Book four Peace Chapter Fifteen: Aki and Ren's Final Strike
A few days had passed since the fire and everything had gone back to the way it was before. Everyone was surprised to see that the damage was all structure damage and they assumed it was due to Ren forcing most of Yue Bay into the temple. Since the prisoners had served what Sky and everyone on the island called their purpose they were taken back to their cells. They had all given Ren ideas on what to do about Aki and had even helped with rebuilding the temple. Sky told Ren he would see what he could do for them but he couldn't keep them out permanently at the time. He told her he might be able to shorten their sentence. Ren was thinking about what Sky had said but then she began to think about Aki. How was she going to find her? Where would she battle her? Ren didn't know what to do anymore. Ty and Hakoda were playing in the courtyard, making Ren tilt her head slightly. She watched as Ty lifted the ground under Hakoda but Hakoda used it as his advantage and froze the water in his pouch to make a ramp. Hakoda slid down the ramp and Ty used his metalbending to make a sled to go up the ramp.
"That's it! I have to mix the elements together. I can't keep fire and fire. I have to use waterbending techniques when using the other elements. Airbennding techniques when using the other elements. Firebending techniques for the other elements and the same with my earthbending techniques. You two are the best. I love you both," Ren said as she kissed both boys on top of the head and ran to an area to train.
The two boys looked at Ren then each other before they shrugged. Ren got to her training area and took a deep breath. Rooted but light on your feet is how we are going to start this out, Ren thought to herself. Ren moved like she would if she was airbending but she went to send a boulder, but she fell. Ren got back up and moved like she was airbending again but this time she was able to throw a boulder. She smiled and practiced the move several times until she felt comfortable with her progress. She continued to work her way through each element until she thought that she had made a decent improvement. Ren had to think of where she would battle Aki next. She couldn't destroy the island and she couldn't keep destroying the city. She looked at the portal for a moment, thinking how maybe that was her only option. Ren walked up to the temple, quickly entering the kitchen. She almost bumped into her parents, and the Beifong sisters. The four gave her a concerned looked as she spilled some juice on herself. Ren started to tap the counter as she drank her juice. Honora and Izumi soon walked in to see that Ren seemed very uneasy. When Kya and Bumi entered the room with Sky, Ren became more anxious. Ren's final breaking point was when Iroh, Ela, Kiran, and Takumi entered the room. She slammed the cup down and looked at all of them.
"You guys are making me feel claustrophobic. You're always in the same area as me and there are always so many of you. I need you guys to give me some space. I can't take all these people in one space. It is making thinking extremely hard," Ren said.
Everyone gave her a look before they left the room. Ren knew the truth was thinking around people was the least of her concerns. When Ren walked out of the temple she saw everyone sitting in the courtyard. She walked in the center of the courtyard and began to practice her acrobatics so that she would be able to move as easily as her great Gran-Gran Ty Lee. Ren knew that Aki would expect anything from her so Ren had to be prepared for anything from Aki. Ren knew that no matter what the fight would end the next time she saw Aki. She was not going to let her continue to do the things she was doing. Aki trying to burn the temple down was the last straw for Ren. Ren started to firebend and she started to bend the fire around, creating a whirlwind around herself. She started to sweat but she continued to bend the fire around herself to practice against the fire. She slowly moved the whirlwind closer but stomped her foot, making it disappear. Ren looked at the pavilion before she looked at everyone. She slowly cleaned up her mess before walking down to the pavilion to meditate. She sat down and closed her eyes, but soon she became uncomfortable. Everything started to spin for a moment but Ren still left her eyes closed.
Ren looked around to see that she was in the Fire Republic. She noticed that it was back when the Fire Republic was still the Fire Nation. She walked to see that she was at the Royal Palace. Ren walked into the palace to see Sozin and Avatar Roku as adults. Ren noticed that both Sozin and Roku looked very displeased. She walked over to the two to find out why the two were so displeased. She suddenly felt a hand on her back which automatically made her turn around. She saw Avatar Roku gazing at the sight, slightly withdrawn. Ren touched Roku's arm, pulling him back to give her advice. He looked at her for a moment before he looked at the scene in front of them again.
