Chapter: Feeding the Wolves

And here's part 2...

The car pulled up to a metal and glass building. There was no logo, name or plaque that Rhydian could see.

"Come on, time to go inside." The driver got out and before Rhydian was ready, the back door opened.

Rhydian drew a breath and stepped out. From where the building sat, there was the twinkle of lights and the far off echo of the city noise.

"Change your mind?"

Rhydian looked at the were-driver, saw the smirk and felt a flash of annoyance.

Had he changed his mind?

About walking into a building full of werewolves? Of seeing Fæble again after that almost kiss and knowing what they were meant to be? Or maybe the were was talking about the almost certain death that was looming over them if Shannon kept digging into the Justÿce wolves …

Rhydian strode forward. The doors opened automatically and the scents of other werewolves caught him by surprise. He wasn't used to having so many from different species in one place surrounding him. All he'd ever known were the wolfbloods, tame and wild.

"Walk around, just don't make enemies of the packs." The driver walked past, gave Rhydian one last look over his shoulder and laughed.

"…enemies?" Rhydian frowned after the were but then, the first meeting with… other species of werewolves hadn't really been all that friendly. So maybe the warning was fair…

He walked around the first floor, took the drink a human waiter offered him and stared after the guy. He'd been told by Galen the packs weren't just about werewolves, that they adopted humans in, even mated to them in some cases. Here was the proof, as he looked around and paid attention to the wait staff… all of them were human.

And then he bumped into another wolf. "Oh, sorry! I…" Rhydian found a redheaded werewolf in a t-shirt smiling back at him. "Uh…" he wasn't sure if maybe there was a different dress code – a more casual one that Rhydian hadn't been told about.

"Hey."

"…h-hey…?..." Rhydian looked around again then back at the were still smiling amiably at him. "Uh, no suit?"

"Nah," he shrugged. "Not a suit kind of guy."

"Wolf, you mean." Rhydian offered a smile in return and hoped the were didn't get offended.

"Right." He nodded. "I'm Oz."

"Oh, yeah, Rhydian Morris." He started to hold out his hand but then dropped it. He wasn't sure if that's how they were supposed to greet each other and the more he stood in the middle of all these weres, the more uncomfortable Rhydian became.

"Dude, relax." Oz scanned the crowd of weres he'd been sent to meet by the NWC. "Its just like a party."

"Yeah, this…I've never been to one like this before." Rhydian confessed. School parties with other kids, yes but never with other wolves all dressed in suits and ties. Even the charity event had not been so grand as the Lycosura.

"Me either." Oz admitted and Rhydian envied the wolf his calm.

"Is this the first one you've been to, then?" Rhydian hadn't considered there would have been other wolves like him.

Oz nodded, smiled again and scanned the crowd. He'd have to give a report once he was back at the castle. The whole point of this was to create relationships with the other weres so as to avoid another … 'war'. The NWC couldn't afford to be fighting skirmishes with other supernaturals when they were trying to stop the apocalypse next year.

"Thought I was the only one." Rhydian said into the long silence. He got a half smile and nod but nothing else. And the silence stretched again-

"Dude, you're actually here?"

Rhydian turned to the familiar voice and found Steel grinning. He was in a dark suit, not exactly black but close enough and the material had a slight shine to it.

"You're the were I've been wanting to meet." Steel pointed at Oz who just arched a red eyebrow but said nothing. "Cool shirt. Never heard of the band, they any good?"

Oz shrugged. "Yeah."

Steel and Rhydian waited but the were didn't say anything else. Again.

"Dude," Steel laughed. "My Dad's gonna want to talk to you again. Hope you know how to put together more than one word answers cus…" he shook his head; the little wolf was too mellow. "Come on." Steel started walking and grabbed both weres. "I'll introduce you to other weres. Help you guys make friends."

Rhydian glanced towards Oz but he didn't look the least concerned.

Peter made sure they weren't too far from the Alpha and his daughter. He'd watched the Quileute arrive with his half-breed mate and be sent off. Much to Fæble's annoyance.

When Thalia had remembered the approaching Lycosura, Peter had begun to plant the idea of sending Derek, along with his favorite uncle, so that the Beacon Hills pack Alpha could stay and take care of the Hunters making a nuisance of themselves. And once at the Lycosura, there was plenty of opportunity for Peter to build relationships for whatever need arose in the future. His…

"She may need you to intervene." Peter nodded towards the pair trying to look as though they weren't having an argument.

"Uhm… I think… she's upset…" Derek frowned but he couldn't be sure considering Fæble tended to keep her emotions hidden. He got a harsh 'nudge' from Peter and glared at his uncle. "I cant go over there."

