Sabrina shut her suitcase and looked around the room she had shared with Daphne for so many years. There were very few times when she found herself reminiscing about the good times they had in Ferryport Landing instead of dwelling on the bad, and it seemed that now, as she was about to leave for good, the sweet memories finally decided to come back. Pixies, sneaking out, Granny's cooking, weapons and magic training, late nights sitting on the roof under the stars, pranks, kisses… They flooded her, sweet and dusty, in the pale afternoon light.
She put her head in her hands and started to sob. When she accepted the internship for the year, she hadn't realized how much she would be losing. It had been almost as much as a struggle to convince herself to leave, Sabrina thought, as it was getting the job in the first place. But she had ambitions, a life waiting for her outside of the city. There was no way she would give up on the dream in favor of staying here, in the old, depressing home, with a dysfunctional relationship and a silent family.
As she got up off the floor, the door creaked open. Expecting Daphne, she hastily wiped her eyes and put on a bright smile. Instead of the brown hair and wide eyes, however, she saw a familiar mop of blond curls.
"Oh" she said, false smile falling. "It's you."
"Don't sound so enthusiastic" said Puck, with a solemn glance at her suitcase. "I take it you're going, then?"
Sabrina nodded, hesitating to speak. "Yes… I have to leave this place. You understand, right?" She glanced up at him hopefully. They hadn't successfully had a conversation about her departure, and she realized that this could be the last chance they would have to talk.
He shook his head, his eyes shut tightly. "Puck—" she started.
"No, Sabrina, will you listen to me for once?" She started, staring at him, attempting to understand his outburst. "All you ever talk about is leaving, making a new life, your dreams, aspirations, goals, what you think you need to do. You don't realize that you could be happy here, with us, with me. I need you, Sabrina. You keep me sane, you know that?" His green gaze bore into her, pleading. "Don't call me selfish, because I'm not. I just think you need to understand that this is the best place for you. The world is cruel. Just stay here."
His hand reached out for her, to grasp her arm, and hold her back in the world she had dreamed about escaping of so long. Sabrina recoiled.
"How dare you?" she gasped. "All these years, you never cared about what I wanted, did you? All you cared about was getting what you want, and I was too blind to see that." Puck looked at her, tears in his eyes.
"Sabrina, please, listen to me. You think you want this now, but you can get jobs here, and the world is a mess anyway—"
She glared at him. "You are missing the point." She walked to the far wall, gesturing at the poster map of the world. "Look at this! This is a huge world, and I haven't even begun to see it. I want to be out there, helping people, seeing things firsthand." He again tried to interject, resulting in only louder hysterics from the tall blond girl. "Don't you get it? I can't just settle, like you can. I want more from my life than a job at the local pizza dive. And if you can't love and support me, then I'll just have to find a boyfriend who will."
Taking care to be as loud as possible, she dragged her suitcase out the door and stuck her head back in, where the young blond man, once so full of life and mischief, sat crushed on her bed.
"Well?"
"I can't tell you I support this. I'm sorry, Sabrina." he whispered to the flushed face of his girlfriend.
She turned around, biting back tears. "Then this is goodbye. I can't take you with me, where I intend to go." Choosing not to face him a last time, she ran down the stairs, dragging the suitcase behind her, out the front door into the afternoon sunlight.