"So, it would appear you need some advice on someone in the royal family," Roku said as he looked at her.
"Yes. She is Lord Zuko's granddaughter or great granddaughter. It depends on how you look at it. I don't even know why she is doing what she is doing. I just know it has put a wedge between her and I. I wanted to try and look the other way for things but after certain things started to happen, I couldn't look the other way anymore. Roku, I am at a stalemate," Ren said.
"Watch closely," Roku said as he gestured towards the scene.
Ren looked at Roku for a moment before she turned her attention to the scene in front of her. The younger version of Avatar Roku and Sozin began to yell at each other. Ren watched as Sozin attacked Roku after Roku turned his back to walk out. Ren watched the fight unfold between the two men. She saw that Roku had spared Sozin's life after what he had just done. Ren looked at Roku before she looked at the scene again. Ren saw that Sozin had a smirk on his face even though he had been defeated.
"He was supposed to be my best friend and he betrayed me. After that I didn't think I made a mistake until the day I died. Then I realized I made the biggest mistake of my life. Yes, I do think I did the right thing when I spared his life but I should have done more. Remember Ren, do what you feel is the best solution for the world. You need to put your personal feelings aside," Roku said as he and the vision disappeared.
Ren opened her eyes and sighed. The advice he gave her was easier said than done. She stood up and began to walk into the courtyard. She looked at everyone in the courtyard and wondered if she should tell them what Roku had just told her. She wondered if maybe Aki was trying to get rid of her to do exactly what Sozin started. Ren wished she could only get into Aki's head for one moment. She felt someone touch her arm, making her look up. She saw Sky giving her a concerned look so she gave him a reassuring smile.
"I connected with Avatar Roku this time. His advice made me think a bit. He told me to put my personal feelings aside and do what I feel is best. The thing is I don't know if I will be able to do that. Aki has done so much for me in the past yet she has done so much to me. I'm human and I still have feelings. Sometimes they cloud my judgement and we have seen it in the past. I just don't know how to do this," Ren said.
"It's okay you won't be doing it alone," Sky said.
Ren smiled at him before she kissed him. Sky picked Ren up and threw her over his shoulder, making her scream. "Sky Beifong, put me down this instant! My feet need to be on the ground to use my sesmic sense. Sky, if you don't put me down, I'm going to beat you with my cables until you drop me," Ren said.
"Sounds like a fun time. Let's go somewhere more private first," Sky said to her.
Ren groaned as she used her metal cables to make Sky release her. She knew he was only trying to give her a small distraction from all her stress. She really needed to focus on the Aki issue then she could give everyone thing else her attention. Ren called for Hope and the two walked towards the ferry. Ren turned to usual group following her. Ren didn't know how Ela and Iroh would take it when she finally did defeat Aki. Ren sat on the ferry and began to pet Hope, listening to her purr. Ela started to walk over to Ren but stopped when she saw Ren talking to Hope about Aki. She stood there and listened to Ren's conversation until they reached Republic City. Ela soon felt someone touch her and she looked back to see Jinora standing there. When they finally arrived in the city Ren pulled Hope along to see if maybe they could find Aki. Ren heard someone call her name so she turned around to see Ryuu running towards the group. She gave him a look before she stopped. She could see that he was exhausted. She wondered what had happened to him since she had seen him last.
"Avatar Ren, I need to come find Aki with you. I need to apologize to her. I need to tell her why I did what I did. She deserves that much," Ryuu said.
