It is hard, being the only girl of five children. It is impossible being the only girl of five children when you are a Black. Perfection is expected, rather, it is demanded and nothing less will do. My Mother has nothing to distract her attention away from me, not even for a second. I am her sole responsibility and she doesn't allow me even a moment of solitude. I have been moulded at her will, turned into the perfect prospective wife.

I am a rare commodity.

My blood is pure.

I will be sold to the highest bidder.

The Burke Family. Notoriously of a dark persuasion, my father has secured me as the eldest son's wife. I am to bear his children, satisfy his every need whenever necessary, and ensure that I am never to be seen with so much as a hair out of place. I will honour my parents by doing my duty. I will be the perfect wife for Herbert Burke and should I birth a daughter, I will raise her as my mother raised me.

For the times I am not perfect, the marks that show the displeasure of my husband will stay under the cover of the roof we now share. If I must go out, I will ensure I am perfect once more. I will not disgrace my family by showing the marks that prove my disobedience. It would embarrass my mother, as it would be proof that she did not raise me for the perfection I am capable of.

After all, there is not much that magic cannot cover up.

Even imperfection.
