Chapter 1: Knock, Knock!

Beep! Beep! Beep! That was the first sound I heard when I woke up that morning. I rolled over and looked at my alarm clock. ''Grrrrr,'' I groaned, as I reached for the clock to try and find the off switch. I scrambled around for it, still half asleep. It probably wouldn't have been that hard to find, had I actually used my alarm clock on a regular basis just like any other person. But the thing was, I wasn't just any other person. I was home schooled. That meant I woke up whenever I felt like it. There was no need for me to have a set wake up time. Which was why it puzzled me why my alarm clock would ring in the first place. I never remembered setting it-I had no reason to. Nonetheless, I got it to stop ringing and dragged myself out of bed.

I walked down the hall to check inside various bedrooms to see if the unexpected alarm had woken any of my family members up. First I checked my brothers' room. They were both sleeping. Then I checked my sisters' room. They were both sleeping as well. I even checked my mom's room. She, as well my baby brother (whom was laying right next to my mom at that moment) were both fast asleep. I sighed with relief.

Then I trudged into the dining room to begin my normal home school routine. I was wide awake now, so I figured there was no use in trying to go back to sleep. Why waste precious hours tossing and turning when I could be getting work done instead? So I sat down in my favorite chair, booted up my laptop, and waited for my screen to load. I smiled when my desktop background came onto the screen. Two characters from my favorite anime were on it. The anime, Black Butler, was a show my best friend had gotten me into a few months back. It was about a boy, Ciel Phantomhive, whose parents died during a mysterious fire. Ciel, who at that time had been going through intense agony and despair, made a deal with a demon; revenge on those who disgraced him in exchange for his soul. The demon accepted this deal and made a contract with Ciel. Ciel named the demon Sebastian, and Sebastian became Ciel's loyal slave until Ciel achieved his goal of revenge. Of course, Sebastian disguised himself as a butler, so he would fit in more with his surrounding Victorian society. It made quite an interesting storyline. At least, I thought it did. That's why I constantly obsessed over it. (And picked it for my PC background.)

Before I got too absorbed in my background, I opened up the internet and went to the website that I do my schoolwork on. I groaned as I realized my math work was due today. Why must math be so hard? I thought.

But just as I was starting to get into my lesson, I heard a knock on the front door. Must be a delivery man, I thought. They always seemed to come at the most inappropriate times. It was usually the early morning, when no one else was up but me, or when I ate dinner with my family, when we all too busy eating to answer the door.

I figured they'd just go away and leave the package by the front door like they usually did, but the knocking persisted. I rolled my eyes. Didn't the delivery guys know that people were sleeping at this hour? I got up from my seat and strolled over to the nearest window to see just what delivery company had sent this annoying guy over. But when I looked outside, I didn't see a delivery truck. Nor did I see any type of transportation vehicle for that matter. I got closer to the window to see if I could make out who exactly was knocking on the door, but I didn't appear anyone was there.

That's strange, I thought. Either this person is really tiny, or my eyes are starting to go. I walked over to the door to see if I could peek through the peep hole and see who was there. But before I could do that, something quite peculiar caught my eye. Something was sticking out from the crack underneath door, and it was getting pushed inside the house. I stood there dumbstruck, as the object got slid through the crack, right onto the doormat. I raced to the door and picked it up. It was a big white envelope, with a red wax seal on the back. On the front, printed in very neat cursive, was my address. And it had my name on it. But there was no return address.

Before I could examine it any further, I peeked through the peephole to see if the person who had pushed it through was still there. I saw no one. Without thinking, I unlocked the door and took a step outside. I scanned the front yard, but there was no trace anyone had been there. How could they have gotten away so fast? I thought. That's when I looked down and realized I was still in my pajamas. I quickly stepped back inside and locked the door, hoping that no one outside had seen me. I sank down to the floor and stared at the envelope I was holding. I didn't know who had sent this to me, but whoever they were wanted to make sure I got it. And it seemed they didn't care what means they had to use to get it to me either.