"Of course you can." Peter smiled and shoved his nephew again. "Now put your other foot forward and keep going." He watched Derek glower but the teen finally walked over to the pair. With Peter a few paces behind.

It was Fæble who turned her attention towards the Hale's. "Then its pretty convenient there's two Hale wolves at this Lycosura."

"Fæble…" Galen warned before facing the Hale's and directing his attention to Peter. "I want to hear more about the Hunters in Beacon Hills."

"Are we going to intervene there?" Fæble demanded. "Since you're all about taking out these threats to The Pack. Its not just a backwater teenager, too nosy for her own good, that has you concerned-."

"Any threat to The Pack will be addressed. It doesn't matter how insignificant you believe the threat to be." Galen's eyes glowed a soft amber. "We do not allow any threat to grow."

"We are happy to accept the invitation." Peter offered a genial smile. He placed his hand on Derek's shoulder and turned to his nephew. "My sister is honored to have Derek here considered worthy of-."

Fæble turned towards Peter, her eyes glowing brighter with each word that came out of his mouth. She already knew what every wolf at the Lycosura wanted from her. They just hadn't been stupid enough to actually say it out loud. "I'll gladly show you-."

Derek moved towards her without really thinking about it. He couldn't really say why he did it and Fæble… her surprise just made him grin.

"…maybe Derek and Fæble should spend some time…" Peter smiled at Derek. The kid took the hint but it was Fæble who grabbed his hand and started walking away before her Father could stop them. "…getting to know each other."

Peter watched them go. A little surprised that Derek would actually kiss the girl and in the presence of The Alpha. Maybe things would work out better than he hoped… In the meantime, Peter turned to Galen. "These Hunters…they've come from France…"

Fæble dropped Derek's hand as soon as they reached the terrace overlooking the garden that edged the forest. She tuned and smacked Derek, still careful not to hit him too hard but just enough it smarted.

"Ow!" Derek rubbed the side of his head, frowning. "I was just-."

"—taking it literally." Fæble cut him off. She huffed with annoyance when he smiled sheepishly at her and turned away. "I'm supposed to make a choice tonight." Her frustration colored each word.

He moved beside her, both staring at the garden. "So… have you decided?"

"I cant." Fæble whispered. She couldn't help sounding miserable and that pissed her off. "I wont. No." and that was final. They couldn't force her to claim their mate.

Derek drew in a breath. "You're so stubborn, Fæble." He shook his head and glanced towards her.

"You saw her!" Fæble exclaimed. "She was…broken. He did that to her." She shook her head. That was not going to be her future and the only way Fæble knew of avoiding it was by denying the wolf its mate.

"You're not your Mom, Fæble." He watched her scowl, nails digging into the stone ledge.

"Of course I am." Fæble snapped. "I'm already-. Forget it." She blew out a frustrated breath and started turning away when Derek grabbed her arm.

"You're stronger." Derek moved so he stood in front of her. "You never let the wolf control you." That was something he admired about her.

"Do you know how hard that is?" Fæble whispered. "Always being on guard? Having to push him out all the time! I cant even… cant concentrate… cant sleep…"

"Wow," Derek couldn't remember ever seeing Fæble so open about her feelings. She was always reserved, always careful to keep her expression blank or shuttered. She didn't easily open up so this was strange and Derek realized this was something that was hurting his friend. "You got it bad." He forced a smiled and teasing tone to his voice.

Fæble rolled her eyes and smacked his chest. "Shut up." She almost laughed, and she realized that's what Derek was after. She hit him again and got a pained laugh for her trouble. "Its really not funny, Derek."

Fæble crossed her arms and turned her attention back to the garden. Derek slowly turned with her. He was taller, even with her heels… "You should practice."

"What?" she frowned as she glanced at him.

"Kissing." Derek didn't look at her. He was trying to keep a straight face and wondering if she'd smack him again. "I'll even help."

Fæble let out a pent up breath, confused about the change in topic and then kind of amused, which made her feel slightly better. "Oh my God… Cant you be serious?" she turned away to cover the laugh she couldn't hold in. "I'm not kissing you." She threw over her shoulder.

Derek laughed too and followed her towards the stairs leading down to the garden. He turned so his back was against the balustrade and sighed. "I don't think I want to find her."

Fæble could see he wasn't joking. With another sigh, she moved closer and leaned on his side. "It'll be different for you, Derek."

"Just because I'm not part Quileute doesn't mean its easier." Derek glanced down at her.

"No," Fæble agreed. "But you get to fall in love." Ever since she met Rhydian, Fæble had been wishing she could be a normal girl, able to fall in love with whomever she wanted.

