Hello my lovelies! I got a request on tumblr to make this story. Feel free to review :)
It wasn't often that Bellamy got to spend time with his best friend. Between the whole being on a new planet to trying to survive on this new planet, it had been a long time since he had a normal conversation with Miller. Like a hundred years or so.
So he was glad when they found themselves sitting at the bar together; they were able to fall back into old ways pretty easily.
"Nah, I don't think I believe you. There is no way that Raven would of done that."
Bellamy chuckled. "I promise you it's true. You get to know a whole other side of people when you are stuck in space together."
"Yeah well you get to know a whole other side of people when you are stuck underground too."
Bellamy glanced down at his drink. "Yeah. I know that was hard."
Miller shrugged. "But we're here. And I got Jackson out of it." He looked across the room to where Jackson was sitting with Clarke, Madi, Murphy, and Emori. They were deep in a game of poker.
"You seem like a great pair," Bellamy said. "Honestly, you seem perfect for each other."
"Yeah," said Miller, still gazing towards Jackson. "You know, I honestly think that we were soulmates. Like don't laugh. I loved Brian, but with Jackson everything is so easy you know? It's nice having someone around who is always on the same page as me. I mean he can tell me what he's thinking with just a look."
Bellamy nodded, his gaze meeting Clarke's across the room. She gave him a smile and then rolled her eyes towards Murphy. Murphy had been caught cheating again.
"And having someone that I can talk to about anything. I mean, I love you dude, but there are some things I don't want to talk about with you. But it is so easy with him."
"I get it, our pasts are hard," Bellamy agreed. Like all the crap he went through as a child. The only person he had talked to about that was Clarke.
"And I swear even though we've been together for years, Jackson still makes me have butterflies and shit. He walks in and I just...my stomach still does a flip."
Bellamy was still watching the poker game and saw Murphy throw down his cards and Clarke start to laugh. He felt a feeling of overwhelming happiness overcome him that always got when he heard that sound. She got up from her seat and made eye contact with him again, coming towards them.
"But like you know what I mean, with Echo."
Something snapped in Bellamy's brain and he tore his eyes away from her. "What? Oh yeah. Echo."
Miller's gaze came back to Bellamy. "Yeah I mean you've been with her for years right? I have to be honest, she doesn't seem like your type but I mean you can't choose your soulmate right?"
"Hey," Clarke interrupted "Madi and I are heading to bed. See you guys tomorrow?"
"Of course," Miller responded, along with Bellamy's mumbled "Night."
He watched her as she walked away and felt his heart start to swell a bit.
"Shit," he muttered under his breath.
"What was that?" Miller asked, taking another sip of his drink.
"Nothing. But yeah, it sounds like you and Jackson are soulmates."
Miller smiled. "Thanks man. You know, I really did think for a while that you and Clarke were going to get together. You two always seemed to have a connection. Guess I was wrong."
Over Miller's shoulder he saw Echo walk into the room, bringing a sinking feeling to him. A feeling that was screaming at him that this was all wrong.
"Yeah," he said to Miller, "We really do."
Echo approached the two of them which cued Miller's leave. Bellamy didn't blame him. Although he had spent years with Echo, forgiving her, Miller had not. She was still the girl who blew up Mt. Weather, taking away their loved ones.
"What were you two talking about?" she asked, with her usual grim face.
"Just…" he paused, "catching up I guess. Rare we get a moment to talk."
"Well then I am sorry for the interruption."
"No it's fine. I was planning on heading to bed anyways."
Bellamy got up from his seat, Echo following him.
"I think I'll join you. No need to stick around and watch Murphy lose all of his belongings in poker."
Bellamy grumbled something incoherent, his mind still far away from the girl walking with him.
As he lay in bed that night, he found that sleep was not going to come. His thoughts kept drifting to what Miller had been saying about how he knew that Jackson was his soulmate.
Someone who he could tell anything to. Someone who was like his other half. The girl who came to mind was not the one laying beside him right now. He felt like a terrible person.
Bellamy got up quickly, realizing that he needed some fresh air to clear his head. Echo barely stirred as he pulled on a t-shirt and his boots and left the room. He made his way to a balcony, where he could look up at the unfamiliar sky.
He wasn't the only one thinking they needed some fresh air.
"Hey," Clarke said, "Couldn't sleep?"
"No. You?"
"Nightmares again." She patted the seat next to her on the bench. Bellamy went and sat.
"Want to talk about it?"
"It was just the usual," she sighed.
"The one with your mom?"
She shuddered. "Yeah, that one."
Clarke confided her nightmares a lot to him recently. With Abby gone, the rest of the gang still apprehensive of her, and Madi still recovering, Bellamy was her go to with everything.
