New Year's Resolution
He had to hand it to Jessica; the woman knew how to throw a party. Of course, that came with the job. To be a good lawyer, you had to be a social genius. To be a great lawyer, you had to make other people think they were social geniuses – and that is why, Jessica had rented the nicest hall, ordered the most expensive champagnes, hired the best DJ, and ordered from the most prestigious catering company she could find. Everyone was dancing and drinking and talking to people they would have never spoken to under regular circumstances. Everyone seemed to have grown in confidence – from dwarf to giant – all in the first minutes of the party.
The music was loud enough to dance to, but quiet enough that conversation could be easily held for even the tipsiest of associates. Everywhere, people were showing their new "no fear – new year's resolution" selves. Even Harvey.
Harvey had been sitting back with Donna, drinking the fanciest, girliest drink that the red head could find on the menu – having convinced Harvey that if he wasn't going to buy her a new year's gift, he was going to have to drink what she was drinking and embarrass himself in front of everyone (joke was on her though, everyone was partying too hard to notice) – and discussing whatever goals each other had for the new year. Harvey's were minimal – you know, the usual, be awesome, have crazy washboard abs, get lots of grown up time – but Donna's were carefully thought out and planned. She was going to start doing yoga – on top of her three-days-a-week-pilates – and was going to start performing again. There were others in her list, but they were too long for even her to spell out after this much alcohol.
Harvey listened to her go on about how she was going to be the star in a big showcase, but somehow found his eyes drifting off towards where his associate was seated at the bar, talking to Louis, a big goofy smile plastered on his face. It never ceased to take Harvey's breath away, just how happy Mike always seemed to be. No matter what was happening – or what had happened to him – Mike always wore this contagious positive attitude that – not that he'd admit it out loud, although he'd finally begun to admit it quietly to himself – made Harvey feel safe. He could feel a proud smile reach his eyes as he watched the kid, loose and relaxed. He'd needed this. They both had. Hell, everyone had. It was in that moment that he set a firm decision on what his new year's resolution would be for that year. He was finally going to show Mike just how much he meant to him. It might have been the alcohol talking – he really had had a lot – but for once he wasn't worried in the slightest about going through with it. He knew that Mike had feelings for him – whether he knew about them or not. He just had to bring them to the surface.
Eventually Norma had arrived at their table, and after a few minutes, Harvey excused himself, leaving the two secretaries to their gossip. He approached the bar, giving a quick, smiling greeting to Louis, before ordering two shots. He was pleased when Louis found the time to be distracted by Harold's drunkenly confident antics. He finally had Mike to himself. "Cheers," he offered, handing Mike the tequila.
"Look at you, losing control." Mike sniggered but took the shot with him. "You should do this more often."
"Yeah, yeah." Harvey sighed, amused. He took his elbow and dragged him onto the floor, smirking at the innocent confusion on the younger's face. "Dance with me?" He asked, arrogance flooding every word.
Mike smiled, placing his hands on his boss' waist.
"No, no, no," Harvey scolded, moving them to his shoulders.
"Aw, Harvey!" He whined, slumping into him. The older man chuckled and began to rock them side to side, swaying carefully to the smooth jazz that began to play. "Why can't I be the man for once?"
He couldn't help the smile that tugged at his lips when the associate gasped, pleasantly surprised by the nibble he felt on his ear. "Because I have too much pride to publically be the woman, and you love me enough to set yours aside."
Mike laughed. "Oh, is that so? I love you now, do I?"
"Yes, you do." The words were whispered warmly against his ear, sending a shiver down his spine. Harvey's grin widened as he let some of his weight rest against his dance partner.
"Hmm, maybe you're right." It came out almost as a sigh, and to Harvey, it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard.
"That's ok, I forgive you."
"Oh really?" Mike retorted sarcastically.
"Mhm, because I love you too."
When Mike tried to pull back, Harvey tugged him closer and rested their foreheads against each other. It wasn't lost on him that Mike's breathing had grown quicker, and he had tensed in Harvey's arms. This wasn't how it was supposed to go...
"Mike?"
"Yeah?" The words sounded choked, panicked almost.
Harvey frowned. "Happy new year." He whispered, as if signalling the room to begin their countdown. He decided to reward himself for the impeccable timing later. For now, he was whispering the numbers, and tapping a finger against Mike's hip with every count. "9, 8, 7," he whispered.
"6, 5, 4," Mike said with him, suddenly into it. He was smiling now, fingers playing with the edges of Harvey's collar.
"3, 2," but he didn't let them finish. Instead, he crushed his lips forward onto Mike's and worried them until they parted, allowing him access. He smiled against him as the kiss was returned, and pulled the associate closer – if it were possible.
When the cheers began to subside, he pulled back, looking happier than ever into worried eyes. "I really do Mike."
He nodded in response. "Happy new year." He replied. Harvey went to return the sentiment, but was meant by a slow, soft kiss.
Not even a second in, and he'd already met his first resolution. Yes, he could tell this year was going to be one of the best yet.
