So it's been a while and I can't believe I left this story hanging ... this is only half of the original chapter I intended to post and that's probably why ... well enjoy ...
"Fuck, what the hell are you doing?" A voice cries out behind them shattering the moment.
Jace loosens his grip on her allowing her feet to touch the ground again but still holding her against him. They both look up in the direction the voice came from both knowing who it was and what it means.
"Izzy ..." Jace groans as Clary's eyes widen as she sees the look on her face. It is one of confusion and anger mixed together.
"Get the hell away from her... You told me you wouldn't! You promised me!" She shouts with such an angry tone that they both spring apart.
"Isabelle please ... Let me explain." Jace starts breathlessly holding his hands out in front of him in surrender as he takes a step forward. Clary leans against the wall catching breathing hard and looks over at her friend her cheeks turning a darker shade of pink in embarrassment.
"Don't Isabelle me ... You asshole." Izzy says bitingly, "Clary get over here right now. We need to leave right now!"
Clary stands there frozen looking conflicted. Her heart is beating so fast right now and she feels so disorientated that she can't even move. Jace looks over at her and tries to meet her eyes but she won't meet them.
He feels a pang in his heart as he realises the spell has been broken by the fact that Izzy is here. That the perfect little bubble they were in has burst, the moment where nobody else mattered is gone. And it has changed everything.
"Wait ..." Jace says when he sees the look on her face, "you don't have to listen to her. This isn't about her ..."
"Clarissa Adele Fray!" Isabelle says raising her voice again, "come over here right now ... you promised me you would stay away from him. And you know why ...He was completely ignoring you this morning ... Don't you remember that? He told me you mean nothing to him ... That it was a one night stand, that it was just sex. He told me that just now. Is that what you want?"
Clary looks between the both of them warily, "I don't understand..." and her eyes finally settle on Jace as she bites her lip waiting for him to explain. She feels a sickness in stomach as she looks up at Jace and sees the look in his eyes confirming that what Isabelle says is true.
"That's not ..." Jace starts in a panicked tone. He feels so stupid for saying it now. For trying to convince Izzy but mostly himself that it was true when he knew it wasn't. He regrets it and wishes he could take it back.
"Are you going to deny that you said that? Are you really going to lie to her?" Izzy asks in a disgusted tone cutting him off. He knows why she is doing this. Part of him understands why that she is just trying to protect Clary from him. The person he used to be.
And he knows he hasn't had long enough to convince Izzy he has changed. But part of him hopes Clary has seen enough of him to understand.
"No but ... I did ... Jesus Izzy... Please that's not how I meant it." He says weakly. The words sound useless even to his own ears.
"This is him all over. I know him Clary, he's my brother. He toys with people and I don't know what he said to you to but I wouldn't believe a word he says. He just wants to screw you and I won't let him mess with you to get what he wants to then just throw you away. I've seen him do this so many times but I won't let him do it to you." Izzy says viciously.
And at that moment he knows anything he will say now is useless. He can't deny that's how he used to be. It's the truth but it's not the truth anymore. It's not who is he is anymore. At least he thinks that's the case.
Jace isn't even looking at Izzy anymore he's just staring at Clary's face as her expression falls. It makes him feel like he's been punched in the gut. And he knows he can't fix this. But he wants her to understand. He knows if anyone can it's her.
Clary feels her heart lurch as Jace stares at her. He's not denying any of it and it makes her feel sick. Is that all she is to him? How can that be all this is when it feels like so much more to her. She needs to get out of here before she falls apart. She needs to leave before she makes an even bigger fool of herself.
"Don't do this Clary. I'm begging you ..." Jace says when she looks up at him, "just let me explain." His hands shake as he sees the look in her eyes. The confusion, the hurt, the distrust. What can he do to make her understand. Why should she believe him? He knows he has no words to explain so it is futile so he just stops.
"Who do you trust me or him?" Izzy asks frantically, "I'm your best friend I would never lie to you."
Clary looks at him almost apologetically but he can see the wavering resolute look in her eyes as she turns her head away from him and walks towards Izzy. If there is one part of her he can reach maybe just maybe he has a chance.
He grabs her hand and she looks back at him and closes her eyes painfully.
