Morgana can't believe what's happening. This morning she thought that Merlin was just a manservant who she thought was a friend she could rely on. That is until he poisoned her.
Now the sun has set and she found out that he has magic and never told her especially when she needed him the most. As soon as she found out, her anger had gone out of control and he flew into the side of the mountain. He had been dazed but still got up.
"Morgana please, I know you're really angry but listen to me. You cannot take your hate out on Camelot. So many people here trust you, look up to you, and respect you. You cannot kill them because you have a grudge against one, especially if that one person is the king. You know first hand who he really is but they don't and they need their king, now more than ever. Take it out on me, please. I deserve it so much more than them. I'm the one that lied to you but they did not." He says.
"How long have you had magic?" She glares at him.
"My whole life." He says.
"What?" Her voice is very cold. He says nothing and she launches him against the rock again. He's cross-eyed now, but gets up. "What else have you done apart from poisoning me then?" He flinches but that's an old wound.
"That's all I've done towards you." He says.
"And what have you done that was any good?" She spits.
"You don't by any chance remember that witch singer who put you all to sleep?" She nods confused now, "Do you really think that chandelier fell by itself?" He asks. She thinks for a moment. So that was what happened; he saved Arthur even though he was an arrogant prat and was rewarded by becoming his manservant. Then Valiant's shield, the water beast, and all the other things Camelot faced that mysteriously went away. He had helped everyone in Camelot countless times but no one knew.
"Doesn't it make you angry? How no one knows what you're done for them, for everyone?" Even me, she adds silently. His smile is sad, something she thought she would never see from the cheery boy.
"Of course I'm sometimes angry. There are times when I wonder if it's really worth the effort. When you first told me about having magic, I very much wanted to tell you but held back. I know that was such a foolish thing to do. I have also been angry whenever you told me I didn't understand because I do. I've always been living in fear of what I was and when I did use my magic I had to keep it a secret. No one knows what I have done for them. They only know that Arthur is the one who singlehandedly fought the threats Camelot faced." He says. She can see the bitterness in his eyes, the hurt he's felt in the past, all the loneliness. She feels a rush of sympathy for him but she forces that down. "I'm sorry, you don't care about this and you certainly don't need to hear the sad tale of a servant who betrayed and poisoned you. Have you decided yet? Have me get what I deserve and stay in Camelot? Or punish Uther?" His face falls, "What's the point, I'm a lowly servant and my opinion has no worth."
Morgana goes over his words in her mind. He wants her to make the right decision but it seems as if he thinks it's pointless and he's putting himself down as worthless. She may be angry at him for lying to her but she feels even angrier at the thought that he has always puts himself down. "Do you really think that low of yourself?" She asks.
"Why not? Everyone else thinks so and I really am just a servant with special skills." He shrugs, "Well I'll leave you to decide what is right." He makes a move to go.
"Not yet, answer my question about why you lied to me."
"Because everyone told me not to tell you, the dragon, Gaius. They believe that you will be both my and Camelot's downfall. I didn't want to believe it but I did. I believed that keeping Arthur alive was the only thing I should focus on and nothing else. I believed that the dragon knew all and I had to listen to his warnings." He says and she sees blood start to run down his neck and soaking into his clothes.
"Go, before I do anything." She sneers. He stumbles away making his way back to Camelot. Morgana thinks about his words. She knew it was extremely unlikely that she would ever forgive him but she knew that he had no real intent of hurting her. He had also told her everything leaving nothing back, his walls had come down and she could see the pleading in his eyes, the sorrow, the bitterness he felt towards everything, and worst of all, shame. She wondered why he was so ashamed, ashamed of himself for the magic he possessed or lying to her? Then there was his question about why he shouldn't think of himself so lowly. She wonders how bitter he really is about his 's put her in a really difficult situation because Camelot really deserves the punishment. Though he does have a point that not all of them deserve it.
She had been on her way to plot with Morgause about the downfall and the way she had found out Merlin's secret was when he broke her bracelet her sister gave her. Her mind had cleared and she realized that she was being used for her sister's own dreams. She had felt really hurt but the thing that was dominating her mind was Merlin's betrayal.
She sighs and looks from the city of Camelot to the woods. She thinks for another few moments and then the decision is made.
"I still cannot believe that you told Morgana about your magic!" Gaius shouts but still tends to Merlin's head that is bleeding heavily but he doesn't care much about it. His head is riddled with guilt about Morgana. Right before the fury consumed her he had seen the immense betrayal that she had felt and his heart had broken because of it. Over the time where he had listened to her problems and helped her as well, he had developed feelings for her. He always stops himself thinking about that because it's really pointless. He's a servant and she's a Lady and definitely doesn't have any feeling for him. Now she hates him and he wishes she'd just deal with him and not the people of Camelot.
"I didn't exactly tell her but I had known she'd go to Morgause to plan an attack on Camelot so I followed her. I knew there was something off with her bracelet so I broke it as soon as she realized I was following her. She realized what I had done and launched me into the side of a hill the first time. Then she had asked how long I had magic and I said all my life and that was the second time." He says.
"First, why did you tell her everything and second, where were you to be launched against a hill?"
"Once she found out about the magic she was so furious and I couldn't withhold more information because then she would be even more so. If that happened then she would not even think twice about attacking Camelot. When I followed her out she took a more secret way out along a small hill of rock."
"What do you think she'll do now?"
"I don't know, she has two option and I was lucky enough that she even listened to me. The two options are either killing Uther and attacking Camelot, or just coming back here and doing nothing. I honestly think that she won't listen to me though." He sighs.
"If you did break that bracelet, she might realize what she's thinking of doing now and not do it."
"Maybe, but she is still very vengeful towards Uther."
"She has her reasons for that but Morgana is clever, she will not–especially now–recklessly attack us." Gaius reassures.
"Thank you Gaius, I think I'll be going to bed now, goodnight." Merlin gets up and goes into his room.
Morgana sneaks into her room to see Gwen making her bed, "Milady!" She smiles widely, "After the outburst today I thought you had run off. I was slightly worried but I knew that you probably wanted a break from the king." She says. Morgana smiles a real smile at her handmaiden. Gwen is always so caring towards her and that's what she loves about her.
"Yes, I really needed some time to myself. Thank you for making my bed." She says. Gwen nods and then gets her into her nightclothes. She dismisses Gwen before getting into bed. Once again Merlin's face fills her mind. Mostly his sad gaze. Then the certain words fill her head, "Have you decided, have me get what I deserve and stay in Camelot? Or punish Uther?" He had taken her blows with a calm expression and didn't complain or get angry. He had actually encouraged her to take everything out on him, even to kill him. She may have been furious but not enough to kill him in cold blood. She couldn't either because looking back, there was almost no ill intent to attack her. She's guilty now, no, she can't be guilty. Guilt is a weakness that she cannot afford to show, especially not to Merlin. Then there's another emotion, sadness. She had just lost a very good friend. No, she had lost him when he poisoned her and then Morgause took her in. He had truly cared for her and even though he was keeping something from her his concern was always genuine. She thanks the stars that she still has Gwen.
Author's Note
Hello everyone, this is my first fanfic on this site and I really hope you enjoy it! I encourage you to leave reviews. Constructive criticism is welcomed and questions are also encouraged. As you can already see, this story will have some of the previous events in the show either exaggerated or left out so if you need some clearing up on that just ask.
At the moment it may not be so obvious as to why it is a hurt/comfort fic but as the story progresses it will become more obvious.
Please review, I would love to read the feedback I'll get for this fanfic.
