Annabeth walked into the office, smiling tightly at the secretary behind the counter. It felt wrong. She felt like she shouldn't be able to make that expression anymore. It didn't seem fair.

But she put on a brave face. She hadn't cried since she left the apartment. Her make-up was gone by now, but she had put more mascara on before she left to come to the school. She was walking confidently, even though her heart was pounding and her head was hurting and something inside her was broken and she felt like screaming and crying and—

She took a deep breath.

"Hannah," the secretary spoke softly. Annabeth had called before she left the apartment so the principal had already pulled her out of class. "Your sister is here."

Okay, so that wasn't necessarily true, but it might as well have been. Hannah was actually Percy's little sister, but Annabeth had basically grown up with his family. She had been with him for as long as she could remember, and she could even remember sitting at the hospital with Percy when Hannah was born. Of course, Hannah knew that Annabeth wasn't really her sister, but it was just easier to tell people that. It always amazed people that Annabeth had managed to stay with a guy that she had been best friends with since preschool. And "brother's permanent girlfriend" didn't have the same ring to it, she guessed.

"Hi, Annabeth!" Hannah said, hoping up from the chair.

Annabeth pasted a smile on her face and reached down for her hand. Hannah was only nine years old, but she was just as brave as Percy was.

Her chest tightened again. She fought it away.

"Where are we going?" Hannah asked as they made their way down the hall and back out to the car.

Annabeth squeezed her hand gently, "Back to my house. Percy is waiting on us there."

"Oh, okay," Hannah said before launching into a story about something that had happened in class earlier. Annabeth made sure to listen and speak at the right times, but her heart wouldn't stop hurting and her head was pounding.

Ω

Hannah had cried herself to sleep. Annabeth had put her on the couch and covered her with a blanket before moving back to the kitchen.

She slipped her arms around Percy's middle and held on tight. He was leaning against the counter, clutching it tightly in his hands until his knuckles were white. He was still drawing in shaky breaths, but they were getting more even as she held him. She laid her head on his back and closed her eyes, blinking her own tears away.

"I keep forgetting that they were like your parents too," Percy said suddenly. His voice was rough, and it vibrated low in his chest.

Her throat was tight, "Yeah, but that's okay."

"No, it's not, Annabeth. None of this is okay."

She squeezed him harder for a second before she slipped around him, wedging herself between his body and the counter. She pulled his head up so he had to look at her. His green eyes were rimmed with red, and she didn't like the sad look there.

"Annabeth," he whispered gravelly. "What are we going to do?"

His eyes flickered past her and towards the living room, and she knew what he was talking about immediately.

She buried her hand in his hair and pushed closer to him. "Well, I'm going to clean out my study tonight, and I'm also going to go get some of Hannah's stuff while you cook dinner. Later this week we'll move all of her things over here."

"Annabeth—"

"Percy," she stopped him. "We're not letting her grow up somewhere else. I know that we're young, and I know that it will be hard, but we'll do it. I'm almost finished with school, and you're already working. We're going to be fine."

He was staring at her, and instead of saying anything, he nodded.

Annabeth pulled him closer, holding him.

His voice was thick when he said, "I love you."

"I love you, too."

Ω

Two days ago, Sally and Paul Blofis had been on their way home from dropping Hannah off at school. They normally just had Sally take her, but Paul had been off from work, and he had tagged along. They had been driving down the freeway when they had hit a patch of ice and slid down a ravine.

Neither of them made it. The police told them that it was quick.

It was weird. Annabeth had just talked to Sally on the phone that morning. And then barely three hours later she was getting a call from a police station, telling her that they needed to see her and Percy right away.

Their funerals had been today. But Sally and Paul had their attorney ready with everything planned out already. Annabeth had never been more grateful for anything in her entire life. It was like Sally had known what they would have trouble with, and she had taken care of it for them. Just like always.

Well.

Now, they were at home. They were all exhausted, and instead of cooking anything, they had ordered pizza from Hannah's favorite place. But really, none of them were hungry. Annabeth had stashed an almost full box of pizza in the fridge for later.

Percy was in the shower right now, and Annabeth and Hannah were curled up on the couch. Hannah was in Annabeth's lap, and she was already asleep, snoring and drooling against her just like Percy did every night.

When Annabeth gently shifted to turn the television off, Hannah woke up.

"Annabeth?" She said.

"Yeah, Hannah?" She asked.

"I want Mommy."

Annabeth's eyes watered again, but she bit her lip hard to get the tears away. She nodded, "I know. I do too."

"Why did she leave us?" Hannah cried, gripping Annabeth's hands harder.

"She didn't," she said desperately. Her own voice was watery, and Annabeth fought hard to keep it under control. "She didn't want to leave us, but she had too. Percy and I are here. I'm right here."

