When Toby woke up in the morning, the first thing he noticed was that Happy was gone. Well, the first thing he noticed was that he was too old to sleep on the floor anymore and needed to invest in a couch, but Happy being missing was a close second.
When he realized his bed was empty, Toby practically ran to the washing machine. When he realized that the machine was empty, Toby actually did run back to his room. His eyes scanned the room for his gray shirt, and when he didn't see that he settled for picking up the folded piece of paper on the already made bed.
Went out for coffee, see you at the garage.
-H
Toby pursed his lips and read the notes 2, 3 more times. Not written in haste, no signs of nervous tremors in hand, the note was not planned, but it wasn't completely after thought. She probably didn't want to make the decision about the shirt in front of him. Toby didn't blame her; it wasn't easy to let a guy down, let alone one that she had to know loved her.
He glumly got ready the day, spinning a hat onto his head as he walked out the door and down the stairs to his car. He hopped in the truck and couldn't help but flashback to the meteor shower, only one day ago.
He put the truck in park in front of the garage and couldn't help but feel a little bit of hope as he raced into the building.
Bursting through the door, he searched around wildly before having his dreams dashed again. Happy wasn't here yet. Paige was the only one who seemed to notice his distress and he caught her eyes as he scanned the room.
"Is Happy with you?" Paige mouthed from the other side of the room. Toby shook his head and Paige came over, "I can't get ahold of her, her apartment building said she wasn't going to be there for a while… I mean, she's usually here before ANY of you, do you know where-"
Toby cut Paige off with a wave of his hand, "She was at my place last night…" Paige's mouth dropped open and Toby backtracked, "No, not like that it's just—can you tell me when she gets here?" Paige nodded and Toby walked dejectedly towards his station. He opened up some patient files and began filling prescriptions, making phone calls, and peeling through research papers. Anything to keep him busy.
Maybe 10 minutes later, Toby's phone buzzed. It was Paige, Happy was coming in the building now. Toby sat down his books and put his hands flat on the desk, taking a couple of deep breaths before spinning his chair around to face the rest of the garage. He spotted Happy in seconds.
She was turned away from him, talking with Paige and Walter, but he studied the back of her body. Black skinny jeans and combat boots, normal. Hair down and hanging loosely on the back of her…plaid shirt. Toby sighed, knowing he had to keep his promise now. He would try his best to not make it awkward for anyone else when he all the sudden "lost interest" in the girl of his dreams, but he knew that his peers (some of the smartest people in the world) would catch on. He was so lost in thought he almost didn't see it.
Happy turned away from her conversation with the other team members and walked towards her station, barely looking in Toby's direction, but oh was he looking at her. He watched, practically breathless as she adjusted the sleeve of the gray T-shirt slightly too large for her small frame; the one she wore now, tucked into her jeans, a plaid shirt thrown on top of it. Toby's hands were shaking as he watched her settle in to her station. She kept it. She kept his shirt.
He stood quickly, his chair spinning back behind him, and walked swiftly to her work space. She pretended not to notice that he was coming in her direction, instead focusing on sorting different screws into bins, occasionally throwing stripped ones into her recycled metal pot.
Toby wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her against him, Happy was fine with it of course, but he wasn't getting her that easily. She elbowed him in the gut before he could say anything. She smirked as he doubled over in laughter and pain, "Nice to know some things never change Haps."
"Listen Doc," the woman replied, turning to face him and leaning on her desk, "I'm keeping the shirt. Now you keep your word."
This time Happy let him take her hand, "I would never break a promise to you Happy." It was sweet, but the moment didn't last long. Happy rolled her eyes, shaking his hand away. Toby thought he heard her mutter something like you sappy idiot but couldn't be sure. He chuckled and practically waltzed back to his desk, the shrink was on cloud 9 right now.
Happy watched the man out of the corner of her eye as he flipped through several books sitting in front of him, amused at the grin which never left his face. Toby was soon called over by ralph who needed help with some last minute homework.
Without the distraction of his presence, Happy returned to her screw sorting, she realized she needed another bin. Shrugging she headed to Toby's desk to see if he had anything she could use. As she poked through his drawers and shelves, she noticed a framed picture under a pile of papers. Happy pulled it out and her eyebrows shot up instantaneously. She recognized this moment, thanks to the way her brain worked, as the first day she joined scorpion. It was the team's first attempt at a group picture. She knew the photo had been discarded by unanimous vote, because Collins was in it, and would never have thought Toby would keep it.
Happy examined the photo more. Walter didn't smile in it, not like he did now anyways, Sly stood off to the side with shoulders hunched, a confused expression on his face as he looked at Toby. The mechanics eyes shifted to the image of his face, mouth slightly opened, head tilted, eyes wide, and light like no other shinning from them… and he was staring at her, "He was in love with me already…" Happy whispered.
"Took you long enough to realize." Happy turned, surprised to see Toby standing a little ways off, hands in his pockets, a sheepish smile on his face, "I couldn't get rid of it. I mean, that moment was the first time I saw you. We didn't get introduced before the picture was taken and I was….awed." Happy smiled at his use of the words Walter used to describe his infatuation with her.
Happy pursed her lips, "Toby…" the shrink lifted his eyes to her as she spoke, "I… I think I might love you too." She was looking at the ground now, brow knit together, but looked up sharply as Toby replied.
"I know." he barked out a laugh, "I know you're in love with me Happy. I've known for a while. When did you figure it out?"
Happy considered the question carefully, "The stars." She decided finally.
Toby's grin was brighter than that meteor shower ever could be, "Part of Perseids must have fallen on us that night." He didn't know how she would react but he held out his hand to her. She stared at it for a moment before sighing and taking it. He smirked and pulled her to him, she didn't resist this time, "It's just like a fairytale." And with that he leaned down to capture her lips with his.
It was nice getting a redo from Valentine's Day, and Happy was sure not to hesitate this time. She eagerly lifted her chin to meet his mouth. She brought her arms up to wrap around his neck as Toby dropped one of his to her lower back. One of Toby's hands stayed on Happy's jaw, while both of hers tugged at his hair.
Toby tilted his head even more; sliding his tongue passed her lips and felt Happy's knees give out momentarily. He smiled against her lips with raised eyebrows, he made her react this much, and he loved it.
Quickly, Toby walked forwards, lifting her onto his desk, pushing in between her legs. He gently grasped her face and their lips met even more fervently. Happy sighed against him and leaned in to him as he pushed forward even more. She hesitantly wrapped her legs around his waist and then it was Toby's turn to let out a short breathe as he felt her thighs rub his sides.
"God I love y—" the statement had barely left Toby's mouth when Walter walked back into the garage.
Mr. 197 had to do a double take when he saw them tangled up at Toby's station, "Hey! Happy, Toby! P—plea- please not in the garage!" Happy tilted her forehead against Toby's and they both chuckled as Walter stumbled to find words. Happy unwrapped her legs from Toby's waist as he removed his hands from where they were sneaking underneath her shirt. He stepped back and took a deep breathe of Happy free air. The woman in question leaned back on her hands, still sitting on Toby's desk.
"Sure thing boss." She answered, swinging her feet. Walter left the room red faced. Happy hopped off the desk and wrapped her arms around Toby in a sweet embrace, something he better not get used to. Toby responded immediately, sliding his arms around the mechanic and leaning his chin on the top of her head. She sighed into his shirt and looked up at him, "Your right, maybe it is a bit like a fairytale." She gave a quick peck and with that walked away.
Toby watched her go, a smile on his face as he watched her fix the sleeve on the gray T-shirt, slightly too big for her small frame.