Ren looked at Ryuu and knew that he would come either way. Ren didn't think Aki deserved anything. Aki was going to take advantage of Ryuu trying to apologize. Ren looked at everyone before she used her airbending to jump on to a building to get better view. Ren stood on the ledge of the building but still didn't get the view she wanted. She made a pillar out of air, giving her an even better view. Ren looked for Aki but she didn't see her. Ren landed on the ground, slamming her foot to see if she could find Aki with her seismic sense. Ren huffed before she punched the ground. She didn't understand why she couldn't find Aki. Unless Aki wasn't in Republic City Ren thought to herself. Where did she go? Ren thought maybe the vines would help her but then she thought maybe the Spirit World would be able to help her more. Ren was so lost now. Aki was in Republic City this whole time but now Ren couldn't find her. Ren started to walk around the city until they were at one of the vines. Ren placed her hand on the vine, going into the avatar state. Ren soon started to see places all over the world. All the places flashing in front of Ren soon became very overwhelming. Ren left her hand on the vine as long as she could but she soon fell to the ground. Sky ran over to her to make sure she was okay but when she looked up he saw that her eyes were still glowing. Ren placed her hand back on the vine. Ren soon left the avatar state and collapsed into Sky. Sky could see how much energy that had taken from Ren. He knew that going into the avatar state when she was younger exhausted her but he had never seen it exhaust her like this as an adult. Ren looked at Sky before they both stood. She finally knew where Aki was and she wasn't going to let her get away this time. Ren stood where she was for a moment until she made sure she would be able to fight. Ren didn't know if she wanted to fight. She thought back to what Avatar Roku had told her about personal feelings. Ren looked at the ground and thought about her destiny. If her destiny was to keep peace did that mean she had to fight Aki? She looked down at Aki's locket that was still around her neck and thought about some other options. She felt everyone staring at her and soon realized that they hadn't moved. Ren realized that she should start to run to Aki if she was going to stop her. Aki was more unpredictable than Azula. Everyone stopped when they saw Ren running towards the spirit portal. They couldn't believe Aki was stupid enough to be in the Spirit World. Everyone knew Ren had the advantage in the Spirit World. Ren stood at the portal but she didn't know what she was waiting for. She closed her eyes and took a step into the Spirit World. When she entered she saw Aki yelling at Korra. She saw Aki with a fire ball in her hand and she reacted by hitting Aki with her cables. Aki slid across the ground and soon looked up to see everyone coming into the Spirit World. Aki looked at Ren from the ground but Ren stood her ground. She wasn't going to show any fear. Aki finally stood and looked at Ela and Ryuu. Ren clenched her fist in case Aki tried anything. Ren saw that Aki had tears in her eyes. Ren saw Aki look at Takumi then the tear run down her cheek. Ren told herself to think of Avatar Roku's advice about what she should do.
"You kept him..." Aki said softly.
"They promised you'd have a better life. A life where you were loved and have all the things you wanted," Ela said.
"So, you don't love me?" Aki asked.
"Of course, I love you but they could give you more than I ever could," Ela said.
"You threw me away!" Aki screamed.
"Oh, for Raava's sake Aki. She didn't throw you away she gave you a better life. If you think how you were ditched was bad think about your sister, your brothers, and even Kuvira. Kuvira was in the streets after who knows how long her parents dumped her there. The people that worked at one of the trash companies heard Gopan crying from a dumpster. Sesi found out she was a waterbender at a very young age. Her parents decided to throw her into a lake and let nature get take care of what they thought was a problem. Then last there is Asha. His parents threw him in front of a saber-tooth moose lion as a child. He was lucky someone saved him. You, got off lucky in my opinion," Ren said
"No. You are lucky. Always have been and always will be. You're little miss perfect. The flawless Ren Beifong," Aki said as she shot a fireball at Ren.