Hannah kept crying until she started sniffling again.

"Do you want to sleep in my bed with me and Percy?" Annabeth asked.

Hannah nodded.

Annabeth gathered Hannah into her arms and stood up carefully, turning off the lights and walking down the hall to her bedroom. The lights were off in the room, but Annabeth could see the bathroom light peeking out from under the door.

She tucked Hannah into her bed and crawled in behind her, hugging her tightly and trying to get the both of them to stop shaking.

A few minutes later, Annabeth heard the bathroom door open. Percy shuffled around the room for a second before he crawled into their bed behind her. He slipped his arm over Annabeth and Hannah both, pulling them close.

Hannah drifted off to sleep in Annabeth's arms, and Percy was snoring into the crook of her neck before too long.

Ω

Annabeth was the only one that had been to Sally and Paul's apartment since the accident. She knew that Percy and Hannah were still dangerously close to crying every time that they thought about it, so she had been trying to keep them from that for as long as she could.

The first time that she walked through the door and smelled the faint cookies, she collapsed onto the floor, holding her head in her hands and clutching her throat while she cried.

It was a bit better the second time. She actually made it through the whole apartment before her eyes watered, and even then she managed to grab some of Hannah's clothes and a few toys and get back outside in the cold air before the tears dripped down her face.

This time was a little bit worse.

She was packing up some of their stuff. She had already finished gathering all of Hannah's, and a few of their friends had helped her move everything into their apartment while Percy and Hannah chilled somewhere else today. She had talked to Percy about it, and even though he wanted to help, they had both decided that it wasn't a good idea yet. He needed to spend time with Hannah right now. She could handle most of this stuff, and if she came across something important, she could call him.

So far, she had been able to handle most of the legal stuff too. Percy had to sign some papers over the past few days, but Annabeth had been able to meet with the lawyer and everything else. Percy and Hannah were dividing everything down the middle, so all of the money from their savings and the insurance had been put into two accounts. One was Percy's, and the other was a fund for Hannah, which she would get when she turned eighteen. It was probably enough to pay for her college, and Annabeth planned to add more to it as the years went on.

Okay, she wasn't going to lie. This whole thing was freaking her out. She knew that she and Percy were both too young to be like parents (god, they were barely twenty-five), but Annabeth didn't want Hannah to have to go live with some distant relative on Paul's side of the family. And what would Hannah think of that? Annabeth grew up in a broken home, and the last thing that she wanted was for Hannah to have to feel the same way. No. Hannah was going to be loved and have a home with them. She didn't care what it took. She would make it happen.

Annabeth knew that Percy was relieved that she thought that. She knew that he was afraid of where Hannah would have to go if she didn't stay with them.

With some of the money that Sally and Paul had left them, Annabeth had rented a storage locker in the city. She figured that she could box up everything now, and then when Hannah was older and ready to move out, they could go back through it and decide what to keep in case she wanted any of it.

After she finished getting Hannah's room back at their apartment, she had headed back to Sally and Paul's. She had already packed up their bedroom and the living room, and she had just started in Sally's office when her phone rang.

"Hello?" She answered. Her voice wobbled unsteadily. She hadn't realized that she had been crying.

There was a slight pause before Percy said, "Annabeth?"

"I'm here," she said, forcing her voice to steady. "What's up?"

"Are you crying?"

She gripped the edge of the desk with her other hand. Her eyes were watering again, but she said, "No. I'm fine. Is something wrong? Do you need me?"

"No, but it's already five-thirty," he said. "You said you were going to be back by five, and I was getting worried."

"Oh," she breathed into the phone, glancing down at her watch. She had been so wrapped up in her own thoughts she had totally ignored the time. "I'm so sorry, Percy. I'm on my way."

"Okay, but if you're in the middle of something, it's fine. I just wanted to make sure that you were okay," he said.

She sighed, "Yeah, I'm okay. Just a little tired."

"Me too," Percy breathed.

"Is Hannah okay?" She asked.

"I think so. We went to the park and took a walk, and then we picked up a pizza and a new movie," he said. "We were going to wait on you before we ate or started it."

Annabeth was already walking out of Sally's office and flipping off the lights through the apartment. She had been here long enough, and she hadn't realized how sad she had gotten.

"I'm on my way now, so I should be there in twenty minutes," she said. "You guys can go ahead and eat if you want."

"It's okay. We'll wait on you."

"Okay, be there soon," she said, grabbing her bag off of the floor.

"Be careful. I love you."

Her smile was small, "I love you too."

Just as Annabeth was walking out of the door, she hesitated when she glanced at the bookshelf. Sally kept pictures plastered all over the apartment, and she normally bought picture frames and shoved them onto any shelf that she could find.