"What about you?" she asked, "What's keeping you up?"
Bellamy hesitated. He had been telling Clarke almost everything too. Ever since he saved her, he found that he confided in her more than usual. It was just easy that way.
"Do you believe in soulmates?"
Clarke looked at him curiously, "Yeah, I think I do. Why?"
Bellamy broke away from her questioning gaze. "Miller was saying that he thinks Jackson is his soulmate. And it I guess it got me to thinking…. I guess I don't…."
"Know if that's you and Echo?" she finished for him.
"Yeah. How'd you know?"
"Cause I know you," Clarke smiled, "And I can see you are tearing yourself up over this."
"Is it bad that I don't think she is my soulmate?" he asked.
Clarke thought on this for a moment. "I don't think so. I think some people find their soulmates, but others don't. Or they do and then they die."
Bellamy's heart sunk a little. He was afraid to ask. "Like Lexa?"
Clarke shook her head. "No. I mean I did love Lexa, but we definitely were no Jackson and Miller. Or Monty and Harper. But I guess my point is, you can still love Echo even if you don't think you are meant to be. The human race is very limited, to find your one true love is really hard. You might have to settle."
Bellamy started to laugh. "Thanks."
Clarke smacked him playfully. "Don't take it the wrong way. But if you see my soulmate around, send him...or her my way please."
She looked at him and he could almost swear that she was being a little wistful. She patted his leg and then leaned on his shoulder before going over everything she needed to do tomorrow. He listened contently, reassuring her when needed. Soon her eyes started to drift shut. A part of him wanted to let her fall asleep, but he knew that that wouldn't be fair.
"I think you need to go back to bed Clarke."
"Mmmm."
"I'm serious, time to get up," he said, giving her a slight push to her feet. She reluctantly did, turning to grab his hands and pull him up as well.
"Thanks for listening to me," she said, before giving him a slight wave and heading back to her room. Watching after her, he knew that he could not go back to bed with Echo. Instead he went and found a comfy looking couch to rest on.
…
"Well, well did someone get kicked out of the bed last night?"
Bellamy blinked groggily to Murphy's creepyass smile looking down at him.
"Not exactly," Bellamy said, slowly getting up, "I couldn't sleep so I was out here-"
"Let me guess. Talking to Clarke." Bellamy stayed silent. "I figured," Murphy continued, "you two don't know what a normal sleeping schedule looks like. Well speak of the devil."
Bellamy turned to see Clarke entering the room, Madi by her side. She smiled his way and Bellamy once again got the feeling that he was in deep trouble.
"Morning," she said when she approached, "Bellamy did you sleep out here all night?"
"Yeah, didn't want to keep Echo awake."
"I would of stayed up with you."
He could see that she was sincere too. She would forfeit a night's sleep to keep him company, because she knew that he would do the same for her.
"It's alright. You needed your rest."
Clarke gave him her famous disapproving look. There was no way she was going to admit that she ever needed rest. Her eyes drifted passed Bellamy, causing him to follow her sightline to Echo coming in the room. Right. His girlfriend.
Echo approached him like she would any other morning, not showing much affection but sidling up to his side.
"Didn't hear you leave," she said.
"Came down here to get my mind off things, ended up crashing on the couch. Didn't want to wake you."
"Thank you, I probably would of killed you," was Echo's reply. She said it jokingly, but it was hard for Bellamy to see past the joke. Clarke would of stayed up for him.
Murphy cut into the silence, "So who is making breakfast for me this morning? Because I sure am not and you know Emori will burn the place to the ground."
With the conversation changed, the group headed towards their dining area to join the rest of the community in eating eggs and strawberries. Bellamy could feel himself struggling to act normal. What do you do when you start to doubt that your girlfriend is not the one for you, but instead the girl sitting next to her at breakfast is?
He withdrew from the conversation, and Clarke took notice. When she caught his eye she gave him a worried look. He gave a tiny shake of his head to let her know it was nothing. She responded by giving him an expression of annoyance. He had to get out of there.
"I'm going to get some fresh air," he said, getting up from the table
"Are you alright?" Echo asked.
"Yeah...I just need to think some things through."
Bellamy walked out of the dining room and out the front doors. He started walking and he didn't know where he was going until he wound up running into his sister. She was sitting around a dead fire, whittling away a chunk of wood. She glanced up when he sat down beside her.
"Hey Bell"
"What are you doing?"
"I am trying to do something productive with my time." She held up the mishapen object. "It's a dolphin, can't you tell?" When Bellamy didn't answer she chucked it into the fire. "There goes my dreams of being a whittler. Anyways, what's wrong with you?"
