Fifty Shades of Alternate Universe
Chapter Ten
Awkward…
Ana sat on the couch facing the kitchen, waiting for some sort of reaction from Kate. Ana bit her lip, unsure of the silence between them. Normally they would have a fight or bicker at each other, but when Ana told her that she would have to move out… Kate said…
Nothing.
It had been almost an hour, and at first Ana was impressed, to say the least, that she had literally rendered Kate speechless. Now, she wanted noise. Yelling, or screaming, something, to break the awkward silence in the room.
"I could always wait a day or so… I don't think Gail would mind." Ana whispered, averting her eyes when Kate seemed to finally come back to reality. Kate looked directly to Ana, tears threatening to spill across her cheeks.
"This is just so sudden, Ana. Why do you need to live there? Can't you come back each night?" Kate asked quietly, her hands clenching against the countertop.
"I can come home on the weekends, but he said I'd be there on the Weekdays. I guess that's why the pay is so good." Ana shrugged her shoulders, tucking her hair behind her ear.
"How generous." Kate hissed, shaking her head immediately as if ashamed of herself.
"Kate, I need to do something. If I had been able to find a publishing job, or even a secretary's job… I would have taken that. This, though, is all I've been able to find. Plus, it's a hell of a paycheck."
Kate nodded, moving from the counter to go and sit next to her friend, placing her hand on her knee.
"I just didn't think we'd be separated so quickly. I was hoping to spend a little time with you before we 'grew up.'" Kate smiled softly, reaching over to envelop her friend in a hug. "I might not like it, but you're doing what's best for you. I just hope you won't forget about me here and see me on the weekends."
"Kate, I already told you I would." Ana interrupted, returning Kate's embrace. Ana was surprised at how accepting Kate was being, and had been expecting a bit more of a fight. "You're taking this better than I thought. Who are you…"
"It's nothing of importance, at least, not yet." Kate grinned, unable to keep a secret from her best friend. "I'll tell you when I know how serious it is." Kate smiled, kissing the top of Ana's head. "You should get back and get your contract figured out. Then come home, and we'll go celebrate!" Kate left the couch, going into the bathroom and shutting the door. The sound of running water soon followed. Letting go of the breath she had been holding, Ana leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling.
Well, at least she knew Kate would be okay while she was gone. She could only hope that her newest piece of man candy would treat her well, and not leave her the sobbing mess she usually ended up as.
Pulling out her phone, Ana sent a text to Gail to let her know she would be returning shortly to discuss the job specifics in detail. She wanted a shower, and a change of clothes. Now that she had the job, she didn't need to wear this slinky dress again. She blushed, remembering how easily he had been able to take it off of her.
She only hoped he wouldn't be too mad at her for rejecting his offer. While she didn't regret having sex with Christian, she chastised herself that it was not the way to start a working relationship. Yet, she still wanted to be with him. Maybe not a romantic relationship, but a friends with benefits sort of thing. She couldn't deny the attraction she felt towards him, and while she didn't usually condone sleeping around, she couldn't help but feel that it was different with him. She didn't feel like she had a one night stand, but she didn't feel like a love stricken heroine, either.
Was it wrong of her to want to have sex with Christian Grey again? He was probably peeved at her for her teasing this morning, but in all honesty, she would have done it again if it would have ticked him off. The way his mouth opened, and how he had been utterly speechless. She loved it when he looked confused. He could be so incredibly sexy at times, and then so cute in a just a few seconds. Her heart fluttered as she thought of him, her face warming.
She groaned, letting her head fall into her open palms. She couldn't start having feelings for this man. He was her boss, not her boyfriend. He wouldn't have these feelings for her. He thought she was attractive, and he only wanted her physically. Realistically, she wouldn't be a good match for him.
As she looked in her closet for an outfit that wouldn't be inappropriate, but would still look nice, she tried to make her mind up. Should she sleep with him again, or should she just block him out of her personal life once and for all? She couldn't deny that she wanted to see him again, and that she held some sort of feelings for her, but were they okay to be having? Would he have the same ones? Groaning, Ana reprimanded herself once more.
Boss. Christian Grey is my boss.
