Chapter 1

Hiro crept into the silent café, careful not to make any sound. His Megabot gripped tightly in his hands. He made it all the way up the stairs without a single creak. He only had one more thing to do; turn the doorknob to his and Tadashi's room. When he accomplished that, he thought he had successfully entered the house without being spotted. That was until the light flickered on. Tadashi was standing there with his arms crossed, and he had a deep frown on his face. Hiro quickly hid his robot behind his back, but it was too late. Tadashi had already seen it.

"You told me you were done bot fighting." Tadashi said, angry. Hiro winced, bringing Megabot out again.

"I… Lied?" He grinned and shrugged his shoulders sheepishly. Tadashi's frown stayed plastered on his face, and he adopted an angry glint in his eye. Hiro gulped. "But it's no big deal! Those people are too slow to catch me. I can just-" Hiro stopped with a nervous chuckle at the murderous look on his brother's face. Tadashi whirled away from him, pacing.

"Hiro, I'm tired of it!" Tadashi yelled and threw his hands up in frustration. He paused, approaching Hiro. "What if they don't take too kindly to you beating them at their own game? They are at least twice your size Hiro! They could kill you!" Tadashi crouched down to Hiro's level, taking a deep calming breath. "What would I do without you, knucklehead?" Tadashi smiled weakly. Genuine fear shined in his eyes. Hiro rolled his eyes.

"Okay Tadashi. I won't go to anymore bot fights, alright? In return, stop being so stuck up, okay?" Hiro's lips pulled up into a gap-toothed smirk. Tadashi sighed, placing his hand on his face.

"Okay, I'll have to work on that." Tadashi gave him a smile. "Use that big head of yours and stay out of trouble." He grinned at his younger brother and messed up Hiro's crazy black hair.

"Hey!" Hiro protested, moving away. Tadashi chuckled and drew his hand back to his side.

"I have to go to my school to do some things. Stay home, and be safe Hiro. No trouble." Tadashi adopted a serious tone. Hiro breezed past him to sit on his bed.

"Sure, big bro." He smiled and yawned. "I'm getting tired anyways. I think I'll go to sleep when you leave." Hiro replied. Tadashi lifted his keys and hat off the hook on the wall.

"Good night Hiro." Tadashi warmly said. He flicked off the lights on his way out.

"Check on him in a few minutes, make sure he's actually asleep." Tadashi whispered to Cass before he gently closed the front door behind him. The sound of his scooter faded into the distance as he drove away.

As footsteps echoed on the stairs, Hiro closed his eyes, pretending to sleep. He heard the doorknob turn softly as Cass came in to check on him. Once she determined her nephew was indeed sleeping, she shut the door behind her.

"Great! If I hurry, I can make it to the next fight." Hiro jumped out of his bed and grabbed Megabot. He pushed open the window, and a cold breeze lifted the papers on his desk. They fluttered to the floor in his shared room. Hiro winced as his work drifted across the room. He would have to clean that later.

Hiro eased himself down the side of the building until his converse shoes lightly tapped the pavement. He allowed a small smirk form on his face before he sprinted as fast as he could to the next bot fight.

Hiro wove quickly through the tight alleyways of Sanfransokyo. A few people gave him questioning stares, but quickly dismissed him as a troublemaker. Hiro's breath trailed behind him in white wisps. With Megabot tightly gripped in his hands, he made out the crowd of bot fighters.

The bot fights were always in a dangerous part of the town, but it only added to the excitement. Hiro had ignored Tadashi's rant of gang activity in the area, as bot fights were guaranteed to be where the gangs were.

Hiro peeked through the crowd just in time to see a very large bot rip off a smaller bot's head. A large man grinned at his success and took his winnings off the platter. It was Yama. The man wore his standard dark blue hoodie and sweatpants. He was very heavy-set, just like his creation. Hiro took a deep breath and stepped forward.

"Can I try?" He asked in his best timid voice. The crowd whirled to look at him in surprise. He glanced around nervously. "I've got money." He pulled out his crumpled stash of two hundred dollars. Yama bellowed out a laugh, and the others laughed along with him.

"Sure little boy, if you think you can win." Yama placed his money on the platter as well. Hiro placed his Megabot in front of Yama and sat. It slumped to the ground, lifeless until he took control of it.

"Fight!" The woman with the platter announced. Little Yama sprung to life, immediately ripping Megabot into three difference pieces.

"I… don't understand. Can I try again? I have more money." Hiro appeared distraught as he pulled out five hundred more dollars. Yama grinned, and placed his huge stack of cash in with the pile.

"Fight!" The woman yelled once more. Hiro extended his controller before ordering his robot.

"Megabot, destroy." Hiro grinned mischievously. The robot's head flipped around until there was a red face that grinned at his opponent. As Yama's bot swung his revolving blade down, Megabot dodged and counter attacked the much larger bot. It danced gracefully around the razor-sharp blades produced by the larger robot. Hiro pressed one more deciding button. Megabot leaped on top of Little Yama and pulled off the robot's head. Yama stared at his giant robot in disbelief.

"No more little Yama." Hiro said smugly as he pocketed the cash. Yama's face furious as he stood menacingly. He stomped over to the sitting teen and leaned over him. His breath ghosted over the teen's face. Hiro flinched back into the ground, his hands clenching his controller.

"No one hustles Yama!" The adult bellowed before yanking the controller out of Hiro's hand. Yama crushed it in his fist. Pieces of it scattered in the alleyway. Hiro cried out as he watched Yama dropped his destroyed controller. Megabot slumped over, no life left in the small form.

"Hey, don't do anything you'll regret, Yama." Hiro crawled backwards, his breath coming out in desperate gasps. Yama cracked his fists with an evil grin.
