Alright here is it. Everything is changed. If you're reading this and haven't spotted any changes, you've already missed some. See if you spot them, if you like the new feel of it. Okay, from the top now...
There was one kind of accidental magic that Uncle Vernon approved of, and that was Harry's glamour. Harry didn't know that this glamour existed, but Uncle Vernon knew something fishy was going on from the very start. Whenever Dudley or Vernon beat up Harry, the wounds would be there until the next morning. The next day Harry would wince and it was obvious he was suffering, but no one could ever see them. Uncle Vernon usually would have punished Harry for using his freaky powers, but as it saved them from curious neighbors and teachers, he let it be.
The first time Vernon noticed something freaky, Harry was five and had come home with better marks than Dudley. As if the little freak could possibly be smarter than his son. Uncle Vernon had punished him for the first time, but the signs had not been there the next day. The glamour never fell, and continued even after Harry went to Hogwarts. Most accidental magic is built on emotions, and Harry's glamour were built on fear. Fear of adults finding out, fear of his friends finding out, fear of anyone, finding out that Harry was treated worse than a house elf for being a freak.
The one time the glamour came down was the summer between his first and second years, when he was locked in his room. After using so much energy against Quirrell and Madame Pomphrey doing nothing but make him sleep, he didn't have a lot of energy. Then coming back to Private Drive and getting starved again didn't help. The amount of food given to him didn't provide him with enough energy to keep up the glamour.
That was when Harry found out he had a glamour on in the first place. It hid the appearance of all his marks, scars, and malnutrition. That was when he understood what he really looked like and how true his family's comments were about him. Written all over his body was proof he was a freak. It remained down for the whole summer, so the only one to see it all was Hedwig. Later, when Ron and the twins came to rescue him, the glamour shot up so fast it made Harry dizzy. But the Weasleys never saw anything, and all was good in Harry's mind. That is, all was good until sixth year.
It was the first Defense Against the Dark Arts class of the year and everything was going downhill very fast.
"Mr. Potter-you-have-already-lost-your-house-ten-points-do-not-make-matters-worse-for-yourself," said Professor Umbridge in one breath without looking at him. "As I was saying, you have been informed that a certain Dark wizard is at large once again. This. Is. A. Lie."
"It is NOT a lie!" said Harry. "I saw him, I fought him!"
"Detention!" said Professor Umbridge triumphantly. An evil look crossed her face. "And to prove a point, since you like to try and use hidden magic, let's reveal all your lies." Umbridge pointed her wand at Harry, and immediately his classmates started to mutter. What was going on, what hidden magic was he using, was he really dark then, and what was he lying about? "Ostendo!" Umbridge shouted and Harry gasped. He knew what spell and she used and knowing what was about to happen, he bolted from the classroom. The whispers grew.
Hermione and Ron had no clue as to what made him run, but they did notice that as Harry left, he had seemed to be shrinking. They shot each other a glance and made to go after him, but Professor Umbridge shot them a warning glare that made them sit down and decide to wait till class was over. Well, Hermione sat down, and dragged Ron down with her, whispering that they would only make it worse for Harry into his ear. As it was, Professor Umbridge had a cruel twisted smirk on her face, one that reminded most people of a cat that had just caught a mouse. "Now then students, back to reading the lesson. There will be no need to talk or have your wands out."
Somewhere else in the castle, Harry was still running. He took all the secret passages he could, and didn't stop until he felt his glamour slip back into place. Finally, he stopped to breathe, and slumped against the wall. Harry groaned into his hands.
'Bloody fucking brilliant. There was no way in Merlin he was getting out of this one.' With the way gossip spreads in Hogwarts he knew everyone would know about his stand-off with Umbridge, and everyone would want to know what that spell was and what it did. Hermione and Ron would be the worst. Especially Hermione when she found out what the intended use for the spell was.
Harry stayed in that same position, just thinking, until he heard a multitude of footsteps and realized that it must be time for the next class. And lucky him, it was Potions with the Slytherins. He started walking to the dungeons before he remembered that he left his bag back in DADA. Since Harry really didn't want to go back, he just hoped that Ron or Hermione had gotten it for him, and continued on his way.
The trek to the Potions class was silent, as Harry still only took the hidden passages as he didn't want anybody to see him right now. It got so silent that Harry cast a quick Tempus charm to check the time, and found that he still had plenty of time till the class started. So, he pressed on.
Once Harry finally did make it to the classroom, 15 minutes early, he was shocked to see that someone had already beaten him to it. Just his luck that after dealing with Umbridge, he had to deal with childish Malfoy. Luckily the classroom was open so he was able to avoid a confrontation and take his seat. As usual, Malfoy glared at him before taking his seat at the opposite end of the classroom. Slowly the class filled up, with every student staring and whispering at Harry as soon as they laid their eyes at him. And, as usual, Harry ignored them.