"Don't ..." she says weakly as she tries to pull her hand away but he tightens his grip. She is so close to falling apart when he touches her. She knows she needs to leave. She needs to get out of the room before she breaks down. How could she have been so foolish to think someone like him would want someone like her. Actually want to be with her.
"Let go of her now Jace or I swear to God!" Izzy says angrily.
"Don't do this... please." He begs as he loosens his grip on her. His heart plummets into his stomach as she pulls away.
She doesn't even look back at him as she carries on walking and her hand slips out of his. She can't look back.
"No..." he whimpers and his face falls watching her walk away. This isn't how this was meant to go. But what did he expect when someone like him could never deserve someone like her.
"Go wait for me in my car Clary." Izzy shouts after her.
Clary doesn't look back as she walks out. Jace let's out a strangled noise.
"Why are you doing this Isabelle?" He asks his eyes blazing. He just wants to understand why. She has never involved herself in his life like this before. He understands that Clary is her friend but he hadn't expected this.
She lets out a derisive laugh and walks towards him with her hands clenched at her side.
"Why? More like what the fuck do you think you're doing? I told you to stay away from her ... You don't think she's suffered enough tonight." Izzy says pushing against his chest, "She's so vulnerable and you're taking advantage of her. As if sticking that whore Satarina in front of her wasn't bad enough. What the hell are you thinking? She will not be another one of your games ... I won't allow it." She says shoving him again.
"That's not what this is." Jace says groaning, "I didn't think... I didn't make her do anything she didn't want to Izzy I swear. I told her to stay away from me but the way she was looking at me ... The things she said I just couldn't help myself. You just don't understand..."
"I don't need to understand. I'm not losing my best friend just because you want to screw her." Izzy says furiously.
"It's not like that..." Jace says sighing. And he gets that she's worried that Clary will be hurt by him. That she cares about her. Even he's worried that he might mess up. But it's not what she thinks. For the first time it's not like that at all.
"What is it like then, Jonathan? Are you going to tell me you have feelings for her?" She sneers at him, "Don't make me sick ... I know you ... I've known you my whole life and you have never let anyone in. You barely let us in ... And when you finally get bored of her you will break her heart ... she's my best friend and I won't allow it. Do you hear me?!"
"Okay. Whatever you want to think you're entitled to I've done some terrible things... But I'll tell you this once and only once. I would never hurt Clary not intentionally. She's different ..." Jace says apologetically. He knows if she can just see that this is different. Just look at him and understand there might be a chance for him.
"Not intentionally? Is that what happened that night. Is that why you ran off to London after making a huge mess and then leaving us behind to pick up the pieces ... wasn't that also meant to be unintentional?" Izzy asks sarcastically.
The words slice through him and he feels pain like he has never felt before. It's been over a year and the memories come back once more. The part of the night he can actually remember and his stomach squeezes so tightly he thinks he might throw up. But he takes a deep breath and pushes it all down.
"That's what you really think of me, huh?" He asks laughing darkly, "Whatever you want Isabelle. Fine ... it's yours."
She's so right. Why did he think he deserved any better than this. When that night proves that he is everything Izzy says and worse.
Her she's widen as she sees the flash of hurt in his eyes. The crack in his armour.
"No Jace wait ... I didn't mean ..." She says softly as she realises she might have gone too far.
He won't even look at her as he turns and walks out of the room without even glancing back once.
"Wait ... I didn't mean it!" She calls after him. And when he doesn't stop she walks out into the hall to go after him.
She hears the front door slam and her eyes widen. She follows him out hoping he's just gone to get some air but he's already in his car and she just comes out in time to see him pull away.
"Shit!" She cries out and sighs.
She looks over and Clary is standing leaning on her car looking like she's about to burst into tears.
"Great evening, just great." Izzy says to herself and she goes back inside to grab her keys and take them home.
Okay so the second half of the original chapter I had planned is not fully written but I have it all laid out.
Some reviews some feedback would be a great way to help me out of this writers block/rut I'm facing.
There's a bumpy road ahead for Jace and Clary ... what do you think is going to happen next. I always love theories especially when people get them right! Not that I like to be predictable or anything!