Ren jumped over the ball before she made a ramp out of earth and used her metal cables to make a sled to slide across the ramp. Aki tried to knock Ren down with a fire blast but Ren was moving too fast. When Ren landed, she used her waterbending to make water tentacles. Aki sent multiple fire jabs at Ren, making Ren pull the water close to her body to protect herself. Aki growled when she saw that Ren was still standing. Aki started to bend fire around herself and Ren. Ren took a step closer as the fire move faster and closer. Ren stuck her foot at Aki and her fist at the whirlwind around her, soon shooting a large blast of fire. Ren and Aki both flew in the air but Ren pull water out of the air, making a ramp so she could land on the ground. Aki hit the ground with a thud and Ren sent an air blast, knocking her back further. Ren used her earthbending to trap most of Aki's body so she couldn't bend. Ren looked at Tenzin before her eyes began to glow and the metal at her side, turning it into a spear. Aki's eyes widened as Ren approached her. Aki tried to plead with Ren as Ren still approached her. Sky called Ren's name but she ignored him as she stood next to Aki with tears in her eyes, slowly raising the spear.
"Ren, don't do this. This isn't you," Sky said.
"She deserves it. She killed Grandpa Tenzin, our baby, and even Hakoda's mother," Ren said.
"You are Hakoda's mother. Ren, if you do this you will never forgive yourself. You don't want your children to think of you as a murderer. To Hakoda, you're a hero. Leave it that way," Tenzin said.
Ren looked up at him for a moment before her eyes stopped glowing. She looked backed down at Aki with the spear still in her hands. She heard Avatar Roku's advice again. Ren screamed as she threw the spear down at the ground between Aki's arm and torso. She looked at everyone before she slid against the spear and slid to the ground. Ren began to cry as she thought about what had happened over the years. She finally knew why Aki did what she did. She did it because of her family. She did it because of Ela and Ryuu. She did it because she was upset about Korra. Iroh was all she had and her family had lied to her about who she was her whole life. She was also jealous of Ren. She wanted to get rid of Ren and make everyone feel the same pain she did. She wanted everyone to hurt just like she did. Sky started to walk towards Ren but Tenzin held his hand up and started to walk over to Ren. Ren soon felt a hand on her shoulder, pulling her close. Ren looked up to see Tenzin with a sympathetic smile.
"I couldn't do it. I don't understand Grandpa Tenzin. I just couldn't do it. It felt so wrong," Ren said, crying.
"It is just who you are Ren. It is who you have always been. Killing isn't who you are. You are a strong person and being strong means being able to look past the things people have done to you and forgive them. You may not forgive her now, or even in five years from now but I know you will forgive her. Ren, you were able to look at her and say I am better than you. That is something I have tried to teach you when it came to solving the conflicts around the world. Ren, you always need to be the better person and never stoop down to their level," Tenzin said.
Ren looked at Tenzin with a smile on her face. He always knew how to make her smile. Ren looked at Aki for a moment who had tears running down her cheek. Ren grabbed the locket from around her neck and metal bent it around Aki's neck. Everyone looked at Ren as she sat on the ground. Aang nodded at Ren with a smile of approval. Ren pulled the metal back as she stood so it would be out of the way when the police force arrived. Ren could see that Ela and Ryuu were upset. She saw Ryuu pull Ela close and he whispered something in her ear before he kissed her cheek. Ren's eyes widened before she bumped into Tenzin. Tenzin gave her a concerned look but she assured him she was okay. She looked over at Iroh and Korra for a moment to see tears in Korra's eyes. Ren saw both sets of parents and how Aki had broken their hearts. Ren turned around when she heard Sky talking to his officers. Ren was so relieved it was finally over. Now all she had to worry about was in a few months the babies would be here. Ren watched as they took Aki out of the portal with her head hung low. Ren saw the anger flash Aki's face and it concerned her. Ren walked over to Sky and told him to let her know when Aki was in her own customized prison. Everyone made their way back to the island where they were welcomed by the group that didn't follow. Ren crouched down to hug Hakoda. Hakoda ran over to Ren, touching the small cut on her forehead.
"I'm happy you are okay mommy," Hakoda said as he kissed the cut.
