"Steve! Help!" Black Widow screamed. Her voice was caught in the roar from the burst of white light, leaving Steve Rogers and Loki Laufeyson desperate and confounded, staring at the resulting blank space left behind a moment later.
"Where did she go?" Loki whispered to himself.
"NATASHA!" Steve called, running to the edge of the crumbling space cliff that remained after the light blast.
There was nothing beyond it.
He spun and charged Loki, gripping the demigod's throat in his hand before the Asgardian had a chance to conjure up his illusions.
"What did you do?" Steve growled.
Loki stared at Steve, the fury in his eyes mimicked Thor's when he had learned Loki was impersonating Odin all those years.
"What did you do to her?!" Steve screamed, his fist tightening around Loki's throat.
"Nothing," Loki hissed."The mystery lingers for us both, Rogers."
Steve did not release him and Loki marveled at the mortal's strength. Whatever experiments Tony Stark had been doing to recreate Thor, they had worked.
"Let him go, Steve." the familiar voice of Ragnarok called.
Loki's eyes slid to his left to find his adoptive brother's doppelganger android standing as valiantly as Thor ever had. Steve's grip was beginning to loosen when another roaring flash of light blinded the trio.
When the light subsided, a feminine figure remained.
"Steve?" she whispered. Her voice did not belong to Natasha, but was familiar to Steve nonetheless.
He tossed Loki aside and moved closer to her.
"Steve?" she said again.
Steve's jaw dropped as she came into view.
"Peggy?" he whispered. "Peggy is that you?"
"Have I died? Is this heaven, Steve?" she asked.
Her eyes remained locked on his.
"No. This is... this is space, Peggy." Steve said.
"Space?" she asked. "Is this a trick? Is this Howard's doing?"
Steve was in front of her now. He reached out his hand to her face and it trembled for a moment before he touched her. They both exhaled tears at his touch.
"You died, Steve. You died." Peggy uttered.
"I can't die, Peg. I can't get drunk and I can't die." Steve laughed in spite of himself. Peggy laughed too.
"If you're not dead, and I'm not dead, then where are we and what are we doing here?" Peggy asked.
"Well, funny you should ask..." Steve began, not knowing where to start.
"Incoming!" Ragnarok yelled.
Steve spun around to see Nebula moving in on them.
"Hold onto me!" he commanded to Peggy.
She flung her arms around his waist and gripped him tightly, as if she would never let go. When Steve began to run full speed towards the other side of the strange rock they were on, Peggy's trust in him faltered. He jumped off the end of the cliff and Peggy let out a scream.
Before she could process they were not plummeting to their deaths, she found herself face to face with a garnet and gold humanlike robot.
"Get her to Ship, Tony." Steve yelled.
"Who's this broad?" the robot man, Tony, replied. His voice sounded familiar to Peggy, but she could not place why.
"Long story. Just get her in the spaceship." Steve said hastily.
"Aye aye, Captain." Tony said, his left arm moving around Peggy's waist. "Sorry for the touching." he said to her.
Steve rolled off of the robot and landed on a moving rock. At least Peggy thought it was a rock. As she stared back at him, she realized it was some sort of vehicle and he was flying it towards the fight.
"JARVIS, open up Ship for us." Tony said.
"Jarvis?" Peggy asked, jerking her head towards the aircraft ahead of them. The cargo door opened and Tony flew them inside.
"Where's Edwin?" Peggy demanded once her feet where on the floor.
"Who the hell is Edwin?" the Tony robot asked.
"Edwin Jarvis." Peggy said.
"No... no. What was your name again?" he asked in a strange voice, almost as if he were human.
"Agent Carter. Who are you?" she said tersely.
Tony flipped up his visor and Peggy gasped as she realized he was a human.
"Tony Stark, the Iron Man." he said.
"Tony... Stark?" Peggy asked.
"Who's this girl? I like her 20th century Terran vibe." Peggy heard a man say, but when she turned no one was there.
"It's Agent Carter. Cap found her." Tony said.
"I'm Rocket, pleasure." the voice said. It was coming from below her. Peggy looked down and saw a raccoon.
"Is that a talking raccoon?" Peggy asked.
"What the hell is a raccoon?" Rocket asked. "And I'm right here, thanks."
"Sorry," Peggy said. "I've just never met..."
"Anyone like me. I know. I'm one of kind. Perfection. The best. Uniquely handsome. I've heard it all." Rocket grinned.
"Have you heard 'egotistical arse'?" Peggy asked him with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, yes I have." he said with a laugh. Rocket looked at Tony and added, "She's gonna fit in all right."
"Where did you come from, Agent?" Tony asked her.
"New York."
"That's funny. You're from New York." Rocket said to Tony.
"Your last name is Stark?" Peggy said, ignoring Rocket's aside. "You wouldn't happen to know Howard Stark, would you?"
Tony looked at her as if she'd lost her mind.
"Nevermind." Peggy said.
"This just got awkward." Rocket said. "Listen, Agent lady, we gotta get inside Ship's belly. It ain't safe out here. And Tony's gotta get back out there to kill Nebula before Thanos finds a way back from the abyss and we all die."
"I know Howard." Tony said softly to Agent Carter, ignoring Rocket's demands. "How do you know him?"
"He's my friend." Peggy said.
"Is?" Tony asked.
"Yes, I was just speaking to him moments ago in New York. Then there was a flash of light and some red headed woman appeared. She was yelling for Steve. I didn't realize it was my Steve."
"Did she saying anything else?" Tony asked.
"She told me and Howard to take her back. That she had to go back to her son."
Tony sighed.
"Where am I, really?" Peggy asked.
"You're just outside Sanctuary II, the old stomping grounds of Thanos. It's a warzone. But I think you're familiar with those, if you're who I think you are."
"Oh?" she asked.
"You're Margaret Carter aren't you? You go by Peggy, though, with your friends." Tony said.
Peggy looked at him with an unreadable expression.
"You knew me as a kid." Tony said.
Peggy scrutinized him for a moment. He looked just like Howard, perhaps a little older.
"Tony, as in...Anthony?" Peggy said, her eyes widening as she realized he was Howard's son.
"Yeah," Tony said.
"But you're..."
"All grown up. Yeah." he said. "It's 2019, Peggy."
"What?" Peggy said.
"I hate to cut this charming reunion short, but we need to move." Rocket said in an anxious tone.
"Tony! Where the hell are you?" Steve's voice came in through a speaker system in the ship.
"Catch you later, Miss Margaret." Tony said to Peggy as if he had never aged since the last time he had seen her when he was twelve.
He flipped down his visor and said into it, "On my way, Cap. You didn't tell me Peggy could time travel."