His happiness grew as Ron slid in his seat next to Harry and handed him his schoolbag. "Thanks mate," Harry said. Ron looked at him for a second before replying, "No problem. Harry," Ron glanced around, taking note of all the classmates listening and opened his mouth to speak. "We'll talk about it later Ron." Harry said, aggravated that Ron would try and talk when everyone was clearly listening.
Everyone shut up when Snape entered the room, cloak billowing dramatically. His gaze lingered a bit on Harry but otherwise he continued with the lesson as usual, including all the quick remarks and the jeers except for the ones typically thrown at him. Actually, this shocked the hell out of Harry. Snape, of all people, not going out of his way to make at least one comment? Nothing. Was Snape sick?
Another thing, the Slytherins were also abnormally quiet. None of the Slytherins had bullied a first year Gryffindor, Malfoy hadn't made one pass about is all-powerful father, and Pansy and Millicent hadn't made any girls cry yet. All of this weird behavior was actually starting to freak Harry out. What were they plotting? Some grand prank to embarrass him in front of the whole Great Hall? Some scheme to make him have an emotional breakdown? Did they plan to use the spell Umbridge did except this time in front of the entire school?
Suddenly, he had a horrible thought. Did they know? Had they somehow seen? Did he let his glamour slip in Potions? Did everyone see? Harry quickly looked down and checked himself but he couldn't see anything that would tell them the truth. knew that he was probably overreacting, but he couldn't help it. He couldn't…he couldn't…he just couldn't deal with it. The looks would only get worse. He couldn't stand pity. Everyone pitied him, well, pitied, hated, or put him on a pedestal to fight a man Dumbledore refused to face. There was never any in between.
The rest of the lesson was a blur, but he knew what was coming. The looks of pity. Hermione would give him it, Ron would get mad at him and tell everyone who didn't know, and then Skeeter would make sure the whole world knew too. That's why he had held down the resolve to tell no one. As soon as the bell rung Harry shot out of his seat. He would've been home free but he got held back.
"Potter! Stay after."
Harry looked at the door and genuinely considered leaving anyways. The day had already gone on much longer than it needed to. And the last person he wanted to talk to was the man who made it possible for him to lose Sirius. God, just thinking his name hurt. 'Pull yourself together. We won't show him our pain. He doesn't need any more ammunition then he's already got.' When he knew he had himself under control Harry turned around to see the class already completely empty.
"Potter, apparently the Headmaster did not learn his lesson the first time and wants our lessons from the previous year to continue."
"Why? They clearly didn't work and you're the one that ended them."
"Don't question me boy! Do not think because that mutt is dead you will find leniency with me. I'm sure everyone is crawling to comfort the boy-who-lived but I have no time for such idiocy. We begin your lessons again tonight."
"We'll be doing the same thing as last time? With you going through my mind?"
"What else would be doing Potter? Something wrong? I heard you had a problem with a certain spell this morning."
The smirk on Snape's face told Harry all he needed to know about how tonight would go. It would be like last year except Snape would be ripping through his mind tonight for a specific purpose. He would find out about the glamour and then he'd find out about Private Drive. It would be agonizing for Harry and he was going to enjoy every second. 'He can't find out!'
"Is that all sir?"
It was amazing how blank Harry's face was despite the complete turmoil he was going through on the inside. Harry escaped from the room as quickly and calmly as he could before he broke into a sprint to get away.
Harry quickly came to a stop when he almost crashed into Neville.
"Oh! Sorry Harry...hey, you alright?"
"Fine. Sorry about almost crashing into you. Was getting away from Snape."
"Well, I can't fault you for hauling ass away from that! I would too"
Harry felt his heart begin to slow down as Neville continued to talk and they walked to dinner. Of course Neville wouldn't ask about today. If there was one Gryffindor with tact it was Neville. Add to the fact, Neville was a true friend. Harry felt gratitude begin to fill him and pulled Neville into a quick hug.
"Thanks, man."
"No problem Harry. What are friends for."
They sat down at the table and quickly began to fill their plates. Harry could hear the whispers all around the hall as people talked about earlier today. Harry wished he could just escape but with detention and practice with Snape he needed the food. But the problem was, he was drowning. All the talking, looks, and pointing were filling up in his head till he started to hear white hum. Hermione opened her mouth at that moment, presumably to talk about class (again when everyone was listening) and Harry quickly got to his feet.
Harry tried not to speed walk as he left the hall and made his way to the common room. He didn't notice most of the Gryffindors followed him till he went to make his way upstairs and Ron and Hermione called him back. He couldn't believe they were really trying to do this here and now, in front of the entire common room.