Ren laughed a little as she kissed Hakoda's cheek. She thought about how Hakoda would always say the right thing to make her happy. She knew he would be a great big brother. A few months had passed and Ren walked into her mother's study to see her looking at some papers. Ren smiled as she thought about how in a few days there would be three more children added to the family. Ren thought about how everyone had finally arrived on the island last night to be there when the babies arrived. Jinora had finally looked up from her paperwork to see Ren standing in the doorway. Jinora was about to say something when Ren grabbed the wall, shaking the temple a bit. Jinora grabbed her desk and Kai stumbled into the room. Ren looked at her parents before she looked at the ground. Ren slammed her hand on the wall, shaking the temple again. Kai gave her a small smile before Jinora and Kai helped Ren look for Kya.
"Kya! Kya, we need you! Sky, Ren needs you too. This one is going to be a little different. A little difficult actually," Kai said.
Kya walked out to see Ren with her hand on her stomach. She gave Ren a small smile as she thought about what they would do. Ren had already shaken the temple twice and she still had a ways to go. Kya sighed and looked at the destroyed part of Republic City but knew that wouldn't be a suitable place to have a baby, let alone three. She then turned her attention to the spirit portal. She called for Sesi, Lin, and Senna. Sesi and Senna were going with to help with the babies and Lin, Kai, and Jinora were going with due to being the grandparent. Kya told them the plan and everyone hurried to an air bison. When they arrived in the Spirit World they quickly landed. Ren's original gang, Aang, Korra, Iroh, Tylee, Tenzin, and Mai soon appeared. They all gave Ren a concerned look until she grabbed Sky by his armor and started to yell at him. Aang looked at Katara and the two smiled at each other. Kya had explained what happened back at the island and everyone looked at Ren. Katara and Korra walked with Sesi, Senna and Kya to help Ren. Toph made a small hut for the women to work. Ren looked at the women around her and took a deep breath. Everyone looked at the small hut for a few hours until Katara came out. She smiled at everyone for a moment as Sky and Kya brought the three children out. Kya handed Jinora the little girl in her arms and Sky handed Lin one of the two boys in his arms.
"So, grandson what are their names or are we just supposed to call them Sky and Ren's child then give them a number. I mean they are my great grandchildren so I would like to know their names," Toph said.
"Yea Sky, aren't you going to tell them our children's name," Ren said as she placed a hand on his back and looked at their son. "I'll do it for you. This little guy right here that Sky has is Tarak. Lin is holding the shy one of the group so far. His name is Kalden. Mom has the only girl of the family and the one who has shown she is a Beifong already. Her name is Nivedita. They will fit into both families perfectly. Now let's get them back to the island so they can meet everyone else. Thank you for the help everyone. We will bring them for a visit sometime soon," Ren said.
The group got on the air bison but Aang, Tenzin, and Korra stopped Ren. They told her that being the avatar and a parent would be difficult and not to beat herself up for things that she couldn't prevent. She couldn't be there all the time but they did need her attention. Ren looked at Sky and wondered how they would do it. He was Republic City's Police Chief and she was the avatar. Tenzin told her to make sure all four of her children got her attention because one day when she is gone all of them would carry on her legacy. She looked at the three before she jumped on the bison. It didn't take long for them to arrive at the island. Everyone was waiting for them in the courtyard. Ren took Kalden from Lin and she used her airbending to get down. Everyone soon followed her to the courtyard as Ren looked down at Kalden. Ren soon felt everyone hovering her. She crouched down when she saw Hakoda and smiled when he looked at Kalden. He looked at Jinora holding Nivedita and Sky holding Tarak. Hakoda asked if he could hold Kalden and Ren gently handed the small baby over to him. Jinora and Sky soon went to show everyone Nivedita and Tarak. Ren stood back and looked at her four children. She heard her grandfather's words again. Those children are her legacy. She created her mark on the world and they would one day too. She would make sure they wouldn't be known as Avatar Ren's children. People would know them because of things they did. Ren already knew they would do great things.
