A/N: So this is a thing I came up with. I just love the story and the world behind Dishonored so much, So i looked around to see if there was another fic of this type and there didn't seem to be, so lets begin shall we?
Edit: I wrote this at 4 in the morning. So now that I have safely pulled my head out of my ass, most, if not all of the grammar problems are fixed
Prologue: Whiskey & Cigars
Night had fallen on Dunwall Tower, the cool winds of mid-winter were flowing through the air and the soft rustle of bushes could be heard. In the night, among the guardsman and shadows walked a lone figure, slouched in worry and grief.
Only one thing was on Ruby Rose's mind at that moment, and that was "Where was she?" Over and over these words yelled in her mind. "I had ONE job!" She cursed under her breath. Her mind flashed back to that day, all those months ago when she was put in charge of the Empresses protection. How long had it been, seven months now? "And now she's just up and disappeared under MY watch!" she growled in frustration and rushed through the gardens along the side of the mansion.
Weiss watched from a window perched high along the side of Dunwall Tower. She looked into the night to see her brooding bodyguard Ruby marching about the estate, trying desperately to find her.
She pulled away from the window, leaning back into one of the chairs she'd pulled into the room. A small, secret hideaway from before her time. A place where she'd come when the countries problems drove her to hiding. But tonight, she hid for a very different reason.
Moving up the stairs quickly and silently, Ruby rushed around the second floor of the manor before moving through each room, inspecting every corner and crevice in a haste. As she made her way up to the third floor, she stopped. This was where Weiss and her had their first… "interaction"
She quickly shook the memories from her head, and proceeded up the stairs. as she reached the top a series of thoughts shook her mind. Did she.. feel something for the Empress? Losing track of her made her heart clench and her mind race, this was normal for a bodyguard, but Ruby found herself feeling something more.
In the seven months she'd been her guard, they'd shared a few conversations, Weiss was cold, and upfront about things. However, around Ruby she seemed to open up slightly. Ruby halted her search as the evidence compiled in her mind.
On a couple of occasions the Empress would come to her to vent about her problems, they would talk on long, diplomatic trips, they even shared a cigar a few weeks ago. The red-headed bodyguard let her elbows lean on the counter, and rested her head in her hands, running her gloved fingers through her disheveled hair. Sighing heavily, 'I can't deny it, I.. without a doubt feel something for Weiss..' her thoughts drifted once again to that afternoon at the stairwell..
"UGH! Where is that damned fool!" Weiss yelled at no-one in particular.
Ruby stood in the corner, among the shadows as she always does, watching and guarding the shouting Empress.
"M'lady.. I'm sure he's just late is all, he'll make good time I assure you." Simon, Weiss's schedule manager, said as he desperately tried to quell the enraged woman.
"I can't go to this dance if I haven't danced in.. what's it been? Two years? Three!?"
Ruby grinned from the corner of the foyer, Simon was getting his due. She'd seen him steal wine from the kitchen during afternoons like this.
"Just get out! I need to think of something…"
Simon quickly scampered off into the courtyard of the manor. Leaving the Empress alone with her bodyguard.
Weiss stood there for a moment, one arm across her chest, holding up the other arm that cradled the side of her head. Ruby just stood quietly until Weiss let her arms fall as she suddenly looked over to the corner she stood in. Weiss looked at her in frustration for a few moments, and she had to admit, even through the years of military training, the Empress' stair unsettled her a bit.
"Could you be useful for once and help me, Ruby?"
Ouch.
"What is it you require, m'lady?"
"You wouldn't know how to dance at all would you?"
Ruby blinked 'Did she just ask me to dance with her?'
Weiss watched a slight blush appear on her bodyguards face. Making one appear on her own face. The idea of dancing with Ruby didn't… displease her.
"I suppose… my sister taught me a bit when I was younger."
Weiss sighed "It's better than nothing." She held her hand out.
Cautiously and unsure of herself, Ruby walked forward, removed her gloves, and placed her hand in Weiss'
Being the taller of the two, Ruby took the customary place of the man in the dance, resting one hand on Weiss' hip while the other held both their hands above their shoulders. They stood their for a moment, until Weiss slowly inched Ruby along in the dance. As they gently spun around the foyer, Weiss noticed that Ruby held her head low, staring at the floor between them.
"I believe it's customary to look at the woman you're dancing with" She said, showing a smug smile.
Ruby jerked her head up to look at Weiss, their eyes met, and they both noted the others beautiful iris'. Weiss's were a cool blue, indicadent of royalty, while Ruby's were a hard silver, like a steel blade.
Then, for just a little while, the two spun around the room in perfect silence, never wavering, never faltering, and always staring deeply into the others eyes. Weiss was the first to speak, in an almost entranced tone.
"Thank you Ruby… They'd… eat me alive for not being able to do something-"
"As silly as dance" Ruby finished for her.
They both smiled at each other as they slowly stopped dancing. Weiss felt a stressful exhaustion wash over her, as she let her head to rest against Ruby's shoulder. Ruby slowly slid her hand around Weiss' waste, gently pulling them into a warm embrace. Ruby's arms locked around Weiss' back, and Weiss' did the same.