Derek chuckled. "How is that any easier?"

"Better than being a slave." Fæble muttered. "That's what I'd be…"

Derek shook his head. "Nah, you're not the type."

Fæble didn't like the funk she was dragging Derek into. She took a breath and stepped away from the balustrade to face Derek. "Fine."

Derek raised an eyebrow wondering what she meant when she stepped towards him, hands clasped in front of her.

"Well," she stared at him. "Come on, Obi-Wan. Get to the … you know." She couldn't help her slight blush.

"You mean, Yoda." Derek corrected as he stood straight.

"Ew!" Fæble made her gross face. "Little green alien, really?"

"Right." Derek realized that wasn't the visual anyone would want. He leaned towards her but Fæble suddenly leaned away.

"Whoa there." She took a small step away. "Instructions, please. You don't just…kiss."

"Well, yeah." Derek frowned then shrugged. "But if you want, then just do what I do." Again he leaned towards her only for Fæble to take another step back.

"Uh, how does that help me?" then she frowned and stepped towards him. "Who said you're better at it than I am?"

"Better at what?"

Fæble immediately turned to the familiar voice, grinning. "Dyson!" she ran to the were and jumped into his open arms happy to see him.

Dyson picked her up, turning his face to accept the expected peck on the cheek Fæble always insisted to greet him with.

Derek watched them, just a little disappointed their 'lesson' was interrupted before it actually got started. "Just so you know," he said to the were. "She's being difficult."

"So," Dyson set her down still smiling. "As usual."

Fæble smirked, a finger pointed towards a retreating Derek. "He's trying to kiss me."

Dyson turned to look at Derek, who suddenly felt very uncomfortable. "Has he…?"

Derek hooked a thumb over his shoulder. "…think I heard Peter…"

Fæble watched Derek beat a hasty retreat and laughed. She knew how intimidating Dyson looked, especially if he wasn't smiling. That always worked in favor of The Pack Alpha…

"You ran him off." Fæble smiled up at him.

"That seemed to be the point." Dyson picked her up with ease and strode to the balustrade where he set her down. "Now, we're sort of at eye level." He flicked her nose and watched her face scrunch up.

"I'll get taller." Fæble assured.

"No," Dyson shook his head. "You wont." It didn't matter if her wolf was bigger than his, in her human form, she was a tiny thing. He remembered meeting her for the first time, the little pup trying to take bite out of his leg, growling like she was full grown… it was the cutest thing.

"So they called you in as well." Fæble sighed. She swung her legs over the balustrade and leaned back into Dyson.

"I volunteered." That hadn't gone over well with the Fey. They didn't want to lose him and if Fæble decided to make a claim on him…there was nothing the Fey could do.

"Will they mind?" Fæble tilted her head up trying to look at him but all she got was more sky and stars.

"You mean, its me?" Dyson leaned around to look at her. She was already shaking her head in denial.

"You're in love, Dyson." She smiled at him. "I wouldn't take you from her."

Dyson sighed. He'd been worried, knowing it was a possibility that Fæble could choose him. And he wouldn't deny her; he'd already promised the little pup a long time ago he would protect her. "Go with your heart on this one, little pup."

Fæble vehemently shook her head. "Nope. No way." She sat forward and glared at the garden. "Not happening, so don't even. My heart isn't getting a choice."

"Of course it does." Dyson moved to the side and leaned out so he was able to look at her.

"My wolf imprinted." Fæble tossed him a glare. "My heart just got squashed. And my head is trying to figure out this mess and driving me friggin' nuts!"

"Stop thinking." Dyson ordered. "There's nothing to figure out. Don't fight your wol-."

"Are you friggin' kidding me?" Fæble jerked around, ignoring the wolf reaching an arm out just to make sure she didn't topple off into the bushes. "He broke my Mom, Dyson! I'm a ¼ less Quileute than she was and she died miserable because he put her aside for that human."

"His mate." Dyson knew its not what she wanted to hear but it didn't change what was.

"Whatever." She crossed her arms knowing exactly what she looked like; a bratty little pup having a fit.

"So," Dyson sighed at the stubborn jut of her chin, knowing there was no sense in continuing that way. "You'll pick one of those?" he glanced over his shoulder at the wolves assembled. They all knew what they were doing there… "Maybe the Hale's are the answer." He shook his head and straightened. "Or me."

Fæble looked at him in surprise. She'd never considered Dyson, not really and she'd already told her Father not to bother with the Hale's but… "Are you volunteering again?" before he could answer she shook her head. "Why did you?"