"Nothing is wrong with me."
"There is something definitely wrong with you. You're my big brother, I know these things. Tell me what is wrong."
"I don't really need you messing around in my relationships."
"Oh so it's your love life then huh?"
Bellamy cursed. He was thinking about it so much, it had just slipped out.
Octavia crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair.
"Trouble with Echo?"
"No, Echo 's great it's just-"
"You are in love with someone else."
"No. I- Why do you think-?"
Octavia looked at him smugly. "I told you, I know you big brother. Let me guess. You finally realized that you are in love with Clarke."
Bellamy just stared at her.
"Don't act so surprised. It has been very obvious for a very long time."
Bellamy shook his head. "But I only figured it out last night."
Octavia rolled her eyes. "Oh come on Bell. I literally saw you bring her back to life with the pure willingness of your heart-"
"It was CPR"
"-and I've seen you stare at her enough in the past to know that you are head over heels for that girl. And she loves you too."
Bellamy shook his head. "You don't know that."
"Yeah I do," Octavia said, "she has the same dopey look on her face when she looks at you. And she cares about you the most out of everybody. I mean God Bellamy she gave up the chance to keep all of Spacekru safe in the bunker because you asked her to. She's a cold hearted bitch, if it was me she would of shot me."
Bellamy stayed silent. Now that it was being said out in the open, he could see where Octavia was coming from.
"So what are you going to do about it?" Octavia asked.
"I don't know."
"Well you better think quick, because here comes your beloved right now."
Bellamy looked up to see Clare walking over to him, a worried expression on her face. He instantly got to his feet to meet her.
"Hey," she said, glancing at Octavia, "Is everything alright? You seemed off at breakfast."
"Yeah, I'm ok. Just got a lot on my mind."
Clarke did not look reassured. He felt like she could almost read his mind. In fact the next words were: "Is it still about what Miller was saying last night?"
Octavia snorted behind them, but Bellamy ignored her. "No. Kind of. I need to talk to Echo."
Clarke nodded. "Ok. I'll be in the office if you need me."
He watched her as she walked away, for the second time in twenty four hours. Something in him was screaming that if he didn't go after her right now, he was going to be in pain. But he willed himself to find Echo instead.
"Hey," she said when he approached her sitting in a chair, "Get enough air?"
They were all alone on the balcony, a place where Echo would come to sharpen her knives and watch what everyone was doing down below.
"Echo..." he started, "I need to talk-"
She stood up and his courage faultered as she looked into his eyes. He loved her, just not as much as he should.
"You're breaking up with me."
Bellamy stayed silent. Echo nodded and sat back down.
"Fine. I'm keeping the room, you can find someone else to live with."
"Echo. Please, you know I love you."
"Yeah but not as much her," she stared at him again. "I'm right aren't I? It's Clarke."
Bellamy gave a weak nod.
"You know," she said, focusing back on sharpening the knife in her hand, "When we found her alive, I was really angry for a long time. Because I knew that we were over if she was in the picture." She stopped and sighed. "But I came to accept that this was going to happen one day. It was wrong for me to let it go on as long as it did. I guess I kept thinking if she bites the dust one of these days, well then problem solved. I don't want that anymore."
Bellamy's eyes became glassy. "Echo I am so sorry."
"Don't be. Just…go make her happy."
It was clear the conversation was over. Bellamy turned away, his heart thudding in his chest. The farther he got away, the more the thought of Echo's face faded and Clarke's came into view.
He needed to find her now. All the years of wanting when he didn't even know that he was loving her came pressing on him; if he didn't tell her how he felt soon he felt like he might explode.
She was in the office, pouring over the construction blueprints. Her eyes were focusing on drawing the floor plans. She looked up when he came in, dropping her pencil on the table and standing up straight.
"Hey, how was the talk with Echo?"
"We broke up."
"Oh," she said surprised, "I'm sorry-"
"Don't be." He stepped closer to her. "I love you Clarke."
Clarke stared at him, her mouth slightly open. "You-?"
"I love you. For a long time now." Maybe she didn't feel the same way, but it was out and like a sigh of relief for Bellamy. He turned to walk away but she grabbed his shoulder.
"Bellamy, can I kiss you?"
He responded by grabbing her face and bringing her lips to meet his. She melted into him, her arms going around his neck. It was as if he could feel every thought she ever had about him. She loved him. She needed him. He was her everything.
He tried to pour all of his thoughts back to her. He loved her more than anything. He could not live without her.
A lot of things had parted them through the years. Distance, time, space, and even death. But nothing was going to part them in this moment. That's the thing about soulmates. Once you find them, you won't ever be able to let them go.
