This version of Aladdin belongs to Disney.
On a regular basis, commoners native to the Realm of Agrabah overhear rumors of the Princess Jasmine who forever dwells behind the towering palace walls, and never steps a foot into the urban cities herself.
Jewel traders and boat merchants selling their current goods throughout the Marketplace are usually the ones who catch a glimpse of some regal suitor previously summoned by the Sultan storming back out of the palace gates, claiming how insulted they are to come here all this way for nothing, and the news spreads from there.
It's common knowledge that all Princesses born in this kingdom are lovely, so a case of unattractiveness cannot be the answer to why Jasmine isn't married off yet.
Apparently, the actual problem is her. Her conduct, that is.
More stories about the Princess's upbringing begin to grow and unfold as suitor after exotic suitor leaves their kingdom without another wife to add to their households.
Some say the Princess's tongue is like wildfire; it's uncontrollable and it will burn you if you're not careful.
Others will say that her eyes are cold and are the closest thing to ice and snow you will ever see in this sort of climate.
One market seller even claims that she keeps wild beasts for companions. He's heard her laugh before from high up on her terrace, and the lovely sound quickly turned unkind when a thunderous roar closely followed in the harmony.
Though no one knows whether to fully believe such tales or not, for the Princess Jasmine still remains a fair mystery to most.
This particular hot and arid day, however, ends up providing more proof to the matter.
Bystanders in the street nearby are stunned motionless as soon as they notice the palace gates are eagerly being pushed open again by a screaming prince, originally from one of the Eastern Dynasties. He half-stumbles through rising clouds of sand while attempting to break into a stronger sprint. He cries out in his native language, "Jiu ming!" towards the customers, seemingly wanting help, and it's only when he actually crashes face down in front of them with his Imperial silk robes torn at the waist, does it become clear that he is in some type of real danger.
But mass confusion still holds the customers where they are long enough to see a tiger slowly emerge in the curved shadow of the gates. A pair of peasant children gasp and dash out of sight together. The prince glances behind and twists around to sit there, horrified, watching the animal with wide eyes and a heaving chest.
Now, it's not confusion that plants everyone else to the ground, it's fear.
The tiger itself nonetheless, does not wander from the royal boundary lines. It just stands near the gates, observing the startled crowd, almost mockingly as its tail sways idly back and forth and holds a long strip of matching silk between its long fangs.
The only sound in that following moment is a soft pleading whimper coming from the prince.
Then suddenly, a sweet, beautiful voice flows down from far above them and cuts through the all the anticipation.
"Alright, good work, Rajah. Come back inside now."
I wrote this to celebrate Jasmine character really, to give a little bit more insight to her role before she met Aladdin. She's not just a Princess after all, she's the girl who can bond with tigers. My favorite scene is Aladdin is when Jasmine is finally introduced and her royal suitor is evidently chased out of the courtyard by Rajah. Because, you can guess that's probably happened before!
...But I also think that's why Aladdin was ultimately best match for her in the end. Through him, she sort of earned another view on the world and his trustworthy carefree attitude melted away the resentment and coldness that was growing inside of her.
