Her fingers curled, grasping her bedsheets as the scientist stared out into space. She groaned and rolled over to the her other side as a ray of daylight illuminated her room. She thought about the other night. It didn't make sense. Cosima brushed her fingers across her lip. Delphine never had kissed her like that- with such bittersweet longing. She could imagine only one word those lips were trying to convey. Adieu.
Her mind drifted to current events. They were on the breaking point of developing a cure, Ferdinand became their ally, and they were up against the Freaky-Leekies who had a radical self-evolution agenda. What was Delphine up to, and where was she going? The geek monkey perched from her bed as her phone vibrated twice on the nightstand. She reached for her glasses and sat on her bed as she read a text from Shay.
I think we need to talk.
Her phone vibrated again.
Cosima, I'm sorry. Just meet me at my place when you're ready.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard, desperate to move away from her thoughts as she responded.
Yeah, yeah I'll be there in a bit. See you then. Cosima winced at her unguarded reply. Shay, despite her faults, still meant something and Cosima valued her companionship.
She tossed her phone to the side and took a deep breath. Cosima's head ached. She shut her eyes as she yawned, stretching out her arms to loosen her shoulder muscles. The woman needed to appear somewhat presentable if she was going to make up with Shay.
Cosima knocked on Shay's door, deciding to be polite instead of using her spare key. It was the least she could do after hypocritically accusing the other woman for keeping secrets. She lied to and kept things from Shay on a near daily basis- from her relationship with Sarah to her activities involving the rest of the Clone Club. She also nearly had Shay tortured after finding out about her past with the military and the paranoia they'd faced with Castor. It really didn't earn brownie points when Shay found out Cosima was partially responsible for her encounter with Delphine.
Cosima caught her breath when Shay opened the door. She remembered how to breathe when Shay motioned her inside. She'd barely taken her first steps into the apartment when she spotted the DYAD card sitting on the living room table.
"What's this about, Shay?" she asked, guarded in her tone. Shay was silent as she took a seat and picked up the card, flipping it over to the back. Cosima inched closer to see the golden lettering. She inhaled once she recognized the handwriting.
"324B21. What is that, some sort of file number I get to read to know what's going on?" Shay turned her head to look at Cosima. The clone lowered her head, stung by the level distrust present in Shay's voice. "Delphine said you could tell me everything, if you wanted to. Said we fit."
"Wait," said Cosima, her hands outstretched as she processed what Shay had said. She didn't expect that Delphine would actually visit Shay after what she'd done. "When did you see Delphine?"
"Yesterday- she came by around late afternoon. I told her to leave but…" Shay hesitated. "She seemed desperate and genuine enough that I heard her out." Cosima felt like everything clicked into place in that moment. She felt her phone buzz and she mouthed in apology to Shay after she read the Caller ID.
"Hey Sarah," she greeted as Shay raised an eyebrow at her.
"Oi Cos, where are you?"
"I'm at...Look, I'll send you directions. There's someone I want you to meet."
"We just heard from Ferdinand that-"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Cosima interrupted as her chest tightened. She could really go for a joint now. "I know." Silence filled the other side of the line as Cosima sent Sarah Shay's address.
"I'll be there in a bit. And Cos?" Sarah's voice softened.
"Hmm...yeah?" she replied.
"I'm sorry about all the times I doubted her. She did so many things...for all of us."
"Yeah." Her voice noticeably cracked. "See you soon, Sarah." She ended the conversation before the Brit could say another word. She glanced down at her phone for a few seconds before looking up at Shay. The other woman was completely turned around on the couch, gazing at her curiously with worry etched into her brow.
"What's wrong?" she asked. Cosima pocketed her phone and made her way to the couch.
"Delphine's dead," she said as she sat next to Shay, avoiding her eyes. The ex military officer caressed her back with slender fingers as she continued. "She was always protecting us."
"Us?" gently probed Shay. Cosima glanced at the DYAD card.
"I'm 324B21." she confessed. "We're...part of an experiment." She briefly looked Shay in the eyes as her tongue tied, unsure how to break the news to her girlfriend that she was a genetic identical. A clone. Sister. Sestra. There was a person out there would looked exactly like her and was a British punk. A soccer mom. Killed more people than she had fingers. A super stuck ass bitch. A man. She figured that Sarah's arrival wouldn't hurt her case.
"Is it about your sickness?" Shay asked quietly but Cosima shrugged.
"Being sick was a side effect. Most of us are sick- luckily that will be in the past once some blood and tissue samples are analyzed." Shay pecked Cosima's cheek.
"That's a relief," she said. "Could you explain the experiment?" Cosima closed her eyes.
"Remember Sarah?"
"Your friend?"
"She's actually my...sister," Cosima admitted. She could see Shay adjust in attention.
"I thought you were an only child."
"I thought so too."
"You never told me you were adopted." Cosima managed a grin.
"I never was. My mother gave birth to me at St. Clare's hospital after her maternity doc expressed concerns about delivery. I was the first of the family not to be born in Granny's tub." Shay cracked a smile to Cosima's anecdote. "My parents had a test tube baby due to fertility complications."
"So when you say sister…"
Cosima was about to answer when a familiar voice cut into the conversation, loudly banging on the door.
"Cos it's me." Cosima paused and sighed as her lips slightly parted.
"It's unlocked." The geek monkey laid her head back and brought a hand to rub her temples as Sarah opened the door.
"We're clones. Genetic identicals if you will."
Sarah glanced briefly at Cosima before focusing on Shay. "So you must be Shay, yeah?"
"What," Shay rose from the couch. "How?"
"Science," Cosima explained as she grudgingly stood up and acknowledge her British sister. "Sarah's not the only one." Cosima met her eyes. "You're the one who wanted to know about 324B21." Shay slowly left Cosima's gaze to face Sarah.
"It's nice to meet you, Sarah." Shay said rather humbly. She inhaled as she closed her eyes. "This is unreal."
"I'm as real as it gets," Sarah retorted. She glanced at Cosima. "DYAD wants to meet with us."
"Why?" Cosima asked.
"Dunno. Ferdinand called S so I'm guessing it's safe. Guess we'll find out when we get there." Cosima looked at Shay, who shook her head and smiled.
"We'll pick up at a later time, Cosima." she said, her eyes bouncing back and forth between the two clones. Cosima turned her attention back to Sarah.
"Let's get this show on the road, shall we?"
A/N: I had an idea and wrote this in the middle of the night, so I might continue this after I figure out how to show that Cosima knows Delphine's...not dead. Might have a POV of Delphine throughout this story too.
Thanks for reading.