The pictures that she was staring at now were both of Hannah and Sally and Paul. The first one was Hannah's first day of preschool, and Hannah and Sally were sitting on a concrete bench underneath a small tree. They were both smiling from ear to ear, and Sally had her head leaned over onto the top of Hannah's. The second one had been taken not too long ago. It was a picture of Sally, Paul, and Hannah sitting in the sand when they had gone on vacation to Montauk a few months ago. Annabeth remembered taking that picture.

On impulse, she grabbed both of the frames and shoved them down into her bag. Then she closed the door, leaving some of the memories behind and moving on to Percy and Hannah.

Ω

Annabeth's tears were gone by the time she unlocked the door with her keys and pushed inside.

When she opened the door, she was greeted with two happy yells, and then there were two sets of arms around her legs, pulling her down onto the floor. She squealed when she hit a stack of pillows, and she could hear them laughing.

Hannah and Percy both leaned over her. They were grinning from ear to ear, and their eyes were sparkling happily. Hannah had a crown sitting on top of her head, and Percy was wearing a pink feather boa around his neck. They must have found all of her stuff in her new room. Annabeth wondered if she liked it.

"We built a pillow fort, Annabeth!" Hannah said excitedly.

Percy nodded along, still smiling, "Yeah, and you're just in time to eat with us because we're starving."

She smiled up at them, "Okay, I'm starving too, so whenever you hooligans decide to get off of me, we can eat."

"Hannah!" Percy shouted. "She called us hooligans!"

"She was talking about you!" Hannah exclaimed.

Percy pretended to be offended. He got up from his place and chased Hannah around the room. The two of them dashed back to Hannah's new room, and Annabeth laughed lightly as she climbed to her feet.

She set her bag down on a chair, and she hesitated when she looked down into it to see the two pictures. Her heart grew heavier instantly.

Annabeth didn't want to show them to Hannah right now. She looked like she and Percy were having fun for the first time in almost a week. She didn't want to ruin that with something that could be dealt with later.

"Annabeth?"

She jumped and zipped up her bag quickly, setting it back down into the chair. She turned around and raised her eyebrows at Percy, who was standing in the hallway, looking at her. His smile was gone, but the playful look was still in his eyes.

"Ready to eat?" She asked, crossing the room and heading to the kitchen.

Percy nodded again, and he was almost knocked over when Hannah barreled past him and into the kitchen with Annabeth.

Hannah sat on the counter and told Annabeth all about their day while they ate slightly cold pizza. Percy kept pressing his hand against her hip, and he pecked her on the cheek a few times when Hannah wasn't paying attention. She hoped that they couldn't feel the empty space that she felt in her heart. Maybe she could keep it all to herself so they wouldn't feel it ever again.

She didn't know if she would be able to handle that though.

Ω

Hannah fell asleep on the couch in between Percy and Annabeth. They had been watching a new movie that Hannah had picked out today, and Annabeth didn't think that she was that far behind Hannah. She was exhausted.

When the movie was over, Percy stood up and picked Hannah up carefully. He smiled lightly at Annabeth when she climbed to her feet, and he headed down the hallway.

She was picking up and folding all of the blankets that they had used in their pillow fort when he came back into the room. She looked up and smiled when he walked over to her and—

Then his lips were on hers, and he was gripping her hips in his hands and pulling her close and it was too much. She hadn't been with Percy like this in what felt like forever. They were in the middle of all of this stuff, and she couldn't remember the last time that she had really kissed him.

Annabeth sighed into his mouth and relaxed against his body. She snaked her arms around his neck, and Percy was holding her tightly against him.

He pulled back and pressed his forehead to hers. They were panting in each other's faces, but she didn't care. She had missed being this close to him.

"I'm going to take a shower," he said. His voice was low and rough, and Annabeth wanted to shiver at the sound of it. "Want to join me?"

She hummed, "Mmm. I'll meet you in bed instead. I'm going to clean up this stuff first."

"You're missing out," he grumbled, tugging her hips against his.

She laughed lightly and leaned up for another kiss, "You can wait fifteen minutes, you idiot. Now go take a shower."

Percy shook his head amusedly, pressing an open-mouthed kiss to the shell of her ear. He trailed his hand up her arm before he turned and sauntered down the hall.

Annabeth hurriedly folded the rest of the sheets that they had used and stashed them back in the hallway closet. When she was sure that she heard the shower in their bathroom running, she walked back into the living room and over to her bag.

She slowly pulled the picture frames out of her bag, studying them for a few seconds until she set off down the hall, quietly opening Hannah's door and slipping inside the room.