"Because I'm your friend, too." Dyson placed his hand on her shoulder, pretty much covered her back.

"And you'd let me stay." Fæble let out a heavy breath.

"You know most of the others wouldn't." Dyson pointed out. "They'd demand you leave with them."

"They can try." Fæble growled, glaring towards the wolves inside. Those wolves wanted her simply because she would lead the packs. Whichever one she chose would have absolute say in her absence and there were a few weres willing to kill their Alpha for control of the packs.

"Down, little wolf." Dyson smiled, he shook his head and changed the subject. "So why is Hale trying to kiss you?"

"Hmph," Fæble turned her nose up. She tore her eyes away from the open doors and the wolves inside. Wolves her Father brought out to make her choose… "Says he'd be happy to give me 'lessons'."

Dyson chuckled. "Well, it's a good line…" still, she didn't offer more and he was curious. "Alright, who is it? Your mate…"

"He's not!" Fæble denied, glaring up at him.

"You imprinted." Dyson pointed out.

"So what? I can… I'll figure something out!" she huffed, but seeing Dyson trying to hide his amused smile only made her angry. She threw her leg over the balustrade and tried to hop off but he moved into her way.

"Fæble, there's nothing to figure out." He cupped her face in one of his hands and made her look at him. He could see she was miserable, and angry… and a bit panicked.

Rhydian caught her scent and broke away from Steel and Oz. He wove through the crowd of weres barely paying them any attention when a big were got in his way. He tried to move around but another were in a leather trench and long hair stood next to the first one. Rhydian glared at them both, eyes slightly yellow. They were keeping him from her and his wolf wasn't happy about it.

"The pup is annoyed, Ansel." Lucian's lightly mocking tone only made Rhydian more angry. He realized that seemed to be the point.

"Could be, we are standing in the way of…"

"True love?" Lucian sort of joked. He'd never had an imprint, didn't know what the pup or Fæble were feeling, but Lucian always felt the loss of his one love every moment of every day. That was a pain he wouldn't wish on them…

"The kind only a were would feel." Ansel replied with his eyes on Rhydian. "A bond deeper than the flesh, than blood…"

"Is he worthy, do you think?" Lucian flicked his eyes over Rhydian once more before turning his head towards Ansel.

"She's mine!" Rhydian's growl drew both weres attention and for just a second he felt a smidge of fear of the two alphas.

Lucian's slow smile gave way to a laugh. "Run along, then pup." Both weres stepped aside allowing Rhydian a path through. "We'll see what our alpha princess has to say about your claim."

Ansel only shook his head. From what he'd seen tonight and what Lucian had told him of Fæble… the pup would not have an easy task in getting her to accept, even with her wolf wanting the pup. Faeble was stronger than the weres gave her credit.

"I sort of want to go watch this…" Lucian grinned but allowed Ansel to drag him off for another drink as Rhydian brushed past them.

He stopped just outside, staring at the huge were touching Fæble. Something inside snapped and Rhydian couldn't stop from wolfing out. He didn't see or hear anything other than Fæble as she blocked him from the were.

"So this is the pup." Dyson grinned as the small wolf tried to dodge around Fæble.

"Damn it, why are you laughing?!" Faeble glared over her shoulder. "No!" She gave a quick swipe of her hand as Rhydian made another attempt to get around her.

"Just let the little pup through, Fæble." Dyson grinned and stepped around her. "I promise not to hurt your mate-."

"He is NOT!" Faeble yelled. She was furious and at the sound of her denial, Rhydian turned to her.

There was a soft whine and then the wolf morphed into the boy in the suit standing before her. He took a step towards her but stopped at the slight rise if her chin.

Dyson quietly walked back into the main building. He stayed by the doors and made sure the pups weren't interrupted.

"Faeble -."

"You and your wolf don't get to lay a claim on me." Faeble cut him off. She glared at him, hands fisting at her sides.

"I'm… I know we belong together. I feel it." Rhydian walked towards her even as she turned away and headed for the stairs leading down to the gardens.

"That's your wolf being horny." Faeble threw over her shoulder. "Go ask your tame. I bet she'll be happy to explain it and then some." She hated that her words held the ring of jealousy and it didn't help that her wolf wanted to tear that tame pup to pieces just at the thought of them together-. "Go away!"

Faeble stumbled as she turned to yell at Rhydian. He was much closer than she'd thought and easily caught her. There was a soft snap and Fæble knew she'd be going barefoot the rest of the party. But that was a passing thought compared to the feel of his arms and then the touch of his lips on hers. Fæble couldn't think fast enough and her wolf took control. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and kissed him back.
