoulders, the brunette leaning into her as she fought back tears.
"I know, because I said the exact same thing on my wedding day. To Mark, actually." The blonde smiled sadly at the memory, and Amelia turned her head to look at her. "My brother, Tim, he... he was the first person I came out to. And when I did, he told me, 'I'm gonna dance so hard at your wedding.' And then... well, he died. And the bottom fell out of my world. I stood in my room, staring at this beautiful white dress, and all I could think about was how Tim wasn't going to be at my wedding. He was missing it, and I felt sad, and scared, and alone on what was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. So, I get it. I know you're scared, and devastated, and you have a right to be. That's normal."
She paused to catch Amelia's eyes. "But you're strong, Amelia, you're the strongest person I know. So you can do this. I know you can. For Derek. He'd want you to be happy today, and you deserve to be happy today. I know it's painful to think about, to think that he's not here to share this with you. But he would be so, so proud of you... so you should do this. For him."
Amelia nodded, taking the other woman's hands as she pulled her off the bed, and wrapped her arms tightly around Arizona's torso.
"Thank you," she whispered, sincerely.
"Of course. Now go change. Your soon-to-be husband is waiting."
