Maya Hart always seemed to fall for the guys she couldn't have.

Well, not that she fell for guys often. Once she got a look at Joshua Matthews, she forgot all about any other guy on the face of the earth. Of course Josh rejected her time after time, saying that she was too young for him.

Three years didn't really seem like that much to her. Maybe it seemed bigger when she was in middle school and he was getting ready to graduate, but now that she was in high school, the three years seemed smaller and he finally said yes to her.

He was at NYU and she was in her sophomore year of high school. She got to see him pretty often despite his busy class schedule and the fact that high school girls weren't allowed in the guy's dorms after five pm, which she found ridiculous.

Josh was an awesome boyfriend, at least when they weren't in the middle of their first actual argument.

(Which was 50 percent Maya's fault but she was mad and wanted no blame in the whole thing.)

Even though the argument wasn't serious, it had been blown entirely out of proportion and Maya was fuming as she walked toward the apartment from the bakery.

It was dark and a Friday night in NYC. Not a good combination or a suitable environment for a sixteen year old girl. It was also raining lightly. It was a busy night, with crowded streets of cars and a variety of equally alarming people on the sidewalks.

She walked for two blocks until she reached the intersection that she needed to cross to get to her own street so she could go home to her apartment and not think about her argument with Josh.

Maya looked both ways before she crossed the street, but she didn't see the drunk driver who ran the red light.