"Harry, Ron and I looked up that spell. Why did you leave class? What were you hiding? How come you didn't tell us you were doing that type of advanced magic? Are you lying about something? I mean if you didn't tell us about this glamour you have than how can we believe you're not hiding other stuff!"
Harry looked at Hermione as she huffed and tried to catch her breath. He opened his mouth to defend himself when Ron cut in.
"Take it down."
Harry froze. Everyone in the room could feel the held breath of the moment and didn't bothering trying to watch with subtlety at that point. They just wanted to know what the savior was hiding.
"No."
Someone in the room gasped. Ron's face quickly started getting red before he even opened his mouth.
"Take it down! If you're not lying or keeping secrets than take it down!"
"No!"
Things were quickly beginning to spiral out of control and seemed like even some other students were getting mad that they were being denied the chance to see what Harry was hiding. The noise in the room got even worse when Hermione started talking about how the magic he's doing must not be approved by the teachers if he's hiding it.
"Mate you always do this! Always needing to make everything about you and have atten-"
"Harry you're going to get in trouble for this! If the teachers don't know then you know it's probably dark and-"
Harry kept trying to speak, was trying to speak to defend himself.
"I'm not doing dark magic! And I'm not keeping secrets! Why aren't you listening?!"
He was almost shouting to be heard but they weren't listening. They were more focused on his secret ant the sound of their own voices. Harry felt it the moment the tension snapped and he was ready. He'd been ready all day. He just didn't think the attack would come from someone so close.
Ron drew his wand and pointed it at Harry. Harry already had his wand flying out his hand with a quick Expelliarmus before Ron could even move his lips. Harry noticed in the back of his mind how no one came to his aid. Harry wished the twins or Neville were here. The house of the "loyal" they were, even though they all just sat back and watched Ron try to attack him. The heart crusher was when Hermione pulled out her own wand right after Ron's went flying.
Harry knew he'd lose his wand before he had a chance to get rid of hers. He felt her Expelliarmus hit and his wand begin slipping free of his hand. He heard the spell from this morning in a kind of deja-vu like state. His wand was flying through the air and the spell was headed right for him.
He took a chance. In such close range he couldn't dodge. So even though he was no longer holding his wand he yelled out "Protego!"
His wand still facing towards Ron and Hermione, sprung a shield up. It knocked the spell back and turned it into a projectile. It crashed into Hermione and Ron, throwing them back into the sofa. The common room was completely silent.
Harry glanced at the room, a deadness to his eyes. He looked at the all the people who claimed to be his friends and just stood back as he was attacked. Just so they could learn his secret. He picked up his wand from the floor and walked up to his room.
Harry could feel tears welling up but refused to let them fall. He cast a locking charm at the door and quickly began gathering his things. He called for Hedwig quietly hoping she would be nearby. Turned out she was, as she flew in only seconds later. He knew she must have sensed his distress, smart girl. He whispered his idea in her ear and smoothed down her feathers as she hooted at him.
He tried to reconsider. Hermione and everyone always accused him of being overly emotional and rushing into things. But this time, he felt nothing but empty calm. All of the pieces of his plan were beginning to fall together. He considered other possible options and looking at them from all sides, nixed them. There was only one option. The option that provided him with the most safety and greatest chance of happiness. With his chosen course of plan, Harry flew into action.
He knew he didn't have a lot of time and had to act fast. If he was going through with this then he wouldn't have another chance outside of now. Harry closed his case and grabbed Hedwig's cage. Laying everything out n the bed he quickly shrunk it all except for his broom. He grabbed his pillows and stuffed them under his blanket to make it look like he was in bed. Finally, he closed his curtains and put every locking charm on them that he knew. Chances were they'd think he went to sleep and wanted to be left alone, especially because the lump under the blankets was slightly visible through the curtains. That would give him a little extra time.
He heard people footsteps and he had moments before his time was up. It wouldn't take them long to get the door open. Harry looked at Hedwig patiently waiting for his command and he smiled. 'One girl that'll never leave my corner.'
"Go Hedwig. You'll be able to find me when I settle somewhere safe. Stay out of sight and be careful. I'll see you soon girl."
Hedwig soared out of the window and Harry followed to it. Carefully and as quietly as he could he climbed out. Hanging on with toes and fingertips, Harry softly shut the window. On the other he heard the door bang open, and the reverberation lost him his grip. Harry swallowed his shout and let his body free fall.
That night Harry Potter flew away from Hogwarts.
Well there it is, the new first chapter. If you've read the old version please leave a comment about what you think. I like this a lot better already and have stronger feelings about what's happened. Hope you liked it!