She was curled up in the blankets, snoozing peacefully. Annabeth smiled to herself and set the two picture frames up on Hannah's nightstand. She bent over to pull the comforter up around Hannah's shoulders, but before she could leave, Hannah turned over and looked up at her.

"Annabeth?" Hannah asked.

"Yes, Hannah?" She said softly.

"I've been having dreams about Mommy and Daddy."

Annabeth sat down on the edge of Hannah's bed. "Are they bad dreams?"

"Not really. They kind of make me sad because I wake up and they aren't here," Hannah said. Her voice was surprisingly strong.

"I'm sorry," Annabeth said.

"But I kind of like the dreams. Is that bad?"

Annabeth smiled softly at her and reached out to brush her brown hair behind her ear. She said, "Of course not, Hannah."

"Okay," she paused for a second before she said. "I really like staying here with you and Percy."

"You do?" Annabeth asked.

"Yeah."

"Good," she said. She leaned over and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I like you staying here with me and Percy, too. Try to get some sleep, Hannah."

Hannah laid back down, and Annabeth stood up and shuffled toward the door.

"Annabeth?" Hannah said again.

"Yes?"

"I love you."

Annabeth's heart melted. Her voice was thick when she said, "I love you too. Get some sleep. I'm right down the hall if you need me."

Hannah curled back up in her bed, and Annabeth closed the door softly behind her.

Annabeth swallowed the rest of her tears as she made her way to her bedroom and changed into a tank top and shorts. She crawled under the covers and curled up on her side, listening as Percy cut off the shower and made his way into the room a few minutes later. She could hear him shuffling around quietly, muttering a curse when he bumped his toe against the dresser. She smiled into her pillow, but she didn't say anything.

Percy crawled under the sheets beside her a few seconds later. He pressed his nose into her neck, stamping his lips against her skin. She rolled over so she was on her back, and Percy crawled over her so he was hovering above her and looking down at her.

"Hi," he said roughly, leaning down to kiss her neck.

She sighed, "Percy."

She let him kiss her neck for a few minutes. His hands were tracing all over her body, and he kept muttering her name against her skin.

Normally, she could relax when she was with Percy, but tonight, her mind was still racing. And it was probably because she hadn't gotten to really talk to him in a while. They had both been so busy lately, and Hannah had been sleeping in their bed with them, so they hadn't gotten to talk about anything for a while.

Her hands were tracing up his back, and she used one of them to find his and grasp his fingers. Her voice was quiet when she whispered, "Percy?"

He pulled up and placed a kiss on her nose. His green eyes were round, and his pupils were blown wide. He said, "Annabeth."

"I missed you."

"I missed you too," he said against her lips, kissing her softly.

She ran one of her hands up his chest and pushed him back slightly until she could see his face. His eyebrows were furrowed, and he looked really confused. He hadn't put a shirt on after getting out of the shower, and when Annabeth traced her foot up his leg, making him shudder, she barely grazed the shorts he had thrown on.

"I feel like I haven't gotten to talk to you," she explained.

His face softened, and the confusion melted away. He leaned down and pressed another kiss to her lips, but he pulled back enough so he could whisper, "I know."

When he kept pressing kisses to her jaw, she laughed lightly and pushed against his chest, "Percy."

He sighed in exasperation and pulled all the way up so his face was hovering above hers. He looked kind of amused, but his voice was slightly whiny when he said, "You talk, and I'll listen."

She rolled her eyes. "Percy."

He sighed again and rolled off of her and back onto the bed. He put his arm behind his head and kept his other hand in hers, pressing them against his heart. He said, "So what do you want to talk about?"

"Hannah said that she loved me."

Percy was smiling, "Of course she did. Why are we talking about it?"

"I mean, I don't think that I've ever heard her say it like that," she said.

"What do you mean?" Percy asked. "She says it all of the time. Even before Mom and Paul—"

She cut him off before he had to say it. "I know, but I just felt like she really meant it this time. She said that she liked staying here with us."

Percy's jaw was tight when she looked back over at him, but he nodded. "Yeah. That's good."

"Are you okay?" She asked after a second of silence.

"No," he admitted. "Are you?"

She shook her head, "No."

He sighed and tugged her closer to him with his grip on her hands. Annabeth put her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes, trying to stop the tears before they started. He smelled good, and his skin was warm. She pressed her lips against his collarbone.

Percy sighed again and rolled back over on top of her. He was already kissing her, and really, Annabeth just wanted to forget. She wanted to get lost in Percy and not have to think about anything again until in the morning.

He pulled back suddenly, and Annabeth whimpered at the loss of contact. He said, "Annabeth?"

"Yeah?" She whispered.

"Can we not talk about anything else until in the morning?" He asked.

She nodded and pulled him back down to her lips.