Ruby looked down at Weiss, her long, straight, snow white hair complimented her outfit nicely. A set of high-quality white dressing clothes, not too tight on her fragile frame, but not too loose either. She thought it was funny how small the Empress looked against her own bodyguard.
…
….
…..
'What the hell am I doing?'
'What the hell am I doing?!'
Blushing hard, Ruby and Weiss let go and walked backwards from each other, mumbling apologies along the way. The only difference being that Weiss didn't have a grand staircase set behind her.
In a sudden swoop of air, and a heavy slam to the ground, Ruby was on her back, having tripped against the steps of the staircase. Weiss stopped, caught between thoughts of retreat and thoughts of helping up Ruby, when suddenly she heard the doors to the foyer begin to open. Darting her eyes around to see the dance instructor come rushing in along with a flurry of apologies.
Quickly turning again, this time towards the staircase only to see her red-headed bodyguard had fled, leaving nothing but empty space to stare at.
'Damn, she's quick.'
By the time the memory completed, Ruby had made her way through the rest of the second floor, and was about to enter the Empress' bedroom. She stopped to consider the time that had passed.
'Only a couple days now...'
She held her breath as she knocked quietly against the wood.
…
….
'Come in, Ruby'
Sighing in relief, she quickly twisted the knob and opened the door to see Weiss standing there, arms held in front of her, as if Ruby hadn't been running around the estate for the last ten minutes trying to find her.
And that's when Ruby noticed the odd thing about the room. The book case along the right side was swung open from the wall, into what appeared to be another room.
Weiss looked a little nervous by Ruby's account.
"Would you care t… to join me?" Weiss said, gesturing to the room behind the bookshelf.
"M-My lady.. are you s-"
"My name is Weiss… Call me that, please."
Ruby paused for a moment, shocked at what she was hearing. Lowering her head slightly she spoke.
"Yes M... Weiss." she corrected
The room was small and rectangular, to one side there was a window that looked out over the cliffside that Dunwall Tower sat upon. To the left of the small window was a fireplace, that was crackling with heat as ash and embers sparked off of it. Just in front of the fireplace were two large leather chairs, a small table in between them.
And that's when Ruby noticed what at on the table.
Two cigars, two crystalline glasses, and a bottle of fine whiskey imported from a kingdom hundreds of miles away. Sitting at the far end of the table was something that made Ruby's eyes widen in shock. A clear glass dish with seven chocolate-chip cookies on them. Chocolate was worth its weight in gold in Dunwall.
'How did she get those?'
"How did you get those?"
"Your sister told me about your sweet tooth, so I had them shipped in."
As quick as her legs would carry her, Ruby rushed over to the plate of cookies, snatching one in each hand, she quickly took a bite from one and chewed, letting herself get engrossed in the long-lost taste. She heard the book-case lock back in place behind her and Weiss plop down in the leftmost leather seat.
Ruby awkwardly walked around the arrangement, and sat down in the rightmost chair.
"Sooo… what's going on Weiss?" Ruby said, before stuffing the rest of the cookie into her mouth.
"Ruby I...I just wanted to talk to you…"
"This is a pretty neat room you got here…" Her voice was muffled with cookie crumbs
Weiss smiled warmly at her bodyguard,
'I finally got her to open up…' Weiss smiled smugly to herself
"Thank you"
"So whatted ya wanna talk about?"
Weiss' muscles stiffened, Ruby noticed that. Her body language told of a sudden wave of nervousness washing over her.
"I… I wanted to say sorry. About what happened a couple days ago…"
Ruby didn't smoke, but she'd heard a lot about these imported cigars. She was reaching for the one laid out for her just as Weiss said this.
"It was foolish of me, and I was acting childish."
Ruby stopped, and concededly slumped against the chair, staring down into her lap. And after a moment's pause, she spoke in a shaky, nervous tone.
"I should be the one saying sorry, Weiss… I should be protecting you… Not.. not having feelings… for you."
Weiss looked over to Ruby, shocked by her words. The red headed girl was gripping the arms of the chair hard, staring down at the ground in fear.
Ruby looked up at Weiss, and quickly stood up, taking a step towards the door, only to encounter the Empresses body blocking her way. Before Ruby could react, she felt Weiss' hands grip the back of her neck, and wrap around her waist, pulling her into a kiss.
Ruby could feel her heartbeat in her throat, it was fast, faster than she'd been trained to let it get. Feeling a tremendous weight lift from her shoulders, Ruby suddenly embraced Weiss in her arms, holding her tight against her body, intensifying the already passionate kiss.
After what felt like a blissful eternity, Weiss separated from Ruby, and stared into her eyes. A mixture of lust and deep feelings shone in both the
"Ruby, as your Empress, I order you to sit in here, with me, have a cigar, and talk."
An instinctive happiness, long buried by training found its way to the surface, letting Ruby smile a shining, genuine smile down at Weiss.
"I think I'd like that…"
